そこで、わたしニーファイは父に言った。「わたしは行って、主が命じられたことを行います。主が命じられることには、それを成し遂げられるように主によって道が備えられており、それでなくては、主は何の命令も人の子らに下されないことを承知しているからです。ニーファイ第一書３：７

And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he has commanded them.  1 Nephi 3:7

今からモルモン書の研究を始めますが、まず主の預言者リーハイについて紹介します。リーハイとその家族はゼデキヤ王の時代にエルサレムに住んでいました。イスラエルの民は邪悪になり、エレミヤやリーハイを含む多くの預言者が主によって遣わされ、イスラエルに悔い改めを求めました。

As we begin our study of The Book of Mormon, we are introduced to Lehi, a prophet of the Lord.  Lehi and his family lived in Jerusalem during the time of king Zedekiah.  The Israelites have become wicked and many prophets, including Jeremiah and Lehi, were sent by the Lord to call Israel to repentance.

主からエルサレムを去るように命じられたリーハイとその家族の試練や旅についてこれから学んで行きます。リーハイの二人の息子が主の忠告を拒むなど、家族間の軋轢についても学びます。

We follow the trials and travels of Lehi and his family as they are commanded by the Lord to leave Jerusalem.  We learn about the friction between family members, with the two oldest sons of Lehi rejecting the counsel of the Lord.  

一家が荒野へ旅に出ようとした時、主はリーハイに息子たちをエルサレムに送り返すように命じられました。古代の預言者たちの言葉が書かれた版を手に入れるためです。そうすれば、リーハイとその家族、そして後世の人々が主の聖約について学ぶことができるからです。

As the family is about to leave on their journey into the wilderness, the Lord commands Lehi to send his sons back to Jerusalem.  They need to get the plates that contain the writings of the ancient prophets.  This will allow Lehi, his family, and his posterity to learn about the covenants of the Lord.

しかし、その版を持っていたラバンは権力を持ち、邪悪な男でした。エルサレムを離れることを嫌い、ラバンを恐れていたリーハイの二人の兄たちは、この任務から逃れようとしました。

However, Laban, who had the plates, was a powerful and wicked man.  Lehi’s two oldest boys, who did not like the idea of leaving Jerusalem and who were scared of Laban, tried to get out of this assignment.

末っ子のニーファイは記録を得ることの重要性を理解し、今週の聖句にあるように主が命じられたことは何でも行うと父に告げました。

Nephi, the youngest son, understood the importance of obtaining the records and, in this week’s scripture, told his father that he would do whatever the Lord commanded him to do.

この聖句はモルモン書の中で最もよく知られている聖句の一つで、私たちに大切なことを教えています。どんなに困難な課題であっても、私たちが最善を尽くすなら、主はそれを成し遂げるのを助けてくださるということを教えています。また、私たちの努力が重要であることも教えています。ニーファイは、行って行うと言っています。行って努力するとは言っていないことに注目してください。行って行うと言っているのです。

This is perhaps one of the best know scriptures in The Book of Mormon and teaches us important lessons.  It teaches us that no matter how hard the assignment is, the Lord will help us accomplish it if we do our best.  It also teaches us that effort on our part is critical.  Nephi says he will go and do.  Notice that he does not say he will go and try.  He says he will go and do.  

ニーファイは自分自身が従順であることを証明し、主から与えられた任務を達成せずに父の陣営に戻ることを拒否します。最初の失敗の後、二人の兄たちはあきらめようとしました。彼らにはそれが不可能に思えたのです。

Nephi proves himself obedient and refuses to return to the camp of his father without accomplishing the assignment given to them by the Lord.  After the first failed attempt, the two oldest boys are ready to give up.  It seems impossible to them.

ニーファイは二番目の計画を提案します。家に残してきた金銀をすべて持ち帰り、版と引き換えにラバンに差し出すというものです。しかしこの計画も失敗に終わりました。

Nephi suggests a second plan of action.  They will take all of the gold and silver that they left behind at their home and offer it to Laban in exchange for the plates.  That plan also fails.  

思いつくことはすべて行いました、ニーファイはそれでもあきらめませんでした。彼は、主が版を手に入れられるようにしてくださることを知っていました。そして彼は三度目、「自分がすべきことを前もって知らない」まま再々挑戦しました。主の御霊の導きに頼ることによって、彼は主が彼に割り当てられた任務を成し遂げることができたのです。

Having done all that he could think of, Nephi still does not give up.  He knew that the Lord would make it possible for him to get the plates.  He went back a third time, “not knowing beforehand the things which I should do”.  By relying on the Spirit of the Lord to guide him, he was able to accomplish the task that the Lord has assigned to him.

私たちはニーファイの行動から多くを学べます。私たちは決してあきらめてはならないことや、問題を解決するために最善を尽くす必要があることを学べます。問題を解決する方法を最初から正確に知る必要はないことを学べます。主がいつも導いてくださることを学べます。

We can learn much from the actions of Nephi.  We can learn that we should never give up.  We can learn that we need to do our best to solve the problem.  We can learn that we do not need to know exactly how to solve the problem in the beginning.  We can learn that the Lord will always guide us.  

新しい年を迎えます。ニーファイのようになろうと決意しましょう。自分自身の霊的成長にとって、これまでで最高の年にすることを決意しましょう。人生の試練や悩みを乗り越え、助けてくださる主を信頼することを決意しましょう。モルモン書のメッセージを熱心に学ぶことを決意しましょう。

As we start this new year, let’s resolve to be more like Nephi.  Let’s resolve to make this the best year ever for our own spiritual growth.  Let’s resolve to trust in the Lord to help us through life’s trials and troubles.  Let’s resolve to diligently study the messages of The Book of Mormon.
