それゆえ、同胞よ、主に助言しようとしないで、主の手から助言を受けるようにしなさい。見よ、あなたがたは、主が、造られたすべてのものに知恵と公正と深い憐れみをもって助言を与えられることを知っているからである。ヤコブ書４：１０

Wherefore, brethren, seek not to counsel the Lord, but to take counsel from his hand.  For behold, ye yourselves know that he counseleth in wisdom, and in justice, and in great mercy, over all his works.  Jacob 4:10

私たちがこの世で学ばなければならない最も難しい教訓の一つは、御霊の助言と促しに従うことです。

One of the most difficult lessons we need to learn in this life is to follow the counsel and promptings of the Spirit.  

それは簡単なことのように思えます。私たちは、主が常に私たちが正しい決断を下せるように導いてくださることを知っています。聖霊の促しが正しいことを行うよう導いてくださることを知っています。

That seems like it would be a simple thing.  We know that the Lord will always lead us to make correct decisions.  We know that the promptings of the Holy Ghost will lead us to do the right things.

では、なぜ私たちは促しに従うことがこれほど難しいのでしょうか?

So why is it so hard for us to follow what we are prompted to do?

最も一般的な理由は、求められていることと、自分がしたいことが異なるということでしょう。主に導きを求めるとき、私たちは自分が何をしたいのかをすでに決めていることがあります。私たちは主が自分が正しい選択をしたと言ってくださることを期待しています。

Probably the most common reason is that we want to do something different than what we are being prompted to do.  Sometimes, when we ask the Lord for guidance, we have already decided what we want to do.  We expect the Lord to tell us that we have made the right choice.  

しかし、予想とはまったく違う答えが返ってきます。私たちは正しい決断をしたはずだと頑固に考えます。なぜ主は私たちに何か他のことをするよう言われるのだろうか？私はこの促しを正しく理解できなかったのではないか、また、主は私たちの願いを正しく理解してくださらなかったのだろう、等と考えます。

But then we get an answer that is completely different than what we expected.  We were sure that we had made the correct decision.  Why is the Lord telling us to do something else?  We think, maybe I didn’t understand the prompting correctly.  Maybe the Lord did not understand our request correctly.  

時には、受けた促しが、私たちが期待していたものと異なるだけでなく、受け入れがたいものである場合もあります。その促しが、私たちが躊躇していることや恐れていることをするように指示しているのかもしれません。その促しが、私たちの快適な状況から完全に外れた何かをするように指示しているのかもしれません。

Sometimes the prompting we receive is not only different than what we expected, it may be something that is uncomfortable for us to accept.  Maybe the prompting tells us to do something that we are hesitant or afraid to do.  Maybe the prompting tells us to do something that is completely outside of our comfort zone.

そんな時、私たちはどうすればよいでしょう？

What do we do when that happens?

選択肢は実際にはふたつだけです。聖霊の促しに従うか、自分のやりたいことを行うかのふたつです。

There are really only two choices.  We can follow the promptings from the Holy Ghost, or we can do what we want to do.  

私たちの中には、聖霊が常に正しいことを学ぶまで、自分のやりたいことを選択し、その後、間違った決定の結果に何度も苦しむ必要がある人もいます。聖霊の促しに従って行動することをただ学ぶだけで、多くの失望、試練、後悔から身を守ることができます。

For some of us, it takes choosing to do what we want to do and then suffering the consequences of a bad decision many times before we learn that the Holy Ghost is always right.  We can save ourselves from a lot of disappointments, trials, and regrets if we simply learn to do what the Holy Ghost prompts us to do.

それは難しいこと、恐ろしいこと、まったく予期せぬことかもしれませんが、聖霊の指示に従うとき、私たちは常に安全で守られます。

It may be a hard thing, it may be a scary thing, it may be a completely unexpected thing, but when we follow what the Holy Ghost tells us to do, we will always be safe and protected.  

私たちはニーファイの模範に倣うことができます。ニーファイは聖霊から指示を与えられ、期待していたものとはまったく異なる行動を取りました。

We can follow the example of Nephi, who was given instructions by the Holy Ghost that caused him to take actions very different than what he expected to do.

私たちが何かをするように促される理由を理解する必要はありませんし、そうするのは適切でもありません。それは単に信仰の問題であり、祝福されると信じ主が望んでおられることに喜んで従うかということなのです。

It is not necessary, or even appropriate, for us to understand why we are being prompted to do something.  It is simply a matter of faith, of believing that we will be blessed, of being willing to submit our will to what the Lord wants us to do.

新しい週が始まります。時間を取って自分自身の意思決定のプロセスを吟味し、「主の助言を求めているか」どうかを確認してみましょう。聖霊が私たちに何かをするように促した経験と、その促しに従ったかどうかを考えてみましょう。人生を歩む中で常に聖霊の導きに従い、より良く行動することを決意しましょう。聖霊は常に私たちを安全な道に導いてくださること、そして主は私たちにとって最善のことを私たちよりもよくご存じであることを覚えておきましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s take time to examine our own decision-making process and see if we are “seeking to counsel the Lord”.  Let’s think about times that the Holy Ghost has prompted us to do something and whether or not we followed those promptings.  Let’s resolve to do better to always follow the guidance of the Holy Ghost as we go through life.  Let’s remember that the Holy Ghost will always lead us in paths of safety and that the Lord knows better than we do what is best for us.
