わたしにはまた、この囲いにいない他の羊がある。わたしは彼らをも道かねばならない。彼らも、わたしの声に聞き従うであろう。そして、ついに一つの群れ、ひとりの羊飼となるであろう。ヨハネ１０：１６
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. John 10:16
これは、新約聖書の中で最も興味深い聖句の一つです。しかし、福音が回復するまでは、よく理解されていませんでした。
This is one of the most interesting scriptures in the New Testament. However, until the restoration of the gospel, it was not well understood.
「他の羊」とは誰ですか？「一つの群れ」とは何ですか？「羊飼」とは誰ですか？
Who are the “other sheep”? What is the “one fold”? Who is the “shepherd”?
救い主の教えを聞いたユダヤ人たちは、「他の羊」とは異邦人のことだと思い込んでいました。聖書が、英語やその他の現代語に翻訳され始めると、キリスト教の学者たちも、救い主が異邦人のことを指していると思い込んでいました。
The Jewish people who heard the Savior teach this assumed that the “other sheep” were the Gentiles. As the Bible began to be translated in to English and other modern languages, the Christian scholars also assumed that the Savior was referring to the Gentiles.
救い主が個人的にユダヤ人以外の人に教えたとは誰も思っていませんでした。世界のさまざまな地域に「他の羊」がいると信じている人はいませんでした。聖書のほかに、救い主の教えを記録したものがあることを誰も信じていませんでした。
No one believed the Savior personally taught anyone other than the Jews. No one believed there were “other sheep” in different areas of the world. No one believed there were more records of the Savior’s teachings in addition to the Bible.
しかし、福音の回復と『モルモン書』の登場によって、この節の真の意味を理解することができるようになりました。それは、モルモン書が真実であることの証であり、イエス・キリストの第二の証です。
However, with the restoration of the gospel and the coming forth of The Book of Mormon, we can now understand the true meaning of this verse. It is a testimony of the truthfulness of The Book of Mormon, a second witness of Jesus Christ.
第3ニーファイ15章の最後の部分で、救い主はニーファイ人に、彼らが「他の羊」であることを教えられました。救い主はまた、イスラエルの他の部族も「他の羊」であると教えられました。そして、彼らにも教えると言われました。
In the last part of the 15th chapter of 3rd Nephi, the Savior teaches the Nephite people that they are some of the “other sheep”. The Savior also taught that the other tribes of Israel were some of the “other sheep”. He said that he was going to teach them, too.
ある意味、私たちも「他の羊」なのです。私たちは、その声を聞き、イエス・キリストの福音を教えられました。救い主が「羊飼」であられることも知っています。私たちは、「一つの群れ」が末日聖徒イエス・キリスト教会であることも知っています。
In a sense, we are also some of the “other sheep”. We have heard his voice and have been taught the gospel of Jesus Christ. We know that the Savior is the “one shepherd”. We know that the “one fold” is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
羊にとって、「群れ」は安全な場所です。危険から逃れられる場所です。休むことができる場所です。羊飼いは、自分の羊を守るのです。羊を見守り、保護するのです。
For sheep, the “fold” is a place of security. It is a place where they can be safe from danger. It is a place where they can rest. The shepherd guards his sheep. He watches over them and protects them.
私たち「他の羊」にとって、群れは教会であり、救い主は真の羊飼いです。教会では、私たちは安全を得ることができます。 世の中の悪から身を守ることができるのです。平和と励ましを得ることができるのです。
For us, as some of the “other sheep”, the fold is the Church and the Savior is the true shepherd. In the Church, we can find security. We can find safety from the evils of the world. We can find peace and encouragement.
羊の群れの中にいて、羊飼いのそばにいる羊は守られます。荒野に迷い込んだ羊は守られません。聖約の道をしっかりと歩んでいる「他の羊」は守られます。聖約の道から外れて迷い込んだ「他の羊」は、サタンや人生の嵐から守られなくなります。
Sheep who stay in the fold and who stay with the shepherd are protected. Sheep who wander out into the wilderness are unprotected. The “other sheep” who stay firmly on the covenant path are protected. The “other sheep” who wander off of the covenant path lose their protection against Satan and the storms of life.
新しい週が始まります。私たちも「他の羊」のひとりであることを覚えていましょう。真の羊飼いが私たちを見守ってくださっていることを忘れないようにしましょう。真の羊の群れの中で、聖約の道をしっかりと歩むために、最善を尽くしましょう。福音のメッセージは、天父の子供たちだけに限定されたものではないことを覚えていましょう。失われた羊を集め、再び羊の群れに戻すために努力をしましょう。
As we go through this week, let’s remember that we too are some of the “other sheep”. Let’s remember that the true Shepherd is watching over us. Let’s do our best to stay firmly on the covenant path, in the safety of the one true fold. Let’s remember that the message of the gospel is not limited to just a few of Heavenly Father’s children. Let’s strive to help gather those lost sheep and bring them back into the fold.
