肉の思いは死であるが、霊の思いは、いのちと平安とである。ローマ人の手紙８：６

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Romans 8:6

ローマ人への手紙の中で、使徒パウロはローマの人々にモーセの律法とイエス・キリストの福音の違いについて教えています。私たちもこの原則を理解することは重要です。

In his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul teaches the people in Rome about difference between the Law of Moses and the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It is important for us to understand this principle as well.

このメッセージは目新しいものではありません。同じメッセージがニーファイ人にも教えられていました。例えば、モーサヤ書13章で、アビナダイはノア王の民に、今はモーセの律法を守らなければならないが、救いはモーセの律法によってもたらされるのではないと教えました。

This message is not new.  The same message was taught to the Nephites.  For example, in the 13th chapter of Mosiah, Abinadi taught the people of king Noah that they must keep the Law of Moses for now, but that salvation does not come by the Law of Moses.  

その他のニーファイ人の預言者たちも、モーセの律法 が「効力を失う」ことについて人々に教えました。彼らは人々に、モーセの律法は単に人々の心をイエス・キリストの偉大な犠牲へと向けるための道具であることを思い起こさせています。

Other Nephite prophets taught the people about the “deadness” of the Law of Moses.  They reminded the people that the Law of Moses was simply a tool to point the minds of the people toward the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

パウロはローマ人への手紙を通して、同様の教義を説いています。パウロは律法を “肉”、つまりこの世のものに例えています。「肉」とは、ベニヤミン王が「生まれながらの人」と呼んだものです。私たちを誘惑に導くのは肉の欲望です。肉の弱さが私たちに罪を犯させるのです。

Paul teaches a similar doctrine throughout his letter to the Romans.  He compares the law to “the flesh” or to earthly things.  The “flesh” is what king Benjamin called the “natural man”.  It is the lusts of the flesh that lead us into temptation.  It is the weakness of the flesh that makes us commit sin.  

パウロは「肉」、言い換えれば、私たちの死すべき肉体はいつか死ぬことを私たちに思い起こさせています。永遠に生き続けるのは霊だけです。

Paul reminds us that “the flesh”, or in other words, our mortal bodies, will die someday.  It is only the Spirit that lives on for eternity.  

この世の主なテストは、「肉 」に従うか、それとも「御霊」に従うかと言うことです。

The primary test in this life is whether we will follow “the flesh” or whether we will follow the Spirit.

これは永遠の結果をもたらす決断になります。

This is a decision of eternal consequences.  

もし私たちが肉に従うなら、もし生まれながらの人に従うなら、私たちはサタンに捕らわれることになります。サタンは、すべての人が自分のように惨めになることを望んでいます。サタンは、自分が肉体を持つことも、進歩することも、永遠の家族の一員になることもできないことを知っています。その惨めさから、サタンは犠牲を払う必要も、一生懸命働く必要も、戒めを守る必要もないと信じ込ませようと懸命に働くのです。

If we follow the flesh, if we let the natural man prevail, we are letting Satan capture us.  Satan wants everyone to be miserable like he is.  Satan knows that he can never have a body, can never progress, can never be part of an eternal family.  So in his misery, he works very hard to trick us into believing that there is no need to sacrifice, to work hard, or to keep the commandments.  

一方、主は、天父のすべての子どもたちのために、偉大なる「幸福の計画」を備えておられます。天父は、私たちが不幸ではなく、喜びを得ることを望んでおられます。主は、私たちが生きるためにこの世を創造されました。私たちに知識を与えてくださいました。正しい指導者を与えてくださいました。聖文を与えてくださいました。

On the other hand, the Lord has prepared the great Plan of Happiness for all of Heavenly Father’s children.  Heavenly Father wants us to have joy, not misery.  He has created this world for us to live in.  He has given us knowledge.  He has given us righteous leaders.  He has given us the scriptures.

最も重要なことは、天父が私たちに自由意志を与えてくださっているということです。私たちは常に、生まれながらの人の道に従うか、幸福の計画に従うかを自由に選ぶことができるのです。この世でも来世でも、幸福か不幸かを決めるのは、私たち自身の選択と決断なのです。

Most importantly, Heavenly Father has given us free agency.  We are always free to choose to follow the way of the natural man or to choose to follow the Plan of Happiness.  It is our own choices and decisions that will determine our happiness or misery, both in this world and in the world to come.  

私たちは皆、この人生で不幸や悲しみ、苦難、試練を経験します。それはテストの一部に過ぎません。しかし、もし私たちが勇気を持ち、イエス・キリストに従い、その戒めを守ることを選ぶなら、いつの日かすべての試練から解放され、天父と、救い主イエス・キリストと、そして自分の家族とともに、永遠の命という報いを受けるという確かな約束があるのです。

We all experience unhappiness, sadness, hardship, and trials in this life.  That is just part of the test.  But if we are valiant, if we choose to follow Jesus Christ and to keep his commandments, we have the sure promise that someday we will rest from all our trials and receive the rewards of eternal life with our Heavenly Father, with our Savior Jesus Christ, and with our own families.

新しい週が始まります。常に霊的な心を持つよう最善を尽くして過ごしましょう。イエス・キリストが私たちに命じておられることを行いましょう。聖典を読み、集会に出席し、人々に奉仕し、イエス・キリストの真の従者の良い模範となりましょう。「いのちと平安」を受けるにふさわしい者となりましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s do our best to always be spiritually minded.  Let’s do the things that Jesus Christ has commanded us to do.  Let’s read our scriptures, attend our meetings, serve others, and be good examples of true followers of Jesus Christ.  Let’s be worthy of receiving “life and peace”.
