わたしを強くして下さるかたによって、何事でもすることができる。 ピリピ人への手紙４：１３

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.  Philippians 4:13

この聖句は、使徒パウロが語った中で最も意味深い言葉のひとつです。この節の教えには、力強いものがあります。

This verse is one of the most profound statements that the Apostle Paul makes.  Inherent in this verse is a powerful message.

パウロが教会のさまざまな支部に送った手紙を読むと、彼が受けなければならなかった試練、困難、苦難が理解できます。彼は改心したときから、絶えず教会のさまざまな支部を回っていました。

As we read the letters Paul sent to the various branches of the Church, we come to understand the trials, difficulties, and hardships that Paul had to suffer.  From the time of his conversion, he traveled continually around to the various branches of the Church.  

パウロが旅しなければならなかった地域は、今の私たちには狭い地域に思えるかもしれませんが、パウロの時代には当時知られているほぼ全域に及んでいました。飛行機も列車も高速船もない時代、移動手段は徒歩か帆船しかありませんでした。

Although the area he had to travel through may seem small to us today, in the days of Paul it was almost the entire known world.  And, with no airplanes, trains, or fast ships, the only two ways to travel were on foot or on a sailing ship. 

旅の途中、彼は何度も獄に入れられました。ユダヤ人当局に殴られ、鞭打たれました。船が沈没したり、何時間も水の中で生き延びなければなりませんでした。彼は衣服以外何も持って行きませんでした。

During his travels, he was put in prison several times.  He was beaten and scourged by the Jewish authorities.  He was in a ship that sank and had to survive in the water for many hours.  He had nothing with him but the clothes on his back.

しかしながら、使徒パウロは教会で最も偉大な宣教師のひとりでした。若きアルマと同じように、彼は邪悪で敵対的な人々に満ちた世界にイエス・キリストの福音を宣べ伝えるためにすべてを投げ出したのです。

And yet, the Apostle Paul was one of the greatest missionaries of the Church.  Like Alma the younger, he gave up everything in order to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to a world filled with wicked and hostile people.

彼は大きな試練と苦難にもかかわらず、主が求められることは何でも行うとはっきり宣言していました。預言者ジョセフ・スミスは、「主が命じられるとき，それを行いなさい」と教えています。パウロもこれと同じ原則を教えています。

In spite of his great trials and hardships, he still proclaimed very clearly that he would do whatever the Lord required of him.  The Prophet Joseph Smith taught this same principle when he said, “When the Lord commands, do it”.

私たちは、この原則をどのように自分の人生に当てはめればよいのでしょうか。私たちはパウロのような苦難に見舞われることはまずないでしょう。しかし、私たちの人生には試練や苦しみ、困難がつきものです。それがこの死すべき現世なのです。

How do we apply this principle in our own lives?  It is very unlikely that any of us will ever be required to suffer hardships like Paul did.  However, in each of our lives, there will be trials, suffering, and challenges.  That is just part of this mortal existence.

私たちの試練は、短期的なもの、長期的なもの、そしておそらくこの世を去るまで続く健康上の問題かもしれません。経済的な試練かもしれません。失業、投資の失敗、詐欺などもあるでしょう。私たちの試練は霊的なものかもしれません。サタンは私たちの証を攻撃し、私たちが聖約の道から離れるよう誘惑しています。

Our trials may be health challenges, some short-term, some long-term, and some perhaps until we leave this life.  Our trials may be financial, the loss of a job, poor investments, or fraud.  Our trials may be spiritual, Satan attacking our testimony and tempting us to leave the covenant path.  

パウロのように、私たちは常に救い主の助けに頼ることができます。もしかしたら私たちは、自分にはできないと感じるような召しを受けているかもしれません。自分の信条をもっと積極的に他の人々に分かち合うように求められているかもしれません。救いの業を前進させるために、自分の時間をもっと捧げるように求められているかもしれません。

Whatever our own challenges may be, we like Paul, can always rely on the Savior’s help.  Maybe we are given a calling that we feel completely inadequate to fulfill.  Maybe we are asked to be more active in sharing our beliefs with others.  Maybe we are ask to give more of our time to help move the work of salvation forward.

自分の問題が何であるかは関係ありません。聖約の道を歩み、戒めを守り、救い主に助けと導きを求めて祈り求める限り、すべては主の計画通りにうまくいくのです。

It doesn’t matter what are own challenges are.  As long as we stay on the covenant path, as long as we keep the commandments, as long as we turn to our Savior in prayer for help and guidance, everything will work out as the Lord planned it.  

私たちは決して、自分の力だけで大いなることを成し遂げるよう求められてはいません。私たちは常にニーファイのように、イエス・キリストを信じる信仰を持って前進するよう求められているのです。

We are never asked to accomplish great things on our own power.  We are always asked to go forward with faith in Jesus Christ, just like Nephi, not knowing beforehand how we will accomplish the task that we have been given.

新しい週が始まります。使徒パウロの勧告について考え、また、私たちは決してひとりではないことを覚えて新しい週を過ごしましょう。主の助けがあれば、私たちは何でもできるということを心に留めていましょう。主の助けがあれば、私たちは強められるということを忘れず、イエス・キリストに信仰を置いた生活をしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s think about the counsel from the Apostle Paul.  Let’s remember that we are never alone.  Let’s remember that, with the Lord’s help, we can do all things.  Let’s put our faith in Jesus Christ, knowing that with his help, we will be strengthened.
