「神を愛している」と言いながら兄弟を憎む者は、偽り者である。現に見ている兄弟を愛さない者は、目に見えない神を愛することはできない。ヨハネの第一の手紙 4:20

If a man say, I love God, but hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?  1 John 4:20

近代の新約聖書には、使徒ヨハネの短いメッセージが３つしか見つかりません。救い主の生涯と教導の業についての著書でもしているように、ヨハネは教会員に向けてメッセージを送っています。

We only have three short messages from the Apostle John in our modern New Testament.  Just as he did with his account of the Savior’s life and ministry, John addresses his messages to the members of the Church.

彼は教会員が教えられてきたことを知っており、他の新約聖書の著者よりも多くの教義的なトピックについてたびたび語っています。

He knows what the members of the Church have been taught and often talks about more doctrinal topics than do the other New Testament writers.  

たとえば、ヨハネは「すべての霊を信じることはしないで、それらの霊が神から出たものであるかどうか、ためしなさい」と教えています。預言者ジョセフ・スミスは、教義と聖約の129節で、これと同じ教義を教えています。

For example, John teaches us “believe not every spirit, but try the spirit whether they are of God”.  The Prophet Joseph Smith taught this same doctrine in Section 129 of the Doctrine & Covenants.  

彼は水、血、御霊の象徴について教えています。モーセもこれと同じ教義を『高価な真珠』の中で教えています。

He teaches us about the symbolism of water, blood, and Spirit.  Moses teaches us this same doctrine in the Pearl of Great Price.

この聖句の中で使徒ヨハネは、兄弟を憎むなら神を愛することはできないと教えています。これは、私たちがラッセル・M・ネルソン大管長から受けたメッセージと似ています。ネルソン大管長は、天父のすべての子供たちを愛する人の偉大な模範のひとりです。

In this particular scripture, the Apostle John teaches us that we cannot love God if we have any hatred toward our brother.  This is similar to the messages we have received from President Russell M. Nelson.  President Nelson is one of the great examples of someone who loves all of Heavenly Father’s children.

ヨハネもネルソン大管長も教えているように、私たちは兄弟姉妹の誰に対しても偏見や憎しみを持つことはできません。神の目から見れば、私たちは皆平等なのです。私たち一人ひとりが、天父に愛された娘であり、息子なのです。

As both John and President Nelson teach us, we cannot have any bias or hatred toward any of our brothers and sisters.  We are all equal in the eyes of God.  Each one of us is a beloved daughter or son of Heavenly Father.

天父の子供に悪感情を抱きながら、どうして天父を愛していると言えるでしょうか？

How can we claim to love Heavenly Father if we have bad feelings for any of his children?

過去には、さまざまなグループの人々が他の民族や国籍の人々を見下すことがよくありました。これは、ネルソン大管長が私たちに避けるよう警告し、教えてきた罪です。

In times past, it has been common for various groups of people to look down on those from other ethnic groups or nationalities.  This is a sin that President Nelson has worked very hard to teach us to avoid.

キリストの真の教会のバプテスマを受けた者として、私たちは皆、イスラエルの家の一員です。私たちは皆、同じ神権の儀式を受けています。私たちは皆、同じ聖約を天父と結びます。私たちは皆、天父とその御子イエス・キリストを信じ、愛しています。

As baptized members of Christ’s true church, we are all members of the house of Israel.  We all receive the same ordinances of the priesthood.  We all make the same covenants with Heavenly Father.  We all believe in and love Heavenly Father and his Son, Jesus Christ.

主の教会のメンバーでない人たちはどうでしょう。私たちを敵視したり、迫害したり、福音の教義を公然と攻撃したりする人たちはどうでしょう。私たちは彼らをも愛する必要があるのでしょうか？

What about those who are not members of the Lord’s Church?  What about those who are hostile to us, or persecute us, or openly attack the doctrines of the gospel.  Do we need to love them also?

もちろんそうです。それどころか、まだ福音の真理を知らない人々には、さらに大きな愛を示す必要があります。私たちは彼らを愛し、彼らに正しい生き方の模範を示し、聖約の道へと優しく導く義務があります。

Of course we do.  In fact, we need to show forth even greater love to those who have not yet found the truths of the gospel.  We have a duty to love them, to set an example of righteous living for them, to gently point them toward the covenant path.

良い羊飼いのたとえでは、羊飼いは９９匹の羊を残し、１匹の迷える羊を探しに行きました。

In the parable of the good shepherd, the shepherd leaves the 90 and 9 and goes in search of the one lost sheep.  

良い羊飼いは「あの羊はいつも問題を起こすから探さない」とは言いません。「あの羊は他の羊とは違うから、私の群れに合わない」とは言いません。「あの羊は自ら群れの保護から離れることを選んだので、何が起ころうと自分の責任だ」とも言いません。

He does not say, “that sheep is always causing problems, so I won’t look for him”.  He does not say, “that sheep is different than the rest of my sheep, so he doesn’t fit in with my flock”.  He does not say, “that sheep chose to leave the protection of the flock, so whatever happens to him is his own fault”.

良い羊飼いは、一匹の迷える羊を心配して探し出し、その羊が群れの中に戻ってくると喜ぶのです。

The good shepherd anxiously searches for the one lost sheep and rejoices when that sheep returns to the flock.  

さて新しい週が始まります。自分自身の生活を吟味し、兄弟姉妹の誰かに敵意や憎しみを抱いていないかチェックしてみましょう。使徒ヨハネとネルソン大管長が教えてくれた、心から偏見をなくすことの大切さを心に留めて過ごしましょう。私たちと同じであろうと、異なっていようと、周りにいるすべての人々を愛するよう更に努力しましょう。私たちは皆、兄弟姉妹であることを忘れないでください。

As we go through this week, let’s examine our own lives and see if there is any animosity or hatred for any of our brothers or sisters.  Let’s remember what both the Apostle John and President Nelson have taught us about the importance of eliminating all prejudice from our hearts.  Let’s do better to love all those around us, whether they are like us or whether they are different.  Let’s remember that we truly are all brothers and sisters.
