And I sent messengers unto them saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you. Nehemiah 6:3
The books of Ezra and Nehemiah tell the story of the children of Israel returning from the Babylonian captivity. Cyrus, king of Persia, had conquered and destroyed Babylon. He issued a decree that the children of Israel should return to Jerusalem and build a temple there.

Cyrus returned the golden vessels of the temple that had been taken from the temple when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem. He also instructed his scribes to provide Israel with gold and with silver and with lumber so they could build the temple again.

As soon as the enemies of Israel heard that the temple was going to be re-built, they were angry. They sent letters to the king, telling him that Israel was always rebellious and that Israel did not follow the laws of the king. They said that because of this, the king should demand that the work on the temple be stopped.

Nehemiah set guards around the temple lot, to protect the workers who were building the temple. He also told each worker to have a sword with him, in case the enemies of the temple attacked them. They worked on the temple day and night, trying to finish it as soon as possible.

The enemies of Nehemiah sent him a letter, asking him to come out of the city, into the open plains, and meet them there. Nehemiah knew that this was a plan to kill him and to stop the work of the temple. He refused to leave the temple work, telling his enemies that he was engaged in a great work and did not have time to stop.

Substitute the name of Joseph Smith or Brigham Young for Nehemiah, and substitute Nauvoo for Jerusalem. This is almost exactly what happened to us as we worked to build the temple in Nauvoo. Brigham Young later said that the workers worked with a hammer or trowel in one hand and a sword in the other hand.

Like Nehemiah, both the Prophet Joseph Smith and Brigham Young understood that the most important “great work” they had was to build the temple. Even in our day, opposition arises almost every time a new temple is announced,. Satan does everything he can to stop the work of the temple. He knows how important it is and does all that he can to prevent us from receiving the blessings of the temple.

We, too, are doing a “great work” and cannot come down. We have many opportunities to attend the temple. We have many opportunities to do family history research and to find our own ancestors. We have many opportunities to receive all the blessings of the temple, both for ourselves and for our ancestors.

Are we participating in this “great work”? Are we doing our best to attend the temple when our circumstances allow? Are we seeking out those who need the eternal blessings of the temple?

There will always be opposition to the work of the temple. Satan will do everything that he can to stop this work, to make it difficult for us, to make us forget how important it is.

As we go through this next week, let’s remember that we are doing a “great work”. Let’s remember the struggles of those people in past times who have worked hard to build a temple. Let’s do all that we can do to serve the Lord in the temple and to bring the blessings of eternity to our ancestors.
