あの奇妙な建物の中に入った人々の数は非常に多かった。彼らはその建物に入ると、わたしやほかにその実を食べていた人々を指さしてあざけり笑った。しかしわたしたちは、彼らのことを気にとめなかった。ニファイ第一書８：３３

And great was the multitude that did enter into that strange building.  And after they did enter into that building they did point the finger of scorn at me and those who were partaking of the fruit also; but we heeded them not.  1 Nephi 8:33

リーハイとその家族が荒野を旅し始めたとき、リーハイは素晴らしい示現を見ました。その中で、リーハイは救い主の愛を表す「命の木」を見せられました。リーハイは命の木の実を味わい、その実は今まで味わった中で「最も甘い」と述べています。

As Lehi and his family begin their travels in the wilderness, Lehi has a great vision.  In the vision, he is shown the Tree of Life, which he explains is a representation of the love of the Savior.  He tasted of the fruit of the Tree of Life and said the fruit was the “most sweet” of anything he had ever tasted.  

リーハイは、その実を食べたとき、彼の御霊は「非常に大きな喜び」で満たされたました。その実を味わい、それが他の人々にも同じ喜びをもたらすことを知っていたリーハイは、自分の家族にもその実を食べさせたいと願いました。

Lehi said that as he ate of the fruit, his soul was filled with “exceedingly great joy”.  Having tasted of the fruit, and knowing that it would bring the same joy to others, he wanted his family members to come and eat of the fruit.  

彼の家族の何人かは彼の助言に従い、来てその実を食べました。しかし、二人の息子は、その実を食べに来ませんでした。おそらく、友人たちに見られるかもしれないと思い、恥ずかしかったのでしょう。あるいは、自分を何でも決めれるタフな人間に見せたかったのかもしれません。

Some of his family followed his counsel and came and ate of the fruit.  Two of his sons, however, decided not to come and eat of the fruit.  Perhaps they were embarrassed, thinking that some of their friends might see them.  Or perhaps they wanted to appear tough and independent.

リーハイは、命の木の側に、大きくて広い建物があることを説明しました。リーハイは、大きくて広い建物は世を表しており、そこには高価な衣服に身を包んだ多くの人々がいました。その人たちは、命の木の実を食べに来た人たちを指差して笑っていました。

Lehi explained that along with the Tree of Life, there was also a great and spacious building.  He said that the great and spacious building was a representation of the world.  It was filled with many people, dressed in expensive clothing.  Those people were laughing and pointing at the people who came and ate of the fruit of the Tree of Life.

果物を食べに来た人の中には、建物にいる人々が自分たちを笑っているのを見た人もいました。彼らはその実を食べてしまったことを恥じて、暗闇の中へ去っていきました。

Some of the people who came and tasted of the fruit saw the people in the building laughing at them.  They were ashamed that they had eaten of the fruit and walked away into darkness.

しかし、救い主の愛を味わいたいと願った義人たちは、命の木の実を食べることができるまで進み続けました。彼らはその木まで安全に導いてくれる鉄の棒をしっかりと握っていました。リーハイは鉄の棒がイエス・キリストの福音であると教えています。

But the righteous people who wanted to taste of the Savior’s love pressed forward until they could eat of the fruit of the Tree of Life.  They held on tightly to the rod of iron that guided them safely to the Tree.  Lehi teaches us that the rod of iron is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  

鉄の棒をしっかり握る、言い換えれば、イエス・キリストの戒めを守るなら、私たちも命の木の実を食べることができるでしょう。私たちはリーハイが感じた喜びを感じることができるでしょう。私たちは自分の生活の中で救い主の愛を感じることができるようになります。

If we hold firmly to the iron rod, or in other words, if we keep the commandments of Jesus Christ, we too will be able to eat of the fruit of the Tree of Life.  We will be able to feel the joy that Lehi felt.  We will be able to feel the love of our Savior in our own lives.

しかし、その大きくて広い建物とそこにいる人々はどうでしょうか？彼らは毎日私たちの周りにいます。彼らは日曜日を楽しむ代わりに、私たちが教会に行くことを笑います。彼らは私たちが飲酒や喫煙をしないことを笑います。彼らは私たちが他人に奉仕することを笑います。彼らは什分の一を納めている私たちを笑います。

But what about that great and spacious building and the people in it?  They are all around us, every day.  They laugh at us for going to church on Sunday instead of having fun.  They laugh at us for not drinking or smoking.  They laugh at us for serving others.  They laugh at us for paying our tithing.

リーハイが見たように、大きくて広々とした建物に入ることを選択する人は常にたくさんいます。私たちが戒めを守っていることをあざけり笑う人は常にたくさんいます。神のものではなくこの世のものを選ぶ人は常にたくさんいます。

As Lehi saw, there will always be lots of people who choose to enter into the great and spacious building.  There will always be lots of people who will laugh at us for keeping the commandments.  There will always be lots of people who choose the things of this world instead of the things of God.

問題は、私たちがそれらにどう対処するかです。私たちはレーマンとレムエルの例に従い、実を食べることを拒むでしょうか？私たちは果物を食べても、友達にそれについて尋ねられると恥ずかしくなって、再び暗闇に戻ってしまいますか？それとも「彼らのことを気にとめない」でしょうか？

The question is, what do we do about that?  Do we follow the example of Laman and Lemuel and refuse to partake of the fruit?  Or do we partake of the fruit, but then get embarrassed when our friends ask us about it and fall back into darkness?  Or do we “heed them not”?

新しい週が始まります。周りを観察し、私たちのことを笑っているかもしれない人がいても、リーハイの模範を思い出してみましょう。戒めを守ることが天の祝福をもたらすことを覚えておきましょう。私たちを騙そうとしているのはサタンであることを忘れないようにしましょう。今週は「彼らのことを気にとめない」ように最善を尽くしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s observe those around us who may be laughing at us and remember the example of Lehi.  Let’s remember that keeping the commandments brings the blessings of Heaven.  Let’s remember that it is Satan trying to trick us.  Let’s do our best this week to “heed them not”.
