The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. 2 Nephi 19:2
ニーファイ第二書の中で、ニーファイは旧約聖書のイザヤ書からいくつかの章を引用しています。これらの章は「旧約聖書」の文法スタイルと語彙で書かれているため、理解しにくいかもしれません。
In the middle of 2nd Nephi, Nephi includes several chapters from the Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament. These chapters can be difficult to get through, since they are written in the “Old Testament” style of grammar and vocabulary.
ニーファイでさえ、イザヤ書の内容が理解しにくいことを認めています。ニーファイ第二書 25：1 で「イザヤは私の民の多くの者にとって理解しにくいものである」と書いています。今日の私たちにとって、それらは決して簡単に理解できるものではありません。
Even Nephi admits that the writings of Isaiah are not easy to understand. In 2 Nephi 25:1, Nephi writes, “Isaiah spake many things which were hard for many of my people to understand”. They are not any easier for us to understand today.
では、なぜニーファイはイザヤ書の文書をこれほど多く取り入れたのでしょうか。旧約聖書にはすでに同じ章がすべてあります。
So why did Nephi include so much of the writings of Isaiah? We already have all those same chapters in our Old Testament.
おそらく答えは、ニーファイが私たちに教えているように、イザヤ書の記述が救い主、その使命、そして贖罪について非常に明確に教えているからでしょう。興味深いのは、死海文書の中で最も頻繁に発見されたのがイザヤ書だったことです。
Perhaps the answer is, as Nephi teaches us, that the writings of Isaiah preach so clearly about the Savior, his mission, and his atonement. It is interesting that among the Dead Sea Scrolls, the most frequently found book was the Book of Isaiah.
今日の聖句でイザヤは救い主の来臨とその使命について預言しています。イザヤは象徴的な言葉で、暗闇の中にいる人々は大きな光を見るだろうと教えています。聖書の中で、預言者は義人と悪人について言及するときに、光と闇の象徴をよく使います。
In today’s verse, Isaiah prophesies about the coming of the Savior and about his mission. Speaking in symbolic terms, Isaiah teaches us that those who are in darkness will see a great light. In the scriptures, prophets often use the symbols of light and darkness when referring to the righteous and the wicked.
この節の言葉にはいくつかの異なる解釈が存在します。
There may be several different meanings of the words in this verse.
考えられる解釈の一つは、救い主のこの世での教導の業です。救い主は確かにエルサレムのユダヤ人が見た「大きな光」でした。彼らは霊的な暗闇の中にいて、福音の真の教義を失っていました。
One possible interpretation may refer to the Savior’s mortal ministry. The Savior was certainly the “great light” that the Jews in Jerusalem saw. They were in spiritual darkness and had lost the true doctrines of the gospel.
救い主の地上での教導の業は、地理的にはエルサレムとその近隣地域に限られていますが、その霊的に影響をもたらした範囲は無限です。二千年以上経った今日でも、義人たちはその教導の業を「大きな光」の時として捉えています。
The Savior’s earthly ministry, though limited geographically to Jerusalem and nearby areas, is unlimited in its spiritual reach. Today, more than 2,000 years later, the righteous still look to the events of that ministry as a time of “great light”.
もう一つの解釈は、霊界における救い主の使命に関連しています。肉体が墓にあった間、救い主は霊界に行き、そこで救いの業を組織されました。霊界にいる人たちは「死の陰の地」にいると表現する事も出来ます。
Another possible meaning may have reference to the Savior’s mission in the Spirit World. During the time his physical body was in the tomb, the Savior went to the Spirit World and organized the work of salvation there. Those in the Spirit World could be described as being in the “land of the shadow of death”.
救い主がそこで死者の霊たちの間で業を組織するのに費やされた時間は、確かにそれらの霊たちに「大きな光」を当てたと言えるでしょう。これは、救い主を知らずに亡くなった人々にとって、偉大な救いの業の始まりでした。
The time the Savior spent organizing the work there among the spirits of the dead could certainly be described as having a “great light” shined on those spirits. This was the beginning of the great work of salvation for those who had died without a knowledge of the Savior.

As we read these Isaiah chapters, look for references to the Savior. See how many you can find.
