And now, by dearly beloved brethren and sisters, let me assure you that these are principles in relation to the dead and the living that cannot be lightly passed over, as pertaining to our salvation. For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation, as Paul says concerning the fathers — that they without us cannot be made perfect — neither can we without our dead be made perfect. Doctrine & Covenants 128:14
During the month of September 1842, the Prophet Joseph Smith was forced to leave Nauvoo for a period of time because of the great persecutions of the enemies of the Church. It was during this time that Sections 127 and 128 of the Doctrine and Covenants were received.

In both of these two Sections, the Lord, through the Prophet Joseph Smith, restores important information concerning the baptisms for the dead. In particular, the Prophet instructs the Church on the importance of having proper witnesses and of keeping accurate and correct records of baptisms for the dead.
これら二つの章で、主は預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して、死者のためのバプテスマに関する重要な知識を回復しておられます。特に、預言者は、死者のためのバプテスマにおいて適切な証人と、正確な記録をとることの重要性について教会を指導しています。
The doctrine of baptism for the dead is one of the greatest of all blessings for God’s children. It shows the great love that Heavenly Father has for his children. It opens the way for those who have lived on the earth at a time when the gospel was not available to receive all of the ordinances necessary for salvation.
死者のためのバプテスマの教義は、神の子供にとって最も大きな祝福のひとつです。それは天父が子供たちに対して抱いておられる大きな愛の表れです。福音の祝福を受けれなかった時代に住んでいた人々が救いに必要なすべての儀式を受けるための道を開いてくれるからです。
In verse 17 of Section 128, the Prophet Joseph Smith declared that this was “the most glorious of all subjects belonging to the everlasting gospel”.
128章17節で、預言者ジョセフ・スミスはこれが「永遠の福音に属するすべての事項の中で最も栄光ある」と宣言しています。
Without this doctrine, millions of Heavenly Father’s children would be forever cut off from the blessings of eternal life. Without this doctrine, God would not be a just God. Without this doctrine, we could not be saved either.
この教義がなければ、幾百万人もの天父の子供たちが永遠の生命の祝福から永遠に切り離されてしまうことでしょう。この教義がなければ、神は神ではなくなるのです。この教義がなければ、私たちも救われることはできません。
In verse 14, we are told very clearly that “their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation” and “neither can we without our dead be made perfect”.
14節では、「彼らの救いは私たちの救いにとって必要であり、不可欠だからである」そして「私たちの死者なしには、私たちも完全な者とされることはない」と非常に明確に述べられました。
We are blessed to live in a time when there are temples once again on the earth. As the Lord hastens his work, more temples are being constructed, bringing the blessings of eternity to more of Heavenly Father’s children.
再び、地上に神殿がある時代に暮らせることは幸せです。主が業を早めるにつれて、より多くの神殿が建設され、より多くの天父の子供たちに永遠の祝福がもたらされます。
We have a great responsibility placed upon our shoulders. We have a solemn duty and responsibility to provide the ordinances of salvation to our ancestors. Our ancestors worked and served through generations of darkness, when the gospel was not on earth, to make it possible for us to enjoy life today. We owe them a great debt.
私たちには大きな責任があります。先祖に救いの儀式をもたらすという厳粛な義務と責任があります。私たちの先祖は、福音が地上になかったとき、何世代にもわたって暗闇の中で働き、奉仕をしてくれたことで、今日私たちが楽しく暮らせるようになりました。私たちは彼らに多額の負債を負っています。
We have temples available to us today. We also have many family history tools, like FamilySearch, that help us search for our ancestors. FamilySearch can be a great tool to help us find those who are in need of ordinances. But a tool is of no value unless we use it.
今日、私たちには神殿があります。また、祖先を探求するのに役立つ、ファミリーサーチのような多くの家族歴史ツールがあります。ファミリーサーチは、儀式を必要としている人を見つけるのに役立つ素晴らしいツールです。しかし、ツールは、使わない限り価値がありません。
Are we willing to follow the admonition of the Prophet? Are we willing to carry out our duty and obligation to our ancestors? Are we willing to provide temple ordinances to those whose salvation is necessary for our own salvation?
預言者の忠告に心から従いたいと思っていますか？私たちは先祖に対する義務と恩恵を喜んで遂行しますか？自分の救いのためにも、救いが必要な人たちの神殿の儀式を喜んで遂行しますか。
As we go through this week, let’s remember the trials and struggles of our own ancestors. Let’s remember that, in the Spirit World, we knew them and loved them. Let’s remember that we will meet all of them again when our time on this earth is over. Let’s remember that they are waiting for us to provide the ordinances that are necessary for them to progress. Let’s go forward, search out their names, and complete their temple work so that they, and we, can receive salvation.
