また天使はわたしに、これらのしるしとこれらの不思議がこの地の全面に現れることを、多くの人が信じられるように、また人の子らの中に不信仰の起こることがないように、多くの人はこれらのことよりも大いなることを見るであろうと言った。またこれは、信じる者が皆救われ、信じない者に義の裁きが下るようにするためでもある。そして、もし彼らが罪に定められるとすれば、自分の罪の宣告を自分自身に招くのである。ヒラマン１４：２８−２９
And the angel said unto me that many shall see greater things than these, to the intent that they might believe that these signs and these wonders should come to pass upon all the face of the land, to the intent that there should be no cause for unbelief among the children of men. And this to the intent that whosoever will believe might be saved, and that whosoever will not believe, a righteous judgement might come upon them; and also if they are condemned they bring upon themselves their own condemnation. Helaman 14:28-29
This scripture was given by Samuel, the Lamanite, when he was sent to warn the Nephites in the city of Zarahemla to repent of their wickedness. In his message, he told the Nephites that there would be a day and a night and a day with no darkness. He said that would be the sign to them that the Savior had been born. He also told them about great destructions and the three days of darkness when the Savior was crucified.
この聖句はレーマン人サムエルがゼラヘムラの街にいるニーファイ人に彼らの罪悪を悔い改めるよう警告を与えるために行った時残したものです。そのメッセージで彼はニーファイ人に二昼一夜がまるで一日のようである日が来ることを伝えました。それは救い主の生誕のしるしであり、また彼らに大きな破壊と救い主が十字架にかけられる時、3日間の闇がある事も伝えました。
He explained to the Nephites why these signs would be given. He said that the angel told him that the signs were given “to the intent that there should be no cause for unbelief”.
彼はニーファイ人に何故それらのしるしが与えられたのか説明しました。「人の子らの中に不信仰の起こることがないように」そのしるしが与えられたと天使が教えました。
When the day and a night and a day with no darkness happened, everyone knew about it. Everyone was able to see it. Everyone knew that it was the sign of Christ’s birth.
二昼一夜がまるで一日のようであって夜がなかった時、誰もがそのことを理解しました。皆が見ました。誰もがそれがキリストの誕生のしるしだと分かりました。
It is hard for us to believe that, just a few years later, the people began to doubt that the sign had really happened. We are told that “from this time forth there began to be lyings sent forth among the people by Satan” (3 Nephi 1:22).
数年後に人々はそのしるしが実際に起きたことを疑い始めたのは信じがたいことです。第3ニーファイ1章２２節には「このとき以後、サタンは民の心をかたくなにし、民の中に偽りを広め始めた」と記されています。
How could the people forget something like a day and a night and a day with no darkness? How could they begin to doubt that it had ever happened? How could they start to disbelieve after so many signs?
どうして二昼一夜がまるで一日のようであって夜がない事実を忘れることが出来るでしょうか？それが起きたことをどうして疑いを持ち始めれるでしょうか？多くのしるしがあった後、疑るようになれるのでしょう？
Before we criticize those Nephites, we need to look at our own situation.
それらのニーファイ人を批判する前に、私たち自身を見つめてみましょう。
We have also been given many signs and wonders, to the intent that we might believe.
私たちにも信じれるよう多くのしるしや不思議が与えられています。
We have been given the Bible, which records the events of the birth and ministry of the Savior. We have been given The Book of Mormon, which testifies of Jesus Christ. We have been given the testimonies of Jesus Christ by our modern-day prophets and apostles.
私たちにはイエス・キリストを証しする聖書が与えられています。現代の預言者や使徒からもイエス・キリストの証が与えられています。
For us, as well as for the ancient Nephites, “there should be no cause for unbelief among the children of men”.
古代のニーファイ人同様、私たちも「人の子らの中に不信仰の起こることがないように」しなければなりません。
Samuel also explained that signs are given so that we may exercise our agency. Those who choose to believe will be saved. Those who choose to not believe will be condemned.
サムエルはまた私たちが自由意思を使うようしるしが与えられると説明しています。信じることを選んだものは救われました。信じないことを選んだものは責めを受けました。
We are free to make our own choice. No one will ever be forced to accept the gospel. That means that we will receive a reward or a punishment based on our own choices. We are all free to choose.
私たちは自由に選ぶことが出来ます。誰一人福音を受け入れるよう強制させることはありません。それは自分の選択によって報いや罰という結果を受けるということです。私たちは何を選ぶのも自由なのです。
Let’s all choose to follow the Savior. Let’s all choose to believe the signs that have been given. Let’s all choose to be saved.
救い主に従うことを選びましょう。与えられているしるしを信じるという選択をしましょう。救われるという選択をしましょう。
