No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; Doctrine & Covenants 121:41
Section 121 of the Doctrine and Covenants was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith during the time when he and others were being held in the damp, dark, and filthy prison in Liberty, Missouri.
教義と聖約121章は、預言者ジョセフ・スミスと他の人々がミズーリ州リバティーの暗くて不潔な刑務所に収容されていたときに与えられました。
As the revelation begins, the Prophet pleads for help from the Lord to be released from the terrible sufferings he was enduring. The Lord, in great mercy, tells the Prophet that his sufferings “shall be but a small moment” and that he will triumph over all of his enemies.
啓示を受け始めると、預言者は耐えていたひどい苦しみから解放されるよう主に助けを懇願しました。主は大いなる憐れみをもって、苦しみは「つかの間に過ぎない」と告げ、すべての敵を打ち負かだろうと預言者に言われました。
The Lord then teaches the Prophet what will happen to those wicked people who fight against the Church. Those wicked people will suffer in this life and “shall not have the right to the priesthood, nor their posterity after them”.
次に、主は預言者に、教会に敵対する邪悪な人々に何が起こるかを教えています。それらの邪悪な人々はこの世で苦しみ、「彼らの後の子孫も代々、神権を受ける権利を持たないであろう」と。
The Lord then promises great blessings of knowledge to the Prophet. He reminds us that no one can stop the work of the Lord. “As well might man stretch forth his puny arm to stop the Missouri River” as to prevent the Lord from sending down blessings on the faithful members of the Church.
それから主は知識を預言者に与え、大きな祝福を約束されています。だれも主の働きを止めることはできないことを思い起こされておられます。主が忠実な教会員に与えられる祝福を妨げることは、あたかも「人がそのか弱い腕を伸べて、ミズーリ川をとどめようとするようなもの」であると。
Then the Lord adds a very important caution. He says very clearly that everything in the Church must be done with love and kindness. We are told that “there are many called, but few are chosen” because they do not understand this principle.
それから主は非常に重要な注意を付け加えておられます。教会でのすべての事柄は、愛と親切によってなされなければならないと非常にはっきりと述べておられます。「召される者は多いが、選ばれる者は少ない」のはこの原則を理解していないからだと言われています。
Too many times, even in the Church, we see people who begin to think that they are better than others, just because they have been given an important assignment. While this happens constantly in the world, with people seeking fame, fortune, or power, it should never happen in the Church.
教会の中でさえ、重要な召しを与えられたという理由だけで、自分は他の人よりも優れていると考え始める人々を何度も目にしています。これは世間では常であり、人は名声、富、権力を求めています。しかし、それは教会では決して起こってはならないことです。
We are taught that everyone has free agency, the right to choose for themselves what they will do. No one is forced to do anything.
私たちは、誰もが何をするか自分で選ぶ権利、つまり自由意思を持っていると教えられています。誰も何かをするよう強制されることはありません。
No one in the Church should ever try to force someone to do something. We should never demand that others do what we tell them to do. That is strictly contrary to the teachings of the Savior.
教会では誰かに何かを強制しようとすべきではありません。他の人に私たちが指示したことをするように要求してはなりません。それは救い主の教えにまったく反しています。
In all our interactions with others, but especially within our own families, we must follow this commandment. Our duty is to help others come unto Christ “by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned”.
他の人とのすべての交流において、特に家族の中で、私たちはこの戒めに従わなければなりません。私たちの義務は、「説得により、寛容により、温厚と柔和により、また偽りのない愛により」他の人がキリストに来るのを助けることです。
If we do this, we are promised great and eternal blessings. We are told that our confidence will be strong in the presence of God; and that the Holy Ghost will be our constant companion.
そうするときに、私たちは大いなる永遠の祝福を約束されます。私たちは神の前においてあなたの自信は増し、聖霊は常にあなたの伴侶となると言われています。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember this important commandment from the Lord. Let’s improve our ability to love others. Let’s treat everyone with kindness. Let’s remember that to exercise control or dominion over others is wrong. Let’s become better examples of a follower of Jesus Christ. Let’s be worthy to receive the great blessings that have been promised to those who obey this commandment.
新しい週が始まります。主からのこの重要な戒めを心に留めて過ごしましょう。他人を愛する能力を向上させましょう。誰にでも優しく接しましょう。人を支配しようとするのは間違っていることを忘れないでください。イエス・キリストの従者のより良い模範になりましょう。この戒めに従う人々に約束された大いなる祝福を受けるにふさわしくなるようにしましょう。
