For the vision of all is come unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying: Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot for it is sealed: And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.  Isaiah 29:11-12

Almost three thousand years ago, the prophet Isaiah foretold the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.  In the 29th chapter of Isaiah, in the 4th verse, Isaiah says, “thy speech shall be low out of the ground”, and “thy speech shall whisper out of the earth”.

約 3,000 年前、預言者イザヤはモルモン書の出現を予見しました。イザヤ書 29 章の第 4 節で、イザヤは「あなたは深い地の中から物言い」、「あなたの言葉はちりの中から、さえずるようである」と述べています。

Several hundred years later, the prophet Nephi was directed by the Spirit of the Lord to include this chapter from Isaiah in the records Nephi engraved on the plates (see 2 Nephi 27).

数百年後，預言者ニーファイは主の御霊によって版に刻まれたニーファイの記録に、イザヤ書のこの章を含めるように命じられました（2 ニーファイ 27 章参照）。

The fulfillment of this prophecy of Isaiah happened in February 1828.  

このイザヤの預言の成就は、1828年2月に起こりました。

Martin Harris had been serving as a scribe to the Prophet Joseph Smith during the translation of the Book of Mormon.  Martin Harris decided to take a small sample of the characters from the plates, and the translation of those characters, to show to some learned men.  

マーティン・ハリスは、モルモン書の翻訳中、預言者ジョセフ・スミスの書記を務めていました。マーティン・ハリスは、版から文字の少しのサンプルとそれらの文字の翻訳を手に携え、何人かの学者に見せに行きました。

In February of 1828, Martin Harris visited several leading scholars, including Professor Charles Anthon, a professor at Columbia University.

1828年2月、マーティン・ハリスは、コロンビア大学の教授であるチャールズ・アンソン教授を含む数人の著名な学者を訪れました。

When he showed the sample of the characters and the translation to Professor Anthon, Professor Anthon said the translation was the most accurate and correct that he had ever seen.  He asked Martin Harris to bring the plates to him and he would translate them.  Martin Harris told Professor Anthon that he could not bring the plates, since they were sealed.  Professor Anthon then replied, “I cannot read a sealed book”.

Joseph Smith had very little formal education.  As a poor farm boy, he did not have the opportunity to attend school very often.  Yet, this uneducated farm boy was able to translate the plates. 

ジョセフ・スミスは正式な教育をほとんど受けていませんでした。貧しい農家の少年で、学校に通う機会があまりありませんでした。それでも、この無学な農家の少年は版を翻訳することができました。

How is this possible?

どうしてそれが可能だったのでしょう？

It is only possible though the power of God.  Joseph could not even write a grammatically correct one page letter, his wife Emma reported.  There is no way that he could have written the Book of Mormon on his own.  He translated the Book of Mormon through the gift and power of God.

それは神の力によってのみ可能でした。妻のエマによると、ジョセフは文法的に正しい手紙１ページすら書くことができませんでした。彼がひとりでモルモン書を書くことはできなかったでしょう。彼は神の賜物と力によってモルモン書を翻訳しました。

Thus, while the “learned” could not translate the plates, the “unlearned”, by the gift and power of God, was able to translate them correctly.

このように、「学識のある」人が版を翻訳できませんでしたが、「学識のない」人が神の賜物と力によって正しく翻訳することができたのです。

Thus, some three thousand years after the prophet Isaiah lived on the earth, his prophecy was fulfilled.  

このように、預言者イザヤが地上に住んでいた時期から約3,000年後に、彼の預言は成就しました。

It is a great testimony to us that the Lord is in charge.  He reveals to his prophets the things that we need to know.  The Lord called the prophet Isaiah, just as he called the Prophet Joseph Smith.  The gospel is the same today as it was in the days of Isaiah.  

主が責任を負っておられることは、私たちにとって大きな証です。私たちが知る必要があることを主は預言者に明らかにされます。預言者ジョセフ・スミスを召されたように、預言者イザヤも召されました。今日の福音は、イザヤの時代と同じです。

Just like the people in the days of Isaiah, or the people in the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith, we have a living prophet of God to teach us and to lead us.

イザヤの時代の人々や預言者ジョセフ・スミスの時代の人々と同じように、現在も神の生ける預言者が私たちを教え、導いてくださっています。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember that the gospel is eternal.  Let’s remember that the Lord calls prophets in every dispensation to teach his commandments to the people.  Let’s remember the prophecies of Isaiah about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.  Let’s be diligent in our daily study of the Book of Mormon.
