あなたがたのうち、知恵に不足している者があれば、その人は、とがめもせずに惜しみなくすべての人に与える神に、願い求めるがよい。そうすれば、与えられるであろう。ただ、疑わないで、信仰をもって願い求めなさい。疑う人は、風の吹くままに揺れ動く海の波に似ている。　ヤコブ１:５−６

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.  For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.  James 1:5-6

ヤコブの手紙は重要で意義深い聖句に満ちています。ヤコブは使徒でした。彼の本名は(英語で)「Jacob」でしたが、「Jacob」という名前がユダヤ人の名前に似ていたため、欽定訳者は「Jacob」を「James」という名前に変えました。興味深いことに、日本語の新約聖書ではヤコブの正しい名前が使われています。

The Book of James is full of important and significant scripture verses.  James was an Apostle.  His real name was Jacob, but the King James translators changed it to “James” because “Jacob” sounded like a Jewish name.  Interestingly, the Japanese New Testament does use his correct name. 

ヤコブは、「御言を聞くだけでなく、行う者」となるよう教えています。彼は「清く汚れのない信心」について教え、また、「行いを伴わなければ、それだけでは死んだものである」と説明しています。また、誰かが病気になったら、長老たちに祝福を求めるべきであると教えています。そして、「義人の祈りは、大いに力があり、効果のあるものだ」と祈りについても教えています。

James talks about being “doers of the word and not hearers only”.  He teaches us about “pure religion and undefiled”.  He explains that “faith without works is dead”.  He also reminds us that, when someone is sick, they should ask the Elders for a blessing.  And, he taught us about prayer, saying, “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”.

しかし、ヤコブの手紙で最も知られているのは1章5節です。これは預言者ジョセフ・スミスが聖なる森に行く動機になった聖句です。

But clearly the most well-known verse from James is the 5 verse of chapter 1.  This is the verse that the Prophet Joseph Smith says motivated him to go to the Sacred Grove.  

預言者がなぜこの聖句に目を向けたのか、不思議に思ったことはありませんか。ジョセフの兄ウィリアムは、ジョセフと一緒にメソジストの礼拝に出席したことがありました。その礼拝で、ジョージ・レーン牧師がヤコブ1章5節について説教をしました。ジョセフがこの聖句を再読し、聖なる森に行くよう聖霊に促されたのは、その集会の直後のことでした。

Have you ever wondered why the Prophet turned to this verse?  Joseph’s brother, William, said that he and Joseph had attended a Methodist service.  At that service, the Reverend George Lane preached a sermon based on James 1:5.  It was shortly after that meeting that Joseph re-read the scripture and was prompted by the Spirit to go to the Sacred Grove.

ジョセフが聖分を学び、御霊の促しに従ったおかげで、イエス・キリストの福音が地上に回復されたのです。

Because of Joseph’s study of the scriptures, and because of his obedience to the promptings of the Spirit, the gospel of Jesus Christ was restored to the earth.  

預言者ジョセフ・スミスのように、私たちも聖文を祈りながら学ぶことによって知恵を見いだすことができます。聖文を学ぶことによって、聖霊がわたしたちが読んだ真理について証ししてくださるようになるのです。

Just like the Prophet Joseph Smith, we too can find wisdom as we prayerfully study the scriptures.  As we study the scriptures, we make it possible for the Holy Ghost to testify to us about the truths that we read.  

聖霊は、私たちの決断を助けてくださいます。聖霊からの促しを受けた後、その促しに従うのは私たちの責任です。聖霊の促しに正確に従うなら、私たちは良い決断を下すことができます。

The Holy Ghost will help us with our own decisions.  When we receive promptings from the Holy Ghost, it is our responsibility to follow those promptings.  If we follow the promptings of the Spirit with exactness, we will be able to make good decisions.

時には、聖霊は私たちが期待したり、受たいと思う答えを与えてくれないことがあります。そのような場合は特に、受けた促しに従うことが重要です。なぜそのような促しを受けたのかわからないかもしれませんが、私たちは、ニーファイのように自分が何をすべきなのか「あらかじめ知ら」なくても進むべきなのです。

Sometimes, the Holy Ghost does not give us the answer we expect or want to receive.  It is especially in those cases that it is important to follow the promptings that we receive.  We may not know why we are being told to do something, but like Nephi, we should go forward “not knowing beforehand” what we should do.

もし私たちが受けた促しに従わないなら、それは「揺れ動く波に似ている」ことになります。「揺れ動く波に似ている」とは、御霊が促したことに従っていないことを意味します。私たちは、高慢にも自分が何をすべきかをよく知っていると思っているのかもしれません。自分が受けた促しが気に入らなくて、違うことをしたいのかもしれません。揺れ動く波に似ていると、私たちが求める祝福を受けられません。

If we fail to follow the promptings we receive, we are “wavering”.  “Wavering” means that we are not being obedient to what the Spirit has prompted us to do.  Maybe we think we know better what we should do.  Maybe we don’t like the prompting we received and want to do something different.  Wavering will not bring us the blessings we seek.

しかし、もし私たちが従順であれば、私たちの思考と行動は導かれます。時が来れば、何をすべきかが示され、私たちが求めているすべての祝福を受けることでしょう。

However, if we are obedient, we will be guided and directed in our thoughts and actions.  We will be shown what to do, when the time is right.  We will receive all the blessings we are asking for.  

新しい週が始まります。御霊の促しに耳を傾けることを心がけて過ごしましょう。知恵を求め、そして受けた促しに従って行動しましょう。堅く、忠実でありましょう。たとえ祈りの答えが私たちの期待するものでなかったとしても、主はすべてのことをご存知で、私たちをいつも良い方向へと導いてくださることを忘れないでください。

As we go through this next week, let’s try harder to listen to the promptings of the Spirit.  Let’s ask for wisdom and then act on the promptings what we receive.  Let’s be firm and faithful.  Even if the answer to our prayer is not something that we expect, let’s remember that the Lord knows all things and will always direct us for good.
