サムエルは言った、「主はそのみ言葉に聞き従う事を喜ばれるように、潘際や犠牲を喜ばれるであろか。みよ、従うことは犠牲にまさり、聞くことは雄羊の脂肪にまさる。そむくことは占いの罪に等しく、強情は偶像礼拝の罪に等しいからである。あなたが主のことばを捨てたので、主もまたあなたを捨てて、王の位から退けられた」。

サムエル記上１５:２２−２３

And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.  For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.  Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

1 Samuel 15:22-23

As we continue our study of the Old Testament, we come to yet another time when Israel rejected the Lord.  This seems to be the main theme of the Old Testament.  Time after time, we find the Lord trying to bless Israel, but Israel rejecting the counsel of the Lord.

旧約聖書を学んでいると、イスラエルが主を拒んだ話をたびたび目にします。それは旧約聖書で繰り返し教えられる教訓のようです。主が幾度もイスラエルを祝福しようとされているのに、イスラエルは主の勧告を拒み続けるのです。

In the days of Samuel, judges ruled the country.  This was just like the system that king Mosiah established for the Nephites.  But Israel didn’t like that system.  They saw that all the other tribes and peoples around them had a king.  Israel wanted to have a king, too.

サムエルの時代、士師（裁判官）が国を統治していました。これは、モーサヤ王がニーファイ人のために制定した制度のようでした。しかし、イスラエルはその制度が好きではありませんでした。彼らは他のすべての部族や周りの民が王を持っているのを見て、彼らも王が欲しかったのです。

The prophet Samuel told the people of Israel that having a king was not good.  He explained to them how they would suffer if they had a king instead of judges.  Still, the people demanded a king.  Samuel sought guidance from the Lord.  The Lord told Samuel that, by wanting a king, the people had rejected him again.  The Lord said to let them have a king.  

預言者サムエルはイスラエルの民に王を持つことは良くないと言いました。彼は士師の代わりに王がいたらどのように苦しむかを説明しました。それでも、彼らは王を要求しました。サムエルは主に導きを求め、主はサムエルに言われました。彼らが王を求めたことで、再び主を拒んだのだと。主は彼らに王を持たせました。

The Lord called Saul to be the king of Israel.  Samuel found Saul and anointed him as the king.  For a few years, Saul did a good job.  But sometimes, Saul had a hard time following the instructions of the Lord.

主はサウルをイスラエルの王に召されました。サムエルはサウルを王として彼に油を注ぎました。数年の間、サウルは良い働きをしました。しかし、彼は主の勧告に従わないことが時折ありました。

Saul was commanded to go to war against the Amalekites and to completely destroy them, every person, and every animal.  No one was to be left alive.  Saul failed in this assignment.  Instead of killing everyone, he made a treaty with one group of people.  Instead of killing all the animals, he kept them and brought them back to Israel.

サウルはアマレクびととの戦いに行き、すべての人、すべての動物を滅ぼし尽くすように命じられました。サウルのその任務は失敗しました。彼は全員を殺す代わりに、ひとつのグループと条約を結びました。すべての動物を殺す代わりに、生かしてイスラエルに連れて帰りました。

When Samuel came, he saw what Saul had done.  He chastised Saul for his disobedience.  Saul tried to rationalize his sin by claiming that the animals were for sacrifice. Samuel rejected that excuse and told Saul very plainly that obedience is better than sacrifice.

サムエルが来て、サウルがしたことを知りました。彼は不従順だったことでサウルを非難しました。サウルは動物はいけにえのためだと主張し、罪を正当化しようとしました。サムエルはその言い訳を拒否し、サウルに従順は犠牲よりも優れていると明言しました。

So it is with us.  

私たちも同じですね。

Do we rationalize our behavior by thinking it is okay to bend the rules if there is a good result?  Do we ignore some of the commandments that we don’t think are necessary?  Do we pick and choose which commandments to obey?

結果がよければルールを曲げても大丈夫だと考え、行動を正当化しますか？必要ないと思われる戒めを無視しますか？戒めを選んで従いますか？

Are we like Saul, obeying only the commandments that we like?  Are we like Saul, ignoring the instructions of the prophet when he asks us to do something different than what we want to do?  Are we like Saul, thinking we can hide our actions from the Lord?

私たちはサウルのように好きな戒めだけに従いますか？サウルのように、自分が気が進まないことを預言者が私たちに求めるとき、その勧告を無視していますか？私たちはサウルのように自分の行動を主から隠すことができると考えますか？

As we study these stories from the Old Testament, we can see clearly what happens when people, kings, or even nations do not keep the commandments.  The Lord wants to bless us.  He wants us to be happy.  He wants us to be safe.

旧約聖書からこれらの物語を学ぶとき、民や王、あるいは国家でさえも戒めを守らなかった結果、何が起こるかをはっきりと知ることができます。主は私たちを祝福したいと願っておられます。私たちが幸せになることを望んでおられます。主は私たちが安全であることを望んでおられます。

But the Lord can only bless us if we do our part.  If we want the promised blessings, we must keep the commandments associated with those blessings.  It is all our own choice.

しかし、主は私たちが自分の役割を果たす場合にのみ私たちを祝福することができます。約束された祝福が必要な場合は、それらの祝福に付随する戒めを守らなければなりません。それはすべて私たちの選択です。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the sad story of Saul.  Let’s remember the great blessings that he could have had, if he had been obedient.  Let’s remember that the Lord values obedience about everything else.  Let’s stop rationalizing our behavior or making excuses about why we don’t keep the commandments.  Let’s listen to the counsel of the Lord as it comes through his prophet and then follow that counsel with exactness.

新しい週がはじまり、サウルの哀れな話を心に留めて過ごしましょう。彼が従順だったとしたら、得られた大きな祝福を考えてみましょう。主は、すべてについて従順を重んじることを忘れないでください。私たちの行動を正当化したり、戒めを守らない言い訳をしたりするのはやめましょう。主の預言者を通して受ける主の勧告に耳を傾け、その勧告に正しく従っていきましょう。
