I marvel that you are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:6-8
教会の支部しかない地域で宣教師として奉仕したことのある人、または支部に集っていたことのある人は、パウロのこの嘆きに共感できるのではないでしょうか。教会に加わるとき、自分の考え、経験、意見を手放せないことがしばしばあります。
Those who may have served as missionaries in areas of the Church where there were only Branches, or those who may have lived in a Branch can probably relate to this lament of Paul. As individuals join the Church, they often bring with them their own ideas, experiences, and opinions.
時には、そのような古い考えや意見を福音の教義よりも優先させてしまうこともあります。神権指導者が新会員に自分の古い考えのどれが有効でどれが無効かを理解させるのは大変なことです。新会員が過去に教えられた古い考えや教義を捨てるのは難しいことです。
Sometimes, they let those old ideas and opinions take precedence over the doctrines of the gospel. It can be a struggle for priesthood leaders to help the new members understand which of their old ideas are valid and which ones are not. It can be a challenge for new members to give up old ideas or doctrines that they have been taught in the past.
パウロが手紙を書いている教会では、すべての会員が新しく教会に入ったばかりの第一世代の会員であるため、パウロは常に同じ福音の基本原則を教えていました。新会員に真の教義を教えることができ、経験と知識を持つ神権指導者はほとんどいませんでした。
Since every member in the Churches that Paul writes to are brand-new, first generation members of the Church, he was constantly teaching them the same basic principles of the gospel. There were very few priesthood leaders who had the experience and the knowledge to teach the new members true doctrine.
パウロはアジア各地を旅する中で、ほとんどの場合、教会に福音以外の考え方が入り込んでいる状況に直面しました。当時の通信手段は非常に限られており、諸教会間の距離も遠かったため、パウロは新会員を教えるために諸教会への手紙に頼らざるを得ませんでした。それはとてももどかしい作業だったに違いありません。
As Paul traveled throughout Asia, he was almost always faced with situations where non-gospel ideas had crept into the Church. Given the very limited communication capabilities of his day, and the great distances between the various Churches, Paul had to rely on letters to the Churches to teach the new members. It must have been a very frustrating task.
しかし、現代においても、「古い考え」を捨てられない会員がいます。その「古い考え」は、教会に入る前の宗教的習慣の場合もあります。また、「古い考え」とは、単に個人的な意見であり、教会で教えられていることよりも優れていると確信している場合もあります。
But even in our day, there are “old ideas” that some members have a difficult time giving up. Sometimes the “old ideas” are simply hold-overs from their religious experiences prior to joining the Church. At other times, the “old ideas” are simply personal opinions that some member is convinced is better than what is being taught at Church.
幸いなことに、私たちには現在パウロが夢にも思わなかったような通信機能があります。生ける預言者や使徒たちが教えてくれるだけでなく、家にいながらにして彼らのメッセージを毎日読むことができるのです。総大会のメッセージも、聖典も、教会の指導者からのソーシャルメディア上のメッセージもあります。
Luckily, we have communications capabilities that Paul could not have even dreamed of. Not only do we have living prophets and apostles to teach us, we can read their messages daily from the comfort of our own home. We have the General Conference messages, the scriptures, and social media messages from the Church leaders.
これだけ素晴らしいテクノロジーがあっても、「古い考え」の問題が完全になくなるわけではありません。サタンとその助力者たちは常に、教義のどこかが間違ってるとか、何年も前に説教壇で語られたことは間違っているとか、預言者や使徒たちが私たちに教えてくれたメッセージよりも自分たちの意見の方が正しいと説得しようとしています。
All this wonderful technology does not completely eliminate the problem of “old ideas”. Satan and his helpers are always there, trying to convince us that some point of doctrine cannot be correct, or that something that was said over the pulpit many years ago was false, or that our own opinions are more correct that the messages taught to us by the prophets and apostles.
私たちが自問すべきなのは、「私は『古い考え』に頼っていないだろうか？ 教会の指導者たちから教えられたことではなく、ソーシャルメディアで読んだことを信じていないだろうか？ 真理をどの情報源に求めているのか？」ということです。
The questions we each need to ask ourselves are, “Am I relying on any ‘old ideas’? Do I believe things I read on social media instead of what was taught by the leaders of the Church? What source do I look to for truth?”
私たちは皆、イエス・キリストの福音を知っています。イエス・キリストが私たちの救い主であり、贖い主であること、私たちの罪を贖ってくださったこと、そしてイエス・キリストが死なれ、復活されたことが、私たち自身の証の基盤となっているのです。私たちは、どこに真理があるかを知っています。どのような教義であっても、それを学び、祈り、聖霊にその真実性を証ししていただくことによって、自分自身の証を得ることができることを知っています。
We all know the gospel of Jesus Christ. The basis for our own testimonies is that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer, that he atoned for our sins, and that he died and was resurrected. We know where to look for truth. We know that we can gain our own testimony of any doctrine by studying it, praying about it, and letting the Holy Ghost testify to us about its truthfulness.
新しい週が始まります。真理をどのように見つけれるのか少し考えてみましょう。私たちが耳を傾ける声について考えてみましょう。疑問を抱いたときに信頼できる情報源に目を向けるようにしましょう。聖霊に教えられることをいとわず、またそれに従えるよう、常に聖約の道をしっかりと歩むよう最善を尽くしましょう。聖霊は常に私たちに真理を教えてくださいます。
As we go through this next week, let’s give some thought to the question of how to find truth. Let’s consider the voices that we listen to. Let’s be sure that we are looking to sources that we can trust when we have questions. Let’s do our best to always stay firmly on the covenant path, willing and able to be taught by the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost will always teach us truth.
