アグリッパがパウロに言った、「おまえは少し説いただけで、わたしをクリスチャンにしようとしている」。パウロが言った、「説くことが少しであろうと、多くであろうと、わたしが神に祈るのは、ただあなただけでなく、きょう、わたしの言葉を聞いた人もみな、わたしのようになって下さることです。このような鎖は別ですが」。使徒行伝２６：２８−２９

Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.  And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.  Acts 26:28-29

新約聖書の記録のほとんどは、使徒パウロによるものです。彼は異邦人に福音のメッセージを伝えるために召された最初の使徒でした。パウロの旅、成功、試練など、多くの素晴らしい物語があります。彼は、偉大な宣教師になる方法について、私たちにすばらしい模範を示しています。

Most of the records in the New Testament come from the writings of the Apostle Paul.  He was the first Apostle called to take the message of the gospel to the Gentile nations.  There are many great stories of Paul, his travels, his successes, and his trials.  He set a great example for all of us as to how to be a great missionary.

この聖句では、パウロはイエス・キリストの福音を宣べ伝えたために、ユダヤ人によって投獄されています。彼が獄中にいたとき、ヘロデ・アグリッパが当時の総督であったフェスト閣下を訪ねてきました。アグリッパはユダヤ人の信仰と教えに精通しており、パウロが何を説いているのかを知りたがっていました。

In this scripture, Paul has been put in prison by the Jews for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.  While he was in prison, Herod Agrippa came to visit Festus, who was the governor at that time.  Agrippa was familiar with the beliefs and teaching of the Jews and wanted to know what Paul was preaching.

パウロは宮廷に連行され、アグリッパは彼に自分の信条を説明するよう求めました。そこでパウロは、自分の略歴を話しました。パリサイ人として育てられた彼は、キリスト教徒を積極的に迫害してきたことをアグリッパに話ました。そして、アグリッパに自分が見た幻について、またその幻の中で主が語られたことについて話しました。

Paul was brought into the Court and Agrippa asked him to explain his beliefs.  Paul then presented a short history of his own life.  He said he had been raised as a Pharisee.  He told Agrippa that, as a Pharisee, he had actively persecuted the Christian people.  He then told Agrippa about his vision and about what the Lord had told in that vision.

パウロは、アグリッパが古代の預言者たちを信じていることを知っており、それらの預言者たちがそれぞれイエス・キリストについてどのように証していたかをアグリッパに説明しました。アグリッパは、預言者たちが「キリストが苦難を受けること、また、死人の中から最初によみがえって、この国民と異邦人とに、光を宣べ伝えるにいたることをあかしした」ことを教えていたと言いました。

Paul knew that Agrippa believed in the ancient prophets and explained to Agrippa how each of those prophets had testified of Jesus Christ.  He said that the prophets had taught, “That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and unto the Gentiles”.

信者ではなかったフェスト閣下は、パウロに「気が狂っている」と言いました。パウロはフェスト閣下に、自分は気が狂っているのではなく、「まじめな真実の言葉を語っている」のだと言いました。そこでパウロは、アグリッパに信じるかどうか尋ねました。アグリッパは、クリスチャンになることをほぼ確信していると語りました。問題は、アグリッパが力ある政治指導者であったことでした。もし彼がクリスチャンになれば、政治的権力を失うことになります。彼にとって、イエス・キリストの福音よりも政治権力の方が重要だったのです。

Festus, who was not a believer, told Paul that he was saying crazy things.  Paul to Festus that he was not mad, “but speak forth words of truth and soberness”.  Paul then asked Agrippa if he believed.  Agrippa said that he was almost convinced to become a Christian.  The problem was that Agrippa was a powerful political leader.  If he became a Christian, he would lose his political power.  Political power was more important to him than the gospel of Jesus Christ.

そしてパウロは、自分の最大の望みと願いは、すべての人がイエス・キリストの証を得て、主の真の教会の一員となることだと述べています。

Paul then said that his greatest hope and desire was that everyone could gain a testimony of Jesus Christ and become a member of the Lord’s true Church.  

私たちはパウロのような立場に置かれることはありませんが、イエス・キリストの福音を大胆に証することはできます。救い主の堅固な証を持ち、伝えることはできます。パウロのように、他の人々が福音とその救いの原則について学べるように、できる限りのことをすることができます。イエス・キリストに従う者の良き模範となることができるのです。

We will never be placed in a position like Paul, but we can be bold in declaring the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We can be firm in our testimony of the Savior.  We can, like Paul, do everything we can to help others learn about the gospel and it’s saving principles.  We can be good examples of a follower of Jesus Christ.  

新しい週が始まります。パウロの模範を覚えて過ごしましょう。自分の信念を周りの人々に伝える機会を探しましょう。真理を大胆に証しましょう。サタンの策略に屈しないようにしましょう。サタンは、私たちが福音を分かち合うことを望んではいません。イエス・キリストは、私たちがすべての人に福音を伝えることを望んでおられるのです。私たちが従うのは誰でしょうか？

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the example of Paul.  Let’s look for opportunities to share our beliefs with those around us.  Let’s be bold in declaring the truth.  Let’s not give in to Satan’s tricks.  Satan does not want us to share the gospel with anyone.  Jesus Christ wants us to share the gospel with everyone.  Who are we going to follow?
