それで、わたしのこれらの言葉を聞いて行うものを、岩の上に自分の家を建てた賢い人に比べることができよう。マタイ７：２４

Therefore, whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.  Matthew 7:24

マタイによる福音書 5章、6章、7章には、「山上の垂訓」が記録されています。このメッセージは、主が教導の業を始められた頃に人々を教えられたものです。そこには人生における多くの重要な真理、原則、そして教訓が含まれています。

In chapters 5, 6, and 7 of Matthew, the Lord’s “Sermon on the Mount” is recorded.  This message was given to the people at the beginning of the Lord’s earthly ministry.  It contains many important truths, many important principles, and many important lessons for life.

主はこのメッセージを岩の上に家を建てた賢い人のたとえで締めくっておられます。これは砂の上に家を建てた愚かな人のたとえとは対照的です。

At the conclusion of his message, the Lord closes with the example of the wise man who built his house upon a rock.  This example was contrasted with the example of the foolish man who built his house upon the sand.

私たちの中には、幼い時によく歌った初等協会の讃美歌からこの偉大な真理を学んだ人がいます。また成人してから聖文を読んだり研究して、この原則について学んだ人もいます。

Many of us, as small Primary children, learned this great truth from the familiar Primary song.  Others of us learned about this principle later in life, as we read and studied the scriptures.  

多くの重要な福音の真理と同様に、この原則は非常にシンプルなので初等協会の子供でも容易に理解できます。しかし、この力強い教えは、私たち大人もそこから学ぶことができます。

Like many of the most important truths of the gospel, this principle is so simple that a Primary child can easily understand it, yet is so powerful that we as adults still can learn from it.

私たちは、自分が賢く、良い決断を下せると思っています。私たちは、教育を受けており世の知恵について多くを知っています。私たちには、知識と理解を与えてくれた多くの人生経験があります。

We all think that we are wise and that we can make good decisions.  We are all educated and know much about the wisdom of the world.  We all have had many life experiences that have given us knowledge and understanding.

とはいえ、私たちは自問する必要があります。私たちは永遠に重要な事柄に関して「賢い者」か「愚かな者」かということです。私たちは救い主イエス・キリストの岩の上に建っているでしょうか? それとも、世の知恵の砂の上に建っているのでしょうか？

The question we need to ask ourselves, though, is whether we are “a wise man” or a “foolish man” in those things that are of eternal importance.  Are we built upon the rock of our Savior Jesus Christ?  Or are we built upon the sand of the world’s wisdom?

私たちの中には、どちらになりたいかを決めかねている人がいます。私たちは半分岩の上に、半分砂の上に家を建てることがあります。雨が降ったらその家はどうなるでしょうか？

Some of us sometimes have a hard time deciding which side we want to be on.  Sometimes we build our house half on the rock and half on the sand.  What will happen to that house when the rains come?

「岩」はイエス・キリストの福音です。私たちの救い主は、永遠の家を建てることができる唯一の確かで堅固な土台です。聖約の道は、贖い主の岩の上にしっかりと据えられています。

The “rock” is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Our Savior is the only sure and firm foundation on which we can build our eternal home.  The covenant path is firmly planted on the rock of our Redeemer.  

「雨」は、人生の試練と苦しみです。私たちの生活には、さまざまな時期に「雨」があります。世の知恵だけに頼っていたら、試練と苦しみの時に、砂の上に建てられた家を崩壊させかねません。この世の試練と苦しみが、あなたのすべてを洪水のように流し去ることがあります。

The “rain” is the trials and suffering of this life.  We all have “rain” in our lives at various times.  If we rely only on the wisdom of the world, those times of trial and suffering can cause our house built upon the sand to collapse.  Just like the floods that come, the trials and sufferings of this world can sweep everything away.

これは単純明快なメッセージです。私たちの人生で、唯一確かな希望は、救い主イエス・キリストです。他のものはすべて倒れ、他のものはすべて崩壊し、他のものは洪水で洗い流されるかもしれませんが、イエス・キリストの福音は永遠なのです。それは、サタンの雨から私たちを確実に守る唯一の方法なのです。

This is a plain and simple message.  The only sure hope we have in this life is our Savior Jesus Christ.  Everything else may fall, everything else may collapse, everything else may be washed away in the floods, but the gospel of Jesus Christ is eternal.  It is our only sure protection against the rains of Satan.

主の御言葉を「聞く」だけでは十分ではありません。私たちは主の御言葉を「実行」しなければなりません。福音の他のすべての原則と同様に、行動が必要です。まず聞く必要があり、それから実行する必要があります。福音についての知識を得た後、それを生活の中で活かさなければなりません。毎日一歩ずつ、従順な行いをひとつずつ行い、自分の家を建てなければなりません。そうするとき，わたしたちはイエス・キリストの福音の岩の上にしっかりと堅固な家を建てるのです。

It is not enough just the “hear” the sayings of the Lord.  We must “do” the sayings of the Lord.  It requires action on our part, just like all other principles of the gospel.  We must first hear, then we must do.  As we gain knowledge about the gospel, we must put that knowledge to work in our lives.  We must build our own house, one day at a time, one small step at a time, one act of obedience at a time.  As we do so, we will build a strong house, firmly built upon the rock of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

新しい週が始まります。自分の家の土台について考えてみましょう。私たちは本当に岩の上に建っていますか？私たちの基盤は安全で堅固ですか？私たちは聞くだけでなく、行動する決意がありますか？私たちの基盤が少し砂っぽい場合は、岩の上に戻るために必要な改善をしましょう。永遠の家となる家を建てるために必要なことはすべて喜んで行いましょう。

As we go through this coming week, let’s think about the foundation of our own house.  Are we truly built upon the rock?  Is our foundation safe and secure?  Are we willing to not only hear, but to act?  If our foundation is a little bit sandy, let’s make the changes that are needed to get back on the rock.  Let’s be willing to do all that is necessary to build a house that will be an eternal home.
