死人にさえ福音が宣べ伝えられたのは、彼らは肉においては人間としてさばきを受けるが、霊において神に従って生きるようになるためである。ペテロ第一の手紙４：６

For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.  1 Peter 4:6

この聖句では、使徒たちの時代には、教会員が救いの計画を理解していたことをペテロは教えています。この聖句は、天父がすべての子供たちに大きな愛情を注いでおられることを思い起こさせてくれます。また、福音のメッセージと祝福を受ける機会は誰にでも平等に与えられなければならないという重要な原則を教えています。

In this verse, the Apostle Peter teaches us that the Plan of Salvation was understood and known by members of the Church in the days of the Apostles.  It reminds us of the great love Heavenly Father has for all of his children.  It also teaches us the important principle that everyone must have an equal opportunity to receive the message and blessings of the gospel.

ペテロは、私たちと同じように、初期の教会員たちにも、福音は霊界にいる人々に宣べ伝えられていたと教えています。救い主の肉体が墓に横たわっていた間、主の霊は霊界に行きました。そこで救い主は、死者の間で偉大な伝道活動を組織されました。

Peter teaches the early members of the Church, as well as us, that the gospel was being preached to those in the Spirit world.  During the time that the Savior’s body was in the tomb, his spirit went to the Spirit world.  There, the Savior organized the great missionary work among the dead.   

この教義は初期の教会ではよく知られていました。しかし、神権の鍵が地上から奪われた後、他の多くの「明白で単純な事柄」とともに、この知識は失われました。預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して、主は再びこの業に関する鍵を回復されました。

This doctrine was well-known in the early Church.  However, along with many other “plain and simple things”, this knowledge was lost after the priesthood keys were taken from the earth.  Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord has once again restored the keys of this work.

このような大胆な教義を教える宗教団体が他にあるでしょうか。福音を知らずに死んでいった人々に希望を与える宗教団体が他にあるでしょうか？神がすべての子を愛しておられることを教えられる宗教団体が他にあるでしょうか？

What other religious group teaches such a bold doctrine?  What other religious group offers any hope for those who died without a knowledge of the gospel?  What other religious group can teach that God does love all his children?

福音が教えられていなかった時代や場所に住んでいた何百万人もの神の子どもたちに、救いに必要な儀式を受ける道を与えずに、どうして神は愛に満ちた神であり得るのでしょうか？そのような善良な人々は、永遠の悲しみと暗闇に運命づけられているのでしょうか？

How can God be a loving God without providing a way for those millions of his children, who lived in a time or place where the gospel was not known, to receive the necessary ordinances of salvation?  Are those good people doomed to eternal sorrow and darkness?

預言者ジョセフ・スミスは、この教義は「永遠の福音に属するすべての事項の中で最も栄光ある事項」（教義と聖約128：17）であると宣言しています。預言者はこの現世での務めの最後の数カ月の大半をこの教義について聖徒に教え、自分たちの先祖のために神殿で儀式を行う機会を準備するために費やしました。

The Prophet Joseph Smith declared that this was the “most glorious of all subjects belonging to the everlasting gospel” (D&C 128:17).  The Prophet spent much of the last months of his mortal ministry teaching the Saints about this doctrine and preparing them for the opportunity to perform ordinances in the Temple for their own ancestors.

President Joseph F. Smith was shown in vision the great work that is being done among the spirits in the Spirit world (D&C 138).  They are being taught the gospel of Jesus Christ.  They are taught to have faith in God and to repent of their sins.  However, that is where they have to stop and wait.

彼らは私たちの助けなしには進歩できません。時には何百年もの間、私たちが彼らの名前を神殿に提出し、彼らに代わって救いの儀式を受けるのを待っています。あなたはその務めを果たしていますか？

They cannot progress without our help.  They wait, sometimes for hundreds and hundreds of years, for us to take their name to the Temple and receive the ordinances of salvation on their behalf.  Are we doing our duty?

The Prophet Joseph Smith urged the Saints to understand the great importance of this work.  He said that this work “cannot be lightly passed over”.  “For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation.”  “They without us cannot be made perfect – neither can we without our dead be made perfect.”  Are we doing our duty?

ファミリーサーチやインターネットなどの現代的なツールを使えば、自分の先祖を調べることは以前よりも簡単になりました。地上には今、多くの神殿があり、救いの儀式を受けずに亡くなった人々のために行動することは、以前よりも容易になりました。私たちは自分の義務を果たしているでしょうか？

With modern tools like FamilySearch, the Internet, and so on, it is easier than ever before to search out our own ancestors.  With many temples around the earth, it is easier than ever before to act on behalf of those who have died without receiving the ordinances of salvation.  Are we doing our duty?

私たちは皆、いつの日か霊界に戻ります。そこで、私たちが助けた人々に会うことでしょう。彼らは涙を流しながら私たちを抱き、接吻をすることでしょう。彼らは私たちをシオンの山の救世主として扱ってくれるでしょう。そのとき私たちは、この業がどれほど重要であるか更に深く理解することでしょう。私たちは自分の義務を果たしているでしょうか？

Someday, each of us will return to the Spirit world.  There we will meet those whom we have helped.  They will fall upon our necks and kiss us, with tears streaming down their faces.  They will treat us as Saviors on Mount Zion.  Then we will understand more fully just how important this work really is.  Are we doing our duty?

新しい週が始まります。すでに霊界に行き、今は暗闇の中で誰かの助けを待っている人たちを助ける時間を増やす方法を探しましょう。私たちの救いは、彼らの救いとつながっていることを忘れないようにしましょう。 神の子供たちが救いの儀式を受けるのを助けることによって、私たちが主を愛していることを示せるよう、更に努力しましょう。私たちの義務を果たしましょう！

As we go through this next week, let’s find ways to spend more time helping those who have already gone over to the Spirit world and who now wait in darkness for someone to help them.  Let’s remember that our salvation is linked with their salvation.  Let’s do more to show the Lord that we love him by helping his children receive the ordinances of salvation.  Let’s do our duty!
