Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. Isaiah 59:1-3
In the last few chapters of the book of Isaiah, Isaiah prophecies about the house of Israel. He tells us that, because of sin and transgression, Israel lost many of the blessings that had been promised. He reminds us that, when God seems far from us, it is not God that has moved.

The scriptures are full of examples of righteous individuals being promised great blessings, only to lose those blessings by their own disobedience.

One example that we have recently studied is the sad story of king David. David starts out as a poor shepherd boy, the youngest son of a poor family. Because of his faith, he was able to save Israel from the Philistine army. He was brought into the court of king Saul and was made a powerful leader in Israel.

When Saul, another example of someone who lost great blessings, transgressed the commandments of God, the kingdom was taken from him and given to David. David had the potential to be one of the greatest kings of all Israel. But sadly, he gave in to temptation and committed very serious sins. We are told that his blessings were “taken from him and given to another”.
大きな祝福を失ったもうひとつの例であるサウルは、神の戒めに背いたとき、王国が彼から取り上げられ、ダビデに与えられました。ダビデは全イスラエルで最も偉大な王になる可能性を秘めていました。しかし悲しいことに、彼は誘惑に負けて、非常に重大な罪を犯してしまいました。祝福は「彼から奪われ、他の人に与えられた」と言われています。
Much of the book of Psalms are sad pleadings from David’s heart, acknowledging his sins and seeking forgiveness. As we read the Psalms, we can feel the depth of David’s sorrow. His sorrow is not only for the lost blessings, but for the knowledge that it was his own bad decisions that led him into transgression.

In this scripture, the prophet Isaiah reminds us that, whenever we feel that God is not helping us or hearing our prayers, it is not because God does not love us. It is not because God cannot help us. It is not because he does not want to help us.

It is by our own actions and decisions that we move ourselves away from God. Blessings come as a result of righteous living. Blessings come by obedience to the commandments. Blessings come as we do the small and simple things the Lord has commanded us to do.
私たちが神から遠ざかるのは、私たち自身の行動と選択によるものです。祝福は義にかなった生活の結果としてもたらされます。祝福は戒めに従うことによってもたらされます。主が命じられた小さくて簡単なことを行うことで祝福がもたらされます。
We all make mistakes. We all make mistakes every day. We all make mistakes that prevent us from receiving the blessings that we want. What can we do to move closer to God?
私たちは誰でも間違いを犯します。私たちは誰でも毎日間違いを犯します。私たちは誰でも望む祝福を受けられないような過ちを犯します。神に近づくために何ができるでしょうか。
Through the great Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ, we can repent. We can change our own lives. We can become clean. President Russell M. Nelson has encouraged us to learn about the “joy of daily repentance”.
救い主イエス・キリストの大いなる贖いを通して，わたしたちは悔い改めることができます。私たちは自分の人生を変えることができます。私たちは清くなれます。ラッセル・M・ネルソン大管長は，「日々の悔い改めによる喜び」について学ぶよう勧めています。
Repentance is thought by some to be a punishment. In fact, it is just the opposite. Repentance removes burdens from our souls. It removes the burdens of bad decisions. It removes the burdens of poor choices. It removes the burden of sin and transgression.

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the words of Isaiah. Let’s remember that it is our own poor choices that distance us from the Lord and his blessings. Let’s remember that we can repent and become clean again. Let’s remember that we can choose the right!
