しかし、あなたがたの間では、そうであってはならない。かえって、あなたがたの間で偉くなりたいと思う者は、仕える人となり、あなたがたの間でかしらになりたいと思う者は、すべての人の僕とならねばならない。マルコ１０:４３−４４

But so shall it not be among you; but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be the servant of all.  Mark 10:43-44

世の中で最も求められているのは、名声や富、権力のように思われます。これらはプライドにつながるものです。有名な人、裕福な人、権力のある人は、時折、自分を特別に扱って欲しいと期待します。彼らは、自分がいかに重要な存在であるかを知ってもらいたいと思っています。人々が自分に仕えてくれることを期待します。

In this world, it seems that the things most sought after are fame, wealth, and power.  All these are things that lead to pride.  People who are famous, people who are wealthy, people who are powerful, often expect special privileges in this life.  They want everyone to see how important they are.  They expect people to serve them.

主が教導の業をされていた時、共にいた使徒たちの中にも、時折、高慢な態度が見られました。使徒のうち二人が、イエスに「来世ではひとりをあなたの右に、ひとりを左にすわれるように」約束してほしいと頼みました。これを聞いた他の十人の使徒たちは憤慨しました。

Even among the Lord’s apostles who were with him during his mortal ministry, there was occasional pride.  Two of the apostles asked Jesus to promise them that they would be able to sit on his right hand and on his left hand in the next world.  When the other ten apostles heard this, they were angry.

主はその二人の使徒を優しく戒め、彼らが求めていることはふさわしくないと言われました。主は使徒たちに、そして私たちにも、非常に重要な原則を教えられました。主の王国では、他の人に仕えることが重要であると教えられたのです。私たちは、名声や富や権力といった、世間が評価するものを求めてはいけません。むしろ、周りの人々に仕えることを求めるべきです。

The Lord gently rebuked those two apostles and told them what they were asking for was not proper.  He taught his apostles, and us as well, a very important principle.  He taught us that in the Lord’s kingdom, it is service to others that counts.  We are not to seek the things the world values, like fame, wealth, or power.  Rather, we are to seek to serve those around us.  

私たちは、困っている人を助けるべきです。私たちは、他の人に親切にするべきです。私たちは、他の人を励まし、強くする方法を探すべきです。

We are to help those in need.  We are to be kind to others.  We are to look for ways to encourage and strengthen others.

多くの宗教では、指導者は印象的な服を着ているので、すぐにわかります。特別なローブ、特別な帽子、特別な宝石を身につけるのです。彼らは注目を集めて、即座に有力な存在であるとわかってほしいのです。

In many religions, the leaders are immediately recognizable because of the impressive clothing they wear.  They wear special robes, or special caps or hats, or special jewelry.  They want to stand out and to be easily recognized for their importance.

しかし、主の教会では、私たちは皆平等です。預言者でさえも、特別な衣服やローブを身に着けている人はいません。主の教会の指導者たちは、自分が特別な存在であると認められようとはしていません。

But in the Lord’s Church, we are all equal.  No one, not even the Prophet, wears any special clothing or robes.  The leaders of the Lord’s Church do not try to be recognized as being someone special.  

私たちも皆、救い主の模範に従うのです。主は、力強い王として、豊かな衣をまとい、高価な宝石を身につけて来られませんでした。神の子であるにもかかわらず、謙虚な人として来られたのです。主は、人に仕えてもらうためではなく、人に仕えるために来られたのです。そして、私たち一人ひとりのために、私たちのすべての罪のために、その代価として命を捧げるために来られたのです。

In this, we all follow the example of our Savior.  He did not come as a powerful king, dressed in rich robes, or wearing expensive jewelry.  He came as a humble man, even though he was the Son of God.  He came not to be served, but to serve others.  He came to give his life as a ransom for each of us, for all of our sins.

私たちは、喜んで救い主に従いますか？ 困っている人を助ける機会を探していますか？知り合いや好きな人だけに奉仕を制限していませんか？自分の信念、国籍、言語、経済状況に関係なく、すべての人に奉仕するよう努力していますか？

Are we willing to follow the Savior?  Do we look for opportunities to help people in need?  Do we limit our service to just those that we know and like?  Do we strive to minister to everyone, regardless of their own beliefs, nationality, language, or economic situation?

多くの場合、奉仕の機会は小さくて簡単なことです。新聞の見出しになるようなものではありません。多くの場合、私たちが助けたその人以外、私たちの奉仕について知ることはまずありません。私たちが親切にし、奉仕するのは、世間から見られるためではなく、天父から見られるためなのです。

Ministering opportunities are most often small and simple things.  They don’t make the headlines of the newspapers.  Often, no one other than the person we help even knows about our service.  We provide kindness and service not to be seen of the world, but to be seen by our Heavenly Father.  

主のより良い僕になるために、最善を尽くしましょう。小さなことでも良いので、奉仕する機会を増やしましょう。自分の知っている人だけに奉仕するのではなく、「すべての人に仕える者」となるように心がけましょう。たとえ私たちの奉仕活動を誰も知らなくても、主は私たちの親切をすべて見ておられ、私たちの行動に対して祝福してくださることを覚えていましょう。私たちの救い主、イエス・キリストの良き従者となれますように。

Let’s do our best to be better ministering servants of the Lord.  Let’s find more opportunities to serve, even in small ways.  Let’s not limit our service to just those we know, but let’s be willing to be “the servant of all”.  Let’s remember that, even though no one else may know about our ministering efforts, the Lord sees all of our kindness and will bless us for our actions.  Let’s be good followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
