And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? How much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? 2 Kings 5:13
This week, we study another of the great stories from the Old Testament. This is a very simple story, but one that has an important message for each of us.
今週は、旧約聖書からもう一つのすばらしい物語を学びます。これはとても簡単な話ですが、私たちにとって大切なメッセージになります。
Naaman was the leader of the Syrian army. He was a very important man. Sadly, he contracted leprosy. In those days, leprosy was a death sentence. There was no cure.
ナアマンはスリヤ軍の指導者でした。彼はとても重要な人物でした。悲しいことに、彼はらい病をわずらっていました。当時、らい病の治療法は無く、死刑宣告と同じでした。
Naaman’s wife had a servant girl from Israel. This young girl had been taught that there was a prophet in Israel. She told Naaman’s wife that it was too bad that Naaman wasn’t in Israel, because the prophet would be able to cure him of his leprosy.
ナアマンの妻にはイスラエル人の使用人の少女がいました。彼女は、イスラエルには預言者がいると教えられていました。彼女は、イスラエルにいたならば、預言者がらい病を治すことができたのに残念ですとナアマンの妻に言いました。
When Naaman heard this, he decided to go to Israel and see the prophet. This shows just how serious and scary leprosy was. Here we see the 2nd most powerful man in Syria, a man who had command of the entire army, following the instructions of a mere servant girl.
ナアマンはこれを聞き、イスラエルに行って預言者に会うことにしました。このことから当時、らい病がどれほど深刻で恐ろしいものであったかを示しています。スリヤで軍全体を指揮する二番目に力のある男が、単なる使用人の少女の指示に従ったのです。
When Naaman came to Israel, Elisha the prophet did not even meet with him. Instead, Elisha sent his servant to Naaman, with a message telling him to bathe 7 times in the river Jordan. If he did that, he would be cured of his leprosy.
ナアマンがイスラエルに来たとき、預言者エリシャは彼に会うことさえしませんでした。代わりに、エリシャは僕をナアマンに送り、ヨルダン川で７たび身を洗うようにとのメッセージを伝えました。もしそうすれば、らい病は治るでしょうと。
Naaman became very angry. He was angry that Elisha would not meet with him. He was angry that he was told to do something so simple. He was angry that Elisha told him to bathe in the river Jordan, not in one of the rivers of Syria.
ナアマンはとても腹を立てました。エリシャが彼に会わないことに腹を立てました。あまりにも簡単なことをするように言われたことに腹を立てました。エリシャがスリヤの川ではなく、ヨルダン川で身を洗うように言ったことに腹を立てました。
Luckily for Naaman, his own servant asked him a simple question. “If the prophet had asked you do to some great task, would you not do it? This is a very simple thing. Maybe you should do it.”
幸いなことに、ナアマンの僕が彼に簡単な質問をしました。「預言者があなたに、何か大きなことをせよと命じても、あなたはそれをなさらなかったでしょうか？これは非常に簡単なことなので、それをすべきではないでしょうか。」
Naaman repented and decided to follow the instructions of the prophet. He went down into the river Jordan 7 times. He was healed of his leprosy by his obedience to the words of the prophet.
ナアマンは悔い改め、預言者の指示に従うことにしました。彼はヨルダン川に７回入りました。預言者の言葉に従順であったことでらい病は癒されました。
Are we sometimes like Naaman? Do we reject the words of the prophet because he asks us to do simple things? Are we like Naaman, expecting the prophet to tell us to so something great and then becoming angry because we are given just a simple task?
私たちも時々ナアマンのようではありませんか？預言者が私たちに簡単なことをするように言われるとき、預言者の言葉を拒んでいませんか？私たちはナアマンのように、預言者が何か素晴らしいことを教えてくれると期待し、簡単な務めしか与えられていないことに腹を立てていませんか？
The prophet has told us to hold weekly Family Home Evening. Is that too simple for us?
預言者は毎週、家庭の夕べを開くよう私たちに言いました。それは私たちには簡単すぎますか？
The prophet has told us to study the “Come, Follow Me” lessons. Is that too simple for us?
預言者は「わたしに従ってきなさい」を学ぶように言いました。それは私たちには簡単すぎますか？
The prophet has told us to attend our weekly sacrament meetings. Is that too simple for us?
預言者は毎週、聖餐会に出席するように言いました。それは私たちには簡単すぎますか？
The prophet has told us to read from the Book of Mormon every day. Is that too simple for us?
預言者はモルモン書を毎日読むように言いました。それは私たちには簡単すぎますか？
The prophet has told us to pray every day. Is that too simple for us?
預言者は毎日祈るように言いました。それは私たちには簡単すぎますか？
As we go through this next week, let’s remember the example of Naaman. Let’s remember that the prophet speaks for the Lord and teaches us what the Lord wants us to do. Let’s remember that keeping the commandments is the most important task. Let’s remember the great blessings that came to Naaman as he followed the counsel of the prophet.
新しい週が始まります。ナアマンのたとえを考えながら過ごしませんか。預言者が主の代わりに語り、主が私たちに望んでおられることを教えてくださることを忘れないでください。戒めを守ることが最も重要な務めであることを忘れないでください。ナアマンが預言者の勧告に従ったときにもたらされた大きな祝福を心に思い起こしてみましょう。
