Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?  1 Corinthians 15:29

コリント人への手紙15章には、力強い教義が多く含まれています。パウロはさまざまな方法で、復活の確実性について教えています。救い主は十字架にかけられ、死に、墓に葬られたと述べています。そして聖典で予告されているように、三日目にキリストは死者の中からよみがえられました。

The 15th chapter of 1st Corinthians contains many powerful doctrines.  Paul teaches us about the certainty of the resurrection in many different ways.  He tells us that the Savior was crucified, died, and was laid in the tomb.  Then, on the third day, Christ rose from the dead, as the scriptures had foretold.

キリストの復活後、救い主が使徒たちや、他の多くの人々に目撃されたことをパウロは思い起こさせています。500人以上の人々が復活した救い主を目撃しました。最後に、パウロは救い主を見たと証しています。

After his resurrection, Paul reminds us that the Savior was seen by many people, including the Apostles.  More than 500 people witnessed the Resurrected Savior.  Last of all, Paul testifies that he saw the Savior.

パウロは「もし死者が全くよみがえらないとすれば、死者のためにバプテスマを受ける人々は、何をするのだろうか」と問いかけています。これは、復活の確実性について教えており、聖書の中で最も興味深い聖句の一つです。

In one of the most interesting scriptures in the Bible, Paul teaches us about the certainty of the resurrection by asking the question, “What shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all?”

これは、死者のためのバプテスマという儀式が、古代の使徒たちの時代に教会で行われていたことを物語っており、非常に興味深いことです。パウロは、コリントの教会員がすでにその教義を理解していることを知っていたので、死者のためのバプテスマの意味を説明する必要がありませんでした。それがこの聖句を非常に力強いものにしています。

This question is very interesting because it tells us that the ordinance of baptism for the dead was practiced by the Church in the days of the ancient Apostles.  Paul does not spend any time explaining what baptism for the dead means, since he knows the members of the Church in Corinth already understand that doctrine.  That is what makes this verse so powerful.  

もし死者のためのバプテスマという教義が新しいものであったり、コリントの教会員が理解していないものであったりしたなら、パウロはその儀式について詳しく説明しなければならなかったはずである。パウロが何の説明もしていないという事実は、この教義が当時の教会でよく知られていたことを裏付けています。初期の聖徒たちは神殿を持っていませんでしたが、少なくともこの儀式については知っていました。

If the doctrine of baptism for the dead was something new, or if it was not something that the members in Corinth understood, Paul would have had to explain in detail what the ordinance was for.  The fact that Paul does not offer any explanation confirms to us that this doctrine was well-known in the Church at that time.  Although those early Saints did not have temples, they did at least know about the ordinance. 

預言者ジョセフ・スミスによって回復された神権の鍵は、この神権時代において同じ儀式を行う道を開きました。この神権時代の初期、神殿が利用できるようになる前、聖徒は神殿がなくても、亡くなった家族に代わってこの救いの儀式を行うことが許されていました。

The priesthood keys restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith opened the way for this same ordinance to be performed in this dispensation.  In the very early days of this dispensation, before a temple was available, the Saints were allowed to perform this ordinance of salvation on behalf of their deceased family members without a temple.

預言者ジョセフ・スミスはこの死者のためのバプテスマの教義を「永遠の福音に属するすべての事項の中で最も栄光あるこの事柄」と呼んでいます。

The Prophet Joseph Smith called this doctrine of baptism for the dead “the most glorious of all subjects belonging to the everlasting gospel”.  

この儀式がなければ、また神権の鍵がなければ、先祖がどのように救われるでしょうか。天父はすべての子供たちを等しく愛しておられるのに、どうして一部の子供たちにしかバプテスマを受けさせられないのでしょうか。過去の時代や神権の鍵がない場所に住んでいた人々にとって、それは公平なことなのでしょうか。

Without this ordinance, and without the keys of the priesthood, how would any of our ancestors be saved?  How could Heavenly Father love all of his children equally, but only allow some of them to be baptized?  How would that be fair to those individuals who lived in times past and in places where those priesthood keys were not available?  

パウロが死者のためのバプテスマの教義に言及したことは、福音がどの時代においても同じであることを確認する私たちへの偉大な証であります。また天父は、いつ、どこに住んでいたとしても、すべての息子や娘を祝福する計画を持っておられることも教えています。

Paul’s reference to the doctrine of baptism for the dead is a great testimony to us, confirming that the gospel is the same in every dispensation.  It also teaches us that Heavenly Father has a plan to bless all of his sons and daughters, no matter when or where they lived.  

死者のためのバプテスマの教義は、天父の子供たちの救いに不可欠なことです。私たちは、先祖の名前を見つけるか、神殿に参入して先祖に代わってこの儀式を行うことにより、この教義に参加できるという大きな祝福を受けています。

The doctrine of baptism for the dead is essential to the salvation of Heavenly Father’s children.  We have the great blessing to be able to participate in this doctrine, either by finding the names of our ancestors, or by attending the Temple and participating in this ordinance on their behalf.

新しい週が始まります。使徒パウロがこのすべての教義の中で「最も輝かしい」教義について教えてくれたことを覚えておきましょう。最善を尽くして自分の先祖を探し出し、彼らが救いの儀式を受けるのを助けて、天父の子供たちの救いに参加しましょう。この偉大な業に積極的に参加しましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember what the Apostle Paul taught us about this “most glorious” of all doctrines.  Let’s do our best to participate in the salvation of Heavenly Father’s children by searching out our own ancestors and by helping them to receive the ordinances of salvation.  Let’s be active participants in this great work.
