そのとき主の火が下って燔祭と、たきぎと、石と、ちりとを焼きつくし、またみぞの水をなめつくした。民は皆見て、ひれ伏して言った、「主は神である。主は神である」。列王記上１８:３８−３９

Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.  And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; The Lord, he is the God. 1 Kings 18:38-39

This week, we will study another of the great stories from the Old Testament.  

今週は、旧約聖書からもう一つのすばらしい物語を学びます。

Ahab, king of Israel, had become wicked.  He married Jezabel, who was not from Israel and who made the people worship Baal.  Jezabel killed all the prophets of the Lord in Israel and appointed 450 prophets for Baal.  

イスラエルの王アハブは邪悪になりました。彼は、人々にバアルを崇拝させたイスラエル出身ではないイゼベルと結婚しました。イゼベルはイスラエルで主のすべての預言者を殺し、バアルのために450人の預言者を任命しました。

After a long time, Elijah was told to go and meet Ahab.  He was to tell Ahab about all the wicked things he had done, particularly with allowing the worship of Baal in Israel.

長い年月が経ちました。エリヤはアハブに会いに行くように言われました。アハブのすべての邪悪な行いについて、特にイスラエルでバアルを崇拝することを許したことについて話すようにと。

Elijah told Ahab to gather together all the people.  When they were all gathered, Elijah told them that the time had come for them to choose between the Lord and Baal.  

エリヤはアハブにすべての人を集めるように言いました。全員が集まったとき、エリヤは彼らに主とバアルのどちらかを選ぶ時が来たと言いました。

He told the priests of Baal to build an altar, put wood on it, and then to put the sacrifice on top of the wood.  But they were not to put any fire there.  The priests of Baal were then to call on Baal to send down fire to light the sacrifice.  Elijah said he would do the same thing.

彼はバアルの祭司たちに祭壇を建て、そこにたきぎを置き、その上に供え物を載せるように言いました。しかし、彼らはそこに火を付けませんでした。それからバアルの祭司たちは、供え物に火をつけるために火を持ってくるようにとバアルに要求しました。彼も同じことをするだろうとエリヤは言いました。

The priest of Baal did all that and prayed to Baal for many hours.  Nothing happened.  They began to jump up on the altar and to cut themselves, trying to get an answer from Baal.  Nothing happened.  

バアルの祭司はそれらすべて行い、何時間もバアルに祈りました。でも、何も起こりませんでした。彼らは祭壇に飛び乗って自分たちを切って傷つけ始め、バアルから答えを得ようとしました。でも、何も起こりませんでした。

Finally, as evening approached, Elijah built an altar for his sacrifice, put wood on it and put the sacrifice on top of the wood.  He dug a trench around the bottom of the altar.  He then asked the people to fill four barrels with water and to pour the water over the sacrifice.  Then again, a second time.  Then again, a third time.  By that time, the wood on the altar was completely soaked with water and the trench at the bottom of the altar was full of water.  

結局、夕方が近づくとエリヤは犠牲のために祭壇を築き、そこにたきぎを置き、その上に供え物を載せました。彼は祭壇の周囲に溝を掘りました。それから彼は人々に四つのかめに水を満たし、そして供え物の上に水を注ぐように言いました。それを、繰り返し三度するように言いました。その時、祭壇のたきぎは完全に水に浸され、祭壇の溝は水で満たされました。

Elijah then prayed to the Lord to send down fire to burn the sacrifice.  As recorded in this scripture, the fire of the Lord fell on the sacrifice and burned up not only the sacrifice, but the wood, the stones, the dust, and all the water that was in the trench.

それからエリヤは供え物を燃やすために火を送ってくださるよう主に祈りました。この聖句に記録されているように、主の火は燔祭に降りかかり、燔祭だけでなく、たきぎ、石、ちり、そして溝にあったすべての水を焼きつくしました。

While it is unlikely that we will experience such a miracle in our own lives as this, reading about these great events reminds of that the Lord is all-powerful.  It teaches us that no matter how popular some group or some false teaching may be, it will not last.  

私たちがこのような奇跡を生活の中で経験することはなさそうですが、これらのすばらしい出来事について読むことは、主が全能であることを思い起こさせます。それは、あるグループや誤った教えがどれほど人気があっても、それは長くは続かないことを私たちに教えています。

The scriptures, and our own history of the Church in this dispensation, are full of similar miracles.  Some examples might be the freezing of the Mississippi river in February so the saints could escape from Nauvoo, the arrival of the seagulls which ate the crickets and saved the crops, the protection the saints received when the United States army came to attack them in Utah, and many other events.

聖書と、この神権時代における教会の歴史は、同じような奇跡に満ちています。たとえば、聖徒が２月にミシシッピ川が凍りノーブーから逃げることを可能にしたこと、また、カモメがやってきてバッタを食べたことで作物を救ったこと、米国軍がユタで聖徒を攻撃しようとしたときに聖徒が守られたこと、他にも多くの奇跡があります。

This is the work of the Lord.  He is in control.  Just as President Nelson reminded us in this last General Conference, we should look for and expect miracles in our own lives.  As we keep the commandments, as we pray, as we study the scriptures, and as we serve others, we are promised those miracles in the due time of the Lord.

これは主の業です。主はすべてを管理、支配しておられます。ネルソン大管長がこの総大会の最後で私たちに思い起こさせたように、私たちは自分たちの生活の中で奇跡を求め、希望を持たねばなりません。私たちが戒めを守り、祈り、聖文を研究し、他の人に仕えるとき、主の時に奇跡が与えられると約束されています。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the great miracles and events recorded in the Old Testament.  Let’s remember that the Lord is “the same, yesterday, today, and forever”.  Let’s look for and expect miracles in our own lives, as we keep the commandments.  

新しい週が始まります。旧約聖書に記録されたすばらしい奇跡と出来事を覚えて過ごしましょう。主は「昨日も、今日も、そして永遠に同じ」であることを忘れないでください。戒めを守りながら、生活の中で希望を持って奇跡を待ち望みましょう。
