Therefore, cheer up your hearts, and remember that ye are free to act for yourselves — to choose the way of everlasting death or the way of eternal life. 2 Nephi 10:23
先週の聖句の中で、リーハイはすべての物事には反対のものがなければならないと教えました。今週の聖句も同じテーマでお話しします。
In last week’s Scripture Thought, Lehi taught us that there must be opposition in all things. This week’s scripture continues on with that same theme.
この聖句で預言者ニーファイは、福音の最も基本的な教義である自由意思という重要な原則について教えています。自由意志を行使するためには、選択肢が必要です。正しい選択もあれば、悪い選択もあります。
In this scripture, the prophet Nephi teaches us about the important principle of free agency, the most basic doctrine of the gospel. In order to exercise our free agency, we must have choices. There have to be good choices and there have to be bad choices.
サタンの計画は、私たちに自由意志を与えないことに基づいていました。サタンは、すべての悪い選択を排除することによって、私たちが罪を犯さないようにしようとしました。それは多くの天父の霊の子供たちにとって良い案に思え、その 3分の1 がその計画に従いたいと考えました。
Satan’s plan was based on our not having any free agency. Satan would prevent us from sinning by eliminating all the bad choices. That sounded like a good option to many, and one third of Heavenly Father’s spirit children wanted to follow that plan.
サタンの計画は、私たちが自分で選択する必要がないので、安全であるかのように思えました。しかし、選択肢がないことは自由意志の基本原則に反します。選択する機会がなければ、天の御父の計画に従いたいという意志を天の御父に示すことはできません。
Satan’s plan sounded safe, since we would not have to make any choices ourselves. But not having any choices violates the basic principle of free agency. If we never have the opportunity to make a choice, we cannot show Heavenly Father that we want to follow his plan.
自分で選択をすることは恐ろしいことかもしれません。サタンは常にそこにいて、私たちを騙し、悪い選択をさせようとしています。自由意志を行使し、正しい選択をすることによって、私たちはより強い信仰を育むことができます。
Making our own choices can be scary. Satan is always there, trying to trick us, trying to make us chose the bad choice. It is by exercising our free agency and making good choices that we can develop stronger faith.
あなたは「私は正しい選択をしています」「なぜ私に悪いことが起こるのでしょう？ なぜ私はまだ試練や困難にあうのですか？」と言うかもしれません。
“But, I am making good choices,” you say. “Why do bad things happen to me? Why do I still have trials and difficulties?”
自由意志の原則はそういうものではありません。それは（戒めを守ることによって）象徴的に料金を支払い、すぐに人生からすべての苦難を取り除くゴールデンチケットを受け取るというような「取引」ではないのです。
That is not how the principle of free agency works. It is not a “transaction”, where we symbolically pay our fee (by keeping the commandments) and immediately receive a golden ticket that eliminates all hardships from our life.
不思議に思う人もいるかもしれませんが、困難や試練は実は良いことなのです。
While it seems strange to some, hardships and trials are actually good things.
そうした苦難や試練を乗り越えることによってのみ、私たちは信仰を育むことができます。そうした苦難や試練を乗り越えることによってのみ、私たちは救い主イエス・キリストにさらに似た者になれるのです。そうした苦難や試練を乗り越えることによってのみ、私たちは天の御父が戒めを守る人々に約束された永遠の祝福を受けるにふさわしい者となることができるのです。
It is only through passing through those hardships and trials that we can develop our faith. It is only through passing through those hardships and trials that we can become more like our Savior Jesus Christ. It is only through passing through those hardships and trials that we can become worthy of the eternal blessings Heavenly Father has promised to those who keep his commandments.
この聖句で、ニーファイは私たちに心楽しくあるよう教えています。私たちには自由意志があるので心楽しくいるべきです。私たちには永遠の世でどのような報いを受けるかを選ぶ能力があります。私たちは自分の選択に基づいて報いを受けます。永遠の死を選ぶか、永遠の命の道を選ぶことができます。
In this scripture, Nephi teaches us to be cheerful. We are to be cheerful because we do have free agency. We do have the ability to choose the type of reward we will have in the eternal worlds. We will be rewarded based on our own choices. We can choose everlasting death or the way of eternal life.
新しい週が始まります。ニーファイからのこのメッセージについて深く考えてみましょう。私たちがこの人生で何をするかによって、永遠にどのような人生を送ることになるかが決まるということを覚えておきましょう。私たちは自由に選択できるということを覚えておきましょう。私たちはサタンの策略に屈することを選択することも、イエス・キリストに従ってその戒めを守ることを選択することもできます。常に救い主イエス・キリストに従うことを選びましょう。
As we go through this week, let’s think about this message from Nephi. Let’s remember that the things we do in this life will determine the type of life we will have in the eternities. Let’s remember that we are free to choose. We can choose to give in to Satan’s tricks, or we can choose to follow Jesus Christ and keep his commandments. Let’s always choose to follow our Savior, Jesus Christ.
