そこで主はモーセに言われた。「火のへびを造って、それをさおの上に掛けなさい。全てのかまれた者が仰いで、それを見るならば生きるであろう」。モーセは青銅でーつのへびを造り、それをさおの上に掛けて置いた。すべてへびにかまれた者はその青銅のへびを仰いで見て生きた。民数記２１：８−９

And the Lord said unto Moses, Make a fiery serpent and put it upon a pole: and is shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.  And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.  Numbers 21:8-9

This is another one of the great stories from the Old Testament.  It must have been a well-known story even anciently, since was referred to by Nephi, Alma, and other Book of Mormon prophets (1 Nephi 17:41, Alma 33:19-21).  

これもまた旧約聖書のすばらしい物語のひとつです。ニーファイ、アルマ、および他のモルモン書の預言者も語っているように、古くからよく知られた物語であったに違いありません（1ニーファイ17:41、アルマ33：19-21）。

It is a story that we often read and think, “how could those people have been so foolish?”.  With no medical attention available, being bitten by a poisonous snake was almost always fatal.  It would have been so easy to look and be healed.  

それを読むとき「彼らはどうしてそんなに愚かだったのか」と考えてしまいます。医師による治療がなかったその頃は、毒ヘビに噛まれることは、ほとんどの場合致命的でした。見ることで癒されるという行為はとても簡単だったはずです。

But let’s back up a step.  Why were there serpents there in the first place?  They were sent there by the Lord.  The children of Israel seemed to never understand the great blessings the Lord had for them.  They constantly complained to Moses, saying that it would have been better for them to have remained in Egypt.  

しかし、一歩戻って考えてみましょう。そもそも、なぜ蛇がいたのでしょう？彼らは主によってその場所に導かれました。イスラエルの民は、主が与えられた大きな祝福を全く理解していなかったようです。彼らは絶えずモーセに不平を言い、エジプトに留まっていればもっと良かったと苦情を言いました。

Because of their disobedience, the Lord sent various plagues to chasten the people.  One of those plagues was poisonous snakes.  At the same time, the Lord also prepared a way for the people to be healed.  The Lord commanded Moses to make a brass snake and to put it up on a pole.  If someone was bitten by a snake, all they had to do was to look at the brass snake and they would be healed.  As easy as that was, we read that there were many who would not look.  Those who would not look died.

彼らの不従順のゆえに、主は人々を叱責するために様々な災いを送られました。災いのひとつは毒ヘビでした。同時に、主は人々が癒される方法も用意されました。主はモーセに青銅の蛇を作り、それをさおの上にかけるように命じられました。誰かがヘビに噛まれ時、ただ青銅のヘビを見るだけで癒されたのです。簡単な事だったのに、見ない人が多かったと書かれています。見ようとしない人は死にました。

We think, how foolish they were.  Not like us.  If we had been there, we would have looked.  

私たちは彼らがいかに愚かだったかと考えます。私たちがそこにいたら、彼らとは違って、きっと見たことでしょう。

Yet, in our own time, there are many “poisonous snakes” in the world.  The Lord has prepared a way for us to be healed from any “poisonous snake”.  

しかし、今の時代にも、多くの「毒ヘビ」がいます。主は私たちがどんな「毒ヘビ」からも癒される方法を用意してくださいました。

The image of the brass snake on a pole in some ways is symbolic of the Savior’s sacrifice on the cross.  And, just as the children of Israel could look at the brass snake and be healed, we can look to our Savior, Jesus Christ, and be healed.  

さおの上に青銅の蛇が描かれているイメージは、ある意味で十字架での救い主の犠牲を象徴しています。そして、イスラエルの民が青銅の蛇を見て癒されるのと同じように、私たちは救い主であるイエス・キリストに目を向けることで、癒されるのです。

We have been given the Family Home Evening program.  Do we look and live? 

私たちは家庭の夕べというプログラムを与えられました。「仰ぎ見て生き」ますか？

We have been given the Come, Follow Me program.  Do we look and live?

私たちはわたしに従ってきなさいというプログラムを与えられました。「仰ぎ見て生き」ますか？

We have been given prophets and apostles to teach us.  Do we look and live?

私たちを教えるために預言者と使徒が与えられました。「仰ぎ見て生き」ますか？

We have been given temples to bless our lives and the lives of our ancestors.  Do we look and live?

私たちと先祖の生活を祝福するために神殿が与えられました。「仰ぎ見て生き」ますか？

Do we look to the small and simple things the Lord has given to us so we can be healed from the bite of spiritual poisonous serpents?  Are we willing to do the things the Lord has commanded us to do?  Or will our posterity look back on us and think we were just as foolish as the children of Israel?

主が私たちに与えてくださった小さくて簡単なものに目を向けて、霊的な毒ヘビから癒されていますか？主が私たちに命じられたことを喜んで行っていますか？それとも、私たちの子孫は、私たちを振り返りイスラエルの民と同じように愚かだったと思いますか？

As we go through this week, let’s think about the example of the children of Israel.  Let’s resolve to be more obedient than they were.  Let’s resolve to always look to Jesus Christ to be healed from our troubles and trials.  Let’s do our best to keep the commandments.

新しい週が始まります。イスラエルの民のたとえについて考えてみましょう。彼らよりも従順になることを決意しましょう。私たちの悩みや試練から癒されるために、常にイエス・キリストに目を向けることを決意しましょう。 戒めを守るよう最善を尽くしてください。
