And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Luke 1:17
Today we begin a new year of study, this time of the New Testament. Unlike the Old Testament, which covered many centuries, the New Testament covers a period of less than 100 years. It begins with the events surrounding the birth of the Savior and ends with the death of the Apostles and the beginning of the Apostasy.
新しい年が始まりました。今日から私たちは新約聖書を学習します。何世紀にもわたる旧約聖書とは異なり、新約聖書は100年未満の期間を網羅しています。それは救い主の誕生から始まり、使徒たちの死と背教の始まりで終わります。
The first event we learn about in the New Testament is the birth of John the Baptist. Israel had not had a prophet for more than 300 years. There had been no one to lead the people or to teach them the word of God.
新約聖書で最初に学ぶ出来事は、バプテスマのヨハネの誕生です。イスラエルには300年以上預言者がいませんでした。人々を導き、神の言葉を教える者がいなかったのです。
Zacharias was a righteous priest of the tribe of Levi. As such, he had a responsibility to perform various rituals in the temple. When he was in the temple, an angel appeared and told him that he would have a son and that the son was to be called John.
ザカリアはレビ族の義なる祭司でした。そのため、彼は神殿でさまざまな儀式を行う責任がありました。彼が神殿にいたとき、天使が現れ、息子が生まれ、その息子はヨハネと呼ばれることになると彼に告げました。
The angel also told Zacharias that “thou shalt have joy and gladness” and that “he shall be great in the sight of the Lord”.

John was a very important prophet and had many heavy responsibilities. He was to prepare the people to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was to call the people to repentance and to baptize those who repented. Most importantly, he was to baptize the Savior.
ヨハネは非常に重要な預言者であり、多くの重い責任を負っていました。彼の務めは人々がイエス・キリストの福音を聞く備えをすることでした。また人々に悔い改めを呼びかけ、悔い改めた人々にバプテスマを授けることでした。最も重要なことは、彼が救い主にバプテスマを施すことでした。
His role was to prepare Israel to hear the message that the Messiah would bring to them. While we do not have any writings of John, he worked hard to preach the gospel to the people in Jerusalem. Eventually, like many prophets before and after, he sealed his testimony with his own blood.

His mission and assignments did not end there, though. He also was given important assignments in the Restoration of the gospel. He was the priesthood leader who was assigned the task of bringing the power and authority of the Aaronic Priesthood back to the earth. On May 15, 1829, he came to the Prophet Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and conferred upon them the Aaronic Priesthood.

This great event made it possible for those who accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ and who wanted to become members of the Church to receive the ordinance of baptism. After centuries of darkness, the authority of the priesthood was once again on the earth. Once again, there were priesthood leaders who were authorized to perform baptisms.
この偉大な出来事から、イエス・キリストの福音を受け入れて教会員になりたいと願う人々がバプテスマの儀式を受けれるようになりました。何世紀にもわたる暗闇の後、神権の権能が再び地上にもたらされました。こうして再び、バプテスマを行う権能を持った神権指導者が現れました。
With the restoration of the keys of the Aaronic Priesthood, the work of the Restoration could go forward. Individuals who truly repented could be baptized by someone holding the priesthood. Sins could now be washed away and those baptized could be prepared to receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost.
アロン神権の鍵が回復されたことで、回復の業は前進しました。心から悔い改めた人は、神権を持つ人からバプテスマを受けれるようになりました。罪は洗い流され、バプテスマを受けた人々は聖霊の賜物を受ける備えができるようになりました。
As we begin a new year, it is a good time to reflect on the mission and life of the prophet John. He served well and faithfully and completed all of his assignments. He stands as a great example to us of a true priesthood leader.
新年の始まりは、預言者ヨハネの使命と生涯を振り返る良い機会です。彼は忠実に奉仕し、すべての任務を成し遂げました。彼は真の神権指導者の素晴らしい模範です。
As we go through this next week, let’s think about the example set by John the Baptist. Let’s remember his faithfulness in completing his assignments. Let’s remember that he did not give up or give in, even when put in prison without having committed any crime. Let’s remember the great events surrounding his appearance to the Prophet Joseph Smith and the restoration of priesthood keys. Let’s do all that we can this year to be like he was, completing all of our own assignments, even when it is difficult.
