モーセが手を海の上にさし伸べたので、主は夜もすがら強い東風を持って海を退かせ、海を陸地とされ、水は分かれた。イスラエルの人々は海の中のかわいた地を行ったが、水は彼らの右と左に、かきとなった。出エジプト１４:２１−２２

And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.  And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand and on their left.  Exodus 14:21-22

This week, we will study another one of the great events from the Old Testament.  After the children of Israel left Egypt, they traveled for several days in the wilderness.  Soon after they left Egypt, Pharaoh and the Egyptians decided they had made a mistake in letting the Israelites leave.  

今週は、旧約聖書からもう一つのすばらしい出来事を学びます。イスラエルの民はエジプトを去った後、荒野を数日間旅しました。彼らがエジプトを去った直後、パロとエジプト人はイスラエル人を解放したことが間違いだったと気付きました。

Pharaoh sent his armies after the Israelites, to capture them and to bring them back to Egypt.  When the Israelites saw the Egyptians coming after them, they were very frightened.  They had no army to protect them.  They had no place to escape to, since they were camped near the Red Sea. It seemed like they were going to be captured and punished by the Egyptians.

パロはイスラエル人を捕らえてエジプトに連れ戻すよう軍隊を送りました。イスラエル人はエジプト人が追ってくるのを見たとき、非常に恐れました。彼らには守ってくれる軍隊がありませんでした。また、紅海の近くで宿営していたので逃げ場がありませんでした。彼らはエジプト人に捕らえられ、罰を受けると恐れていました。

They complained much to Moses, saying that it would have been better for them to have stayed in Egypt.  Now, they thought, they were all going to be captured and killed.  There did not seem to be any way for them to escape.

彼らはエジプトにとどまっていたほうがよかったとモーセに不満を言ったのです。彼らは全員捕まって殺されるだろうと思いました。逃げる手立てが無いように思えました。

Moses told them to trust in the Lord.  The Lord instructed Moses to “lift up thou thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry land through the midst of the sea” (verse 16).  

モーセは彼らに主を信頼するように言いました。主はモーセに「あなたはつえを上げ、手を海の上にさし伸べてそれを分け、イスラエルの人々は海の中のかわいた地を行かせなさい」（16節）と命じられました。

Moses followed the counsel of the Lord.  He stretched out his hand and the waters of the Red Sea parted.  It was a great miracle.  There was no way that the children of Israel could fight against the Egyptians.  There was no place for them to go where they would be safe.  It was only by this great miracle that they were saved.

モーセは主の勧告に従いました。手をさし伸べ、紅海の海は別れました。それは大きな奇跡でした。イスラエルの民がエジプト人と戦う手段はありませんでした。彼らが行ける安全な場所はありませんでした。この大きな奇跡が無ければ彼らは救われなかったのです。

The children of Israel crossed over the Red Sea on dry ground.  They were all able to escape from the Egyptians.  

イスラエルの民は、紅海のかわいた地を渡りました。彼らは全員、エジプト人から逃れることができました。

But they saw the Egyptians were still following them.  The Egyptian army was crossing over the Red Sea, too.  Then a second miracle happened.  The Lord told Moses to stretch out his hand again, to close up the waters of the Red Sea.  Moses did this, and the water came back.  All of the Egyptians were drowned and the children of Israel were saved.

しかし、エジプト人がまだ彼らを追って来ていました。エジプト軍も紅海を渡っていました。そしてふたつ目の奇跡が起こりました。主はモーセに、紅海の水を閉じるために、もう一度手をさし伸べるように言われました。モーセがそうすると水は戻ってきました。すべてのエジプト人は溺死し、イスラエルの民たちは救われたのです。

The most important teaching in this is that the Lord is all-powerful.  The Lord can do things that seem impossible to us.  The Lord has always and will always protect his righteous children.  

ここで最も重要な教えは、主が全能のお方であるということです。主は私たちには不可能と思うことでも行うことができるのです。主は常に、そしてこれからも義にかなった神の子供たちを守ってくださいます。

There may be times in our own lives when we are figuratively being chased by the armies of Egypt.  There may be times when we feel we are trapped against the Red Sea.  There may be times when we feel there is no hope of safety.

私たちは毎日の生活の中で、比喩的にエジプトの軍隊に追われている時があるかもしれません。紅海が行く手を塞いでいると感じることがあるかもしれません。安全への希望がないと感じることもあるかもしれません。

When those trials come, we need to remember the example of Moses.  We need to remember that the Lord can do anything.  We need to remember that the Lord is always ready to help us.  We need to have faith and put our trust in the Lord.  In his own due time and in his own way, he will always bless us and protect us.

そうした試練が来るとき、私たちはモーセの模範を覚えておく必要があります。主は何でもできるということを覚えておく必要があります。主はいつでも私たちを助ける準備ができていることを覚えておく必要があります。私たちは信仰を持ち、主に信頼を置く必要があります。主はご自身の時に、そしてご自身の方法で、いつも私たちを祝福し、守ってくださいます。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the great events that we read about in the Old Testament.  Let’s remember the great things the Lord did for Israel.  Let’s remember the great faith of Moses and his willingness to follow the instructions of the Lord.  Let’s have faith that the Lord will protect us from our own “armies of Egypt”.
