His head and his hairs white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.  Revelation 1:14-15

預言者ジョセフ・スミスは、黙示録は聖書の中で最も理解しやすい書物だと述べていますが、殆どの人は、使徒ヨハネが使用した多くのシンボルの意味を理解するのに苦労しています。

Although the Prophet Joseph Smith said that the Book of Revelation was the easiest book of the Bible to understand, most of us struggle to understand the meaning of the many symbols that are used by the Apostle John.

ヨハネはその中で、「王と祭司」について、「第二の死」について、「新しい名」について、「衣」について、「神殿」について語っています。

In his writing, John talks about “kings and priests”, about the “second death”, about a “new name”, about “garments”, and about “temple”.

福音を教えられ、イエス・キリストの教義を理解している教会員たちに向けてヨハネは書いています。それらの教義は今日の私たちには理解できますが、新約聖書を翻訳した人々にとっては非常に分かりにくいものでした。その結果、彼らはしばしば理解できない事柄に変更を加えてしまいました。

John was writing to the members of the Church, those who had been taught the gospel and understood the doctrine of Jesus Christ.  While these doctrines are understood by us today, they were very confusing to those who translated the New Testament.  As a result, they often made changes to things that they did not understand.

As we study the Book of Revelation, it is often helpful to review the corrections made by the Prophet Joseph Smith.  These can be found in the footnotes and in the Joseph Smith Translation section at the very end of the Bible printed by the Church.

聖書には、主イエス・キリストを見た預言者の証言が数多くあります。このような驚異的な霊的体験を言葉で表現するのは非常に難しものです。彼らはしばしば、「雪のように白い」、「炎のつるぎ」、「大水のとどろき」といった言葉を使います。ジョセフ・スミスは「筆紙に尽くしがたい輝きと栄光を持つ」という言葉を使いました。

We have in the scriptures a number of accounts of prophets who have seen the Lord Jesus Christ.  Such a marvelous spiritual experience is very difficult to describe in words.  They often use words like “white as snow”, or “flaming sword”, or “the sound of many waters”.  Joseph Smith used the words “whose brightness and glory defy all description”.

使徒ヨハネが残した記述と、教義と聖約110節に収められている預言者ジョセフ・スミスの証を比較するのは興味深いことです。どちらの証も、救い主の栄光と威厳を表すのに、ほとんど同じ言葉を用いています。

It is interesting to compare the account written by the Apostle John with the testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith contained in Section 110 of the Doctrine & Covenants.  In both accounts, the writers use almost the exact same words to describe the glory and majesty of the Savior.

聖典には、主が古代の預言者、例えばヤレドの兄弟やニーファイに現れたという記述がいくつかあります。しかし、それらの救い主に関する記述は、偉大な贖いの犠牲の後に救い主が現れた人々に関する記述とはまったく異なっています。

We have some accounts in the scriptures of the Lord appearing to ancient prophets, the brother of Jared or Nephi, for example.  However, those pre-mortal descriptions of the Savior are quite different from the descriptions of those to whom the Savior appeared after his great Atoning Sacrifice.

それらの記述から、私たちは救い主の力、栄光、威厳をよりよく理解することができます。救い主は私たちの贖い主であり、王であり、御父との弁護者です。私たちの完全な模範であり、愛に満ちた羊飼いであり、世の救い主です。

From these descriptions, we can better understand the power, the glory, and the majesty of the Savior.  He is our Redeemer, our King, our Advocate with the Father.  He is our perfect example, our loving Shepherd, the Savior of the world.

救い主をよく知るようになると、私たちはどのように行動すべきなのか？ 隣人にどう接するべきか？ 愛と尊敬をどのように示すべきか？と言うことがよりよく理解できるようになります。

As we come to know our Savior better, how should we act?  How should we treat others?  How should we show our love and respect?

救い主をよく知ると、私たちは争いや辛辣な言葉をなくさなければなりません。偏見や傲慢さをなくさなければなりません。救い主の神聖な御名を、常に尊敬と誉れを持って扱わなければなりません。

As we come to know our Savior better, we must eliminate contention and harsh words.  We must eliminate prejudice and arrogance.  We must always treat his sacred name with respect and honor.

新しい週が始まります。預言者や使徒たちが語った救い主についての記述について熟考する時間を持ち、主の御前にふさわしくない自分自身について反省してみましょう。もっと謙遜になり、罪を悔い改めましょう。救い主イエス・キリストの偉大な贖いの犠牲によってのみ、私たちは将来に希望を持つことができるのだということを忘れないようにしましょう。イエス・キリストは私たちの贖い主であり、救い主であり、王です。私たちの行動と発言のすべてにおいて、真の弟子となろうではありませんか。

As we go through this next week, let’s take time to ponder on the descriptions of our Savior as given by prophets and apostles.  Let’s consider our own unworthiness before the Lord.  Let’s strive for greater humility and repent of our sins.  Let’s remember that it is only through the great Atoning Sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ that we have any hope for the future.  Jesus Christ is our Redeemer, our Savior, and our King.  Let’s be true disciples in everything that we do and say.
