And when he had come unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightly upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.  And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.  And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.  And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-Lehi.  Judges 15:14-17

The book of Judges tells the sad story of the constant disobedience of the children of Israel.  Just as they had done under the leadership of Moses, they continued to rebel against the Lord when Joshua became their leader.

士師記には、繰り返される不従順さによる哀れなイスラエルの民の話しが記録されています。モーセの指揮下にあった時と同じく、ヨシュアが指導者になったときも、彼らは主に反抗し続けました。

The Lord told them to destroy all of the people who were living in the land that had been promised to Israel.  They did not do that.

主は、イスラエルに約束された土地に住んでいたすべての人々を滅ぼすように言われました。しかし、彼らはそうしませんでした。

The Lord told them not to make any treaties with those people.  They made many treaties.

主は約束された土地に住む人々といかなる条約も結ばないように言われました。しかし、彼らは多くの条約を結びました。

The Lord told them not to let their children marry with those people.  Their children still married people who were not of Israel.

主は子供たちを彼らと結婚させないように言われました。しかし、彼らの子供たちはイスラエル人ではない人々と結婚していました。

The Lord told them to destroy all of the idols and the altars of the idols.  Instead, the children of Israel started worshiping those idols.

主は彼らにすべての偶像と偶像の祭壇を破壊するように言われました。しかし、イスラエルの民はそれらの偶像を崇拝し始めました。

Because of their constant disobedience, the Lord withheld many blessings from them.  The Lord did not help them win battles in war. Many kings came to battle with Israel and conquered them.  The children of Israel were again in bondage to foreign nations.

彼らの繰り返される不従順のために、主は彼らから多くの祝福を取り去られました。主は彼らが戦いで勝利するのを助けられませんでした。イスラエルは多くの王から攻められ征服されました。イスラエルの民は再び他の国の囚われの人となりました。

As we read these chapters, we need to remember why all these bad things happened to them.  We need to remember that the Lord will bless us only if we keep his commandments.

この章から、なぜこのような悪いことが起こったのか、私たちは覚えておく必要があります。私たちが主の戒めを守る場合にのみ主は祝福してくださることを覚えておく必要があります。

One interesting thing in the book of Judges relates to the Book of Mormon.  Some critics of the Book of Mormon have argued that there is no reference in the Bible to any of the names that we find in the Book of Mormon.  However, there is one important reference in the story of Samson.

士師記の興味深い点は、モルモン書と関係があるということです。モルモン書を批評する人の中には、モルモン書に出てくる名前はどれも聖書には関連がないと主張しています。しかし、サムソンの話には重要な関連資料があります。

In the 15th chapter of Judges, Samson kills a thousand enemy soldiers using the jawbone of a donkey as his weapon.  He calls the place where this battle took place “Lehi”, which means “jawbone”.

士師記の第15章で、サムソンはろばのあご骨を武器として千人の敵兵を殺しています。彼はこの戦いが起こった場所を「あご骨」を意味する「リヒ」と呼んでいます。（英語では聖書もモルモン書も Lehi 「リーハイ」という同じスペルで書かれています）

Archeologists exploring the ruins in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico found a very large stone, more than one meter tall, with strange carvings.  As they studied the carvings, they came to believe that the picture represented the Tree of Life vision of Lehi.  They based this on the fact that the main character in the picture had a jawbone carved above his head, as if saying, “this is Lehi”.

メキシコのユカタン半島の遺跡を探索している考古学者は、奇妙な彫刻が施された、高さ1メートルを超える非常に大きな石を発見しました。彼らが彫刻を研究するにつれて、その絵がリーハイの生命の木のビジョンを表していると信じるようになりました。 これは、絵の中の人物が「これはリーハイだ」と言っているかのように、頭上にあご骨が刻まれていることに基づいています。

As we go through this coming week, let’s take time to think about the disobedience of the children of Israel and all the trials and sufferings that resulted.  Let’s remember that the Lord can only give us the promised blessings if we do our part and keep the commandments.  Let’s remember the covenants that each of us has made with the Lord.  Let’s do our best to stay on the covenant path always.
