主が行き巡ってエジプトびとを撃たれるとき、かもいと入口の二つの柱にある血を見みて、主はその入口を過ぎ越し、滅ぼす者が、あなたがたの家にはいって、撃つのを許されないであろう。あなたがたはこの事を、あなたと子孫のための定めとして、永久に守らなければならない。出エジプト記 12:23-24

And the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.  And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and thy sons forever.  Exodus 12:23-24

This week, we read another of the great stories from the Old Testament.  We read about the assignment given to Moses to free the children of Israel, about the stubbornness of Pharaoh, and about the plagues that the Lord sent to the Egyptians.

今週、私たちは旧約聖書からもうひとつのすばらしい物語を学びます。イスラエルの民を解放するためにモーセに与えられた任務、パロの頑固さ、そして主がエジプト人に送られた災いについて学びます。

The Lord told Moses to go to Pharaoh and to ask him to allow the Israelites to leave Egypt.  But Pharaoh did not want to do that.  There were, according to the scriptures, more than 600,000 Israelites in Egypt.  They were slaves to the Egyptians.  Neither Pharaoh nor the Egyptian people wanted to lose their slaves.

主はモーセに、パロのところに行き、イスラエル人がエジプトを去ることを許すようにと言われました。しかし、パロはそうしたくありませんでした。聖書によれば、エジプトには60万人以上のイスラエル人がいました。彼らはエジプト人の奴隷でした。パロもエジプト人も奴隷を失いたくありませんでした。

Moses went to Pharaoh many times, telling him that the Lord wanted the Israelites to be freed.  Moses warned Pharaoh that plagues would come if he did not let the people go free.  Each time, Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites leave Egypt.

モーセは何度もパロのところに行き、主がイスラエル人を解放することを望んでおられることを告げました。モーセはパロに、人々を自由にしなければ災いが来るだろうと警告しました。毎回、パロはイスラエル人をエジプトから去らせることを拒否しました。

Because of Pharaoh’s refusals, the Lord sent plagues.  First, the water in all the rivers in Egypt was turned to blood.  Next, there was a plague of frogs.  Then plagues of lice, swarms of flies, dead cattle, skin boils, hail, and darkness.  After each plague, Pharaoh was given an opportunity to repent and to let the Israelites leave.  Each time, Pharaoh refused.

パロの拒絶のために、主は災いを送られました。まず、エジプトのすべての川の水が血に変わりました。次に、カエルが放たれました。その後、ヨブとアブの群れ、死んだ牛、皮膚病、雹、そして暗闇がありました。災いがある度に、パロは悔い改めてイスラエル人を去らせる機会を与えられていました。しかし、パロは毎回、拒みました。

Finally, Moses warned Pharaoh that the last plague would cause the death of the first born child in each family would be killed.  Pharaoh still refused. 

最後に、モーセはパロに、最後の災いがすべての長子を皆殺しにするだろうと警告しました。パロはそれでも拒みました。

The Lord to Moses to warn the Israelites about this last plague.  The Israelites were told to sacrifice a lamb and to put the blood of the lamb on the top of the door posts and on each side of the door posts.  If they did that, the destroying angel would pass by that house and not kill anyone.  

主はこの最後の災いについてイスラエル人に警告するようモーセに言われました。イスラエル人は子羊を犠牲にし、子羊の血を門柱の上と鴨居の両側に塗るように言われました。もしそうすれば、殺戮の天使はその家を通り過ぎ、誰も殺さないと。

This “pass over” symbolized the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God.  It is through his blood, shed for us, that the great Atonement was made possible.  The Israelites were commanded to always remember the Passover and to observe it every year.  Even today, faithful Jewish people celebrate the Passover.

この「過越」は、イエス・キリストの犠牲を象徴しています。イエス・キリストは神の子羊です。偉大な贖罪が可能になったのは、私たちのために流された救い主の血によってです。イスラエル人は過越の祭りを常に覚えて、毎年それを守るように命じられました。今日でも、忠実なユダヤ人は過越の祭りを祝っています。

In the Christian world, we celebrate the Passover, but use the name of “Easter” instead.  Easter also commemorates the Atonement and Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ.  

キリスト教の世界では、過越の祭りを祝いますが、代わりに「イースター」の名前を用います。イースターはまた、私たちの救い主イエス・キリストの贖罪と復活を記念しています。

So even from the days of Moses in the Old Testament, the gospel of Jesus Christ was being taught.  The Lord called prophets, like Moses, to teach the gospel to the people.  It is not something new.  The gospel has been on the earth since the days of Adam.  

旧約聖書にあるモーセの時代から、イエス・キリストの福音が既に教えられていました。主は人々に福音を教えるためにモーセのような預言者を召されました。それは目新しいことではありません。福音はアダムの時代から地上にあったのです。

As we go through this week, let’s think about how the gospel has been on the earth since the beginning.  Let’s remember the great prophets, like Moses, that the Lord called to teach his people.  Let’s remember the many miracles and blessings the Lord has sent to those who are righteous.  Let’s remember that it is only through the great Atonement of Jesus Christ that we can have true happiness.

新しい週が始まります。福音が世の初めからどのように与えられていたのか考えてみましょう。主が民を教えるために召されたモーセのような偉大な預言者たちのことを思い起こしてみましょう。主が義人に示された多くの奇跡と祝福を覚えていましょう。私たちが真の幸福を得ることができるのは、イエス・キリストの大いなる贖罪を通してのみであることを忘れないでください。
