And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them.  1 Nephi 16:28

リーハイと家族が未知の荒野への旅を始めるたとき、リーハイは天幕の入り口で奇妙な物を見つけました。彼は「奇妙な細工の丸い球」を見つけました。彼は、これが荒野を導くリアホナ、つまり羅針盤であることを知りました。

As Lehi and his family begin their journey into the unknown wilderness, Lehi finds a strange object at the door of his tent.  He finds a “round ball of curious workmanship”.  He learns that this is a Liahona, or in other words, a compass, that will guide them through the wilderness.  

ニーファイはリアホナがどのように機能したかについて教えています。どうやらリアホナは、今日私たちが使っているコンパスのように単に北を指すものではないようです。むしろ、それは彼らが荒野を旅すべき道を示していました。また、リーハイとその家族がイエス・キリストの福音についてさらに学ぶのに役立つテキストメッセージも表示されました。

Nephi teaches us about how the Liahona worked.  Apparently the Liahona did not just point to the north, like a compass that we used today.  Rather, it pointed the way that they should travel through the wilderness.  It also displayed text messages that helped Lehi and his family learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ. 

ニーファイが『リヤホナ』について気づいた珍しいことのひとつは、『リヤホナ』が、そこに書かれた言葉に対する「信仰と勤勉さと注意深さに従って」機能したということです。

One unusual thing that Nephi noticed about the Liahona is that it worked “according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give” to the words that were written on it.  

ここにある自由意志の原則に注目してください。リアホナは常に、リーハイとその家族が進むべき正しい道を示していました。しかし、その勧告を受け入れることを強制するものではありませんでした。彼らは、リヤホナが教えたことに従うのも、また、拒否したり無視することも自由でした。

Notice the principle of free agency in this.  The Liahona always showed Lehi and his family the correct path to follow.  It did not force them to accept this counsel, though.  They were free to follow what the Liahona taught them, or to reject and ignore what the Liahona taught them.

ニーファイは、自分と家族がリアホナに書かれた勧告に従ったとき、旅が前進したと記録しています。しかし、その指示に従わないことを選択した場合、彼らは困難な道に迷い込み、旅を進めることができなくなりました。

Nephi records that, when he and his family followed the counsel written on the Liahona, they progressed in their journey.  However, when they chose not to follow those instructions, they wandered into difficult paths and did not progress in their journey.

ニーファイのこれらの教えには、私たちへの明確なメッセージがあります。彼らが主の勧告に従ったとき、良いことが起こりました。 その勧告に従わなかった場合，彼らは困難や試練に耐えなければなりませんでした。

There is a clear message for us in these teachings of Nephi.  When they followed the counsel of the Lord, good things happened.  When they did not follow that counsel, they had to endure difficulties and trials.

私たちも自分のリアホナを持つことができたらいいですね。もし私たちそれぞれが自分のリアホナを持っていたら、何をすべきか、どこへ行くべきか、どうすれば幸せになれるかがわかることでしょう。

It would be nice if we could each have our own Liahona.  If we each had our own Liahona, we would know what to do, where to go, how to be happy.  

私たちは皆、リアホナとよく似たものを各自持っています。私たちを教え導く預言者や使徒がいます。ニーファイとその家族のように、私たちもリヤホナが教えてくれることに従うか、自分の意見や考えに従うかを選ぶことができます。

We do each have something very similar to the Liahona.  We have prophets and apostles to teach us and to guide us.  Just like Nephi and his family, we can choose to follow what the Liahona teaches us, or we can choose to follow our own opinions and ideas.

主の預言者は私たちに幸せになる方法を教えてくれています。彼らは私たちがどの道を歩むべきかを教えてくれています。彼らは何が正しいのかを私たちに教えてくれています。

The prophets of the Lord have told us how to be happy.  They have told us which path we should follow.  They have told us what is right.

あなたは彼らの教えや勧告に従いますか？

Do we follow their teachings and counsel?

私たちは毎日祈りを捧げていますか？私たちは毎日聖文を研究していますか？私たちは毎週日曜日すべての集会に出席していますか？私たちは自分の務めを全力で果たしていますか？状況が許す限り頻繁に神殿に参入していますか？私たちは正直に什分の一を納めていますか？

Do we have prayers each day?  Do we study the scriptures each day?  Do we attend all of our Sunday meetings each week?  Do we serve in our callings to the best of our ability?  Do we attend the temple as often as our circumstances allow?  Do we pay a full and honest tithe?

ニーファイとその家族のように、私たちにも預言者に従うか従わないかを選択する自由意志があります。そして、ニーファイとその家族のように、預言者や使徒の勧告に従うことを選択するなら、私たちは天の御父のもとへ帰る旅を前進させることができるでしょう。もし私たちが彼らの勧告に従わないことを選択した場合、私たちは未知の道でさまよい、試練や困難に遭遇することになります。

Just like Nephi and his family, we have free agency to choose to follow the prophets or to not follow the prophets.  And, just like Nephi and his family, if we choose to follow the counsel of the prophets and apostles, we will progress in our journey back home to Heavenly Father.  If we choose not to follow their counsel, we too will wander in strange paths and have trials and difficulties.  

ニーファイとその家族のように、私たちも主が預言者を通して教えてくださった小さくて単純なことを実行することによって、聖約の道を歩み続けることができます。

Just like Nephi and his family, we too can stay on the covenant path by doing the small and simple things that the Lord teaches us through his prophets.

新しい週が始まります。ニーファイとその家族がどのようにリアホナの勧告に従ったのかを思い起こしてみましょう。主の預言者や使徒たちの勧告について学ぶことがいかに簡単であるか考えてみましょう。私たち自身の『リアホナ』に書かれた文章を時間をかけて研究してみましょう。さらに重要なのは、教えられたことを実行する決意することです。聖約の道をしっかりと歩み続けましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s think about how Nephi and his family followed the counsel of the Liahona.  Let’s think about how easy it is for us to learn about the counsel of the Lord’s prophets and apostles.  Let’s take time to study the writings on our own “Liahona”.  More importantly, let’s resolve to do the things that we are taught.  Let’s stay firmly on the covenant path.
