Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.  Doctrine & Covenants 112:10

At the time that Section 112 of the Doctrine and Covenants was given, Thomas B. Marsh was serving as the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  The Church was very small and was struggling to survive.  

教義と聖約112章が与えられたとき、トーマス・B・マーシュは十二使徒定員会の会長を務めていました。その時、教会は非常に小さく、存続する事すら難しい状況でした。

The Lord had called the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to go to England as missionaries.  They had great success there and many converts traveled from England to be with the Saints.  This was a great blessing to the Church.

主は十二使徒定員会の会員に宣教師としてイギリスに行くように召されました。そこで彼らは大きな成功を収め、多くの改宗者がイギリスから聖徒たちに同行しました。これは教会にとって大きな祝福でした。

In Section 112, the Lord instructs Thomas Marsh about his calling.  In verse 10, the counsel given to Thomas applies to us as well.

112章で、主はトーマス・マーシュに彼の召しについて指示を与えておられます。10節のトーマスに与えられた勧告は私たちにも当てはまります。

We are counseled to be humble.  

私たちは謙遜になるようにと勧告を受けています。

That may seem like a strange thing to the world.  The world does not respect humility.  The world wants praise, fame, wealth.  In the eyes of the world, being humble is a sign of weakness.  The world looks down on those who are humble.  

それは奇妙なことのように思えるかもしれません。一般に謙遜であることは重視されていません。世は賞賛、名声、富を求めています。世の目には、謙遜であることは弱さの表れです。世は謙遜な人を軽視しています。

Yet, in the gospel, being humble is one of the great virtues that we should all strive for.  In the scriptures, we are taught many times that the Lord loves those who are humble, who are “poor in spirit”, who have “broken hearts”.  The virtues that are important to the Lord include such things as humility, diligence, brotherly kindness, and patience.

しかし、福音では、謙遜であることは、私たちが努力すべき大きな美徳であると教えられています。聖典の中で、主は謙遜な人、「こころの貧しい人」、「柔和な人」を愛しておられると何度も教えられています。 主にとって重要な徳には、謙遜、勤勉、兄弟愛、忍耐などがあります。

Why is being humble so important?

なぜ謙遜であることはそれほど重要なのでしょうか？

The Lord has told us that we must become as a little child.  This obviously does not mean without knowledge or without physical stature.  Rather, it means that we must trust the Lord as a child trusts their parents.  It means that we must love the Lord as a child loves their parents.  It means that we must obey the Lord as a child obeys their parents.

主は私たちが小さな子供のようでなければならないと教えておられます。これは明らかに、知識がないとか小さいという意味ではありません。むしろ、子供が両親を信頼するように、私たちは主を信頼しなければならないことを意味します。それは、子供が両親を愛するように、私たちが主を愛さなければならないことを意味します。それは、子供が両親に従うように私たちは主に従わなければならないことを意味します。

In verse 10, the Lord explains the blessing that will come as a result of obedience to this commandment to be humble.  We are promised that the Lord will “lead thee by the hand”.  The Lord always knows what is best for us.  Just as a loving parent takes a child’s hand to lead them and to keep them safe, the Lord promises to take us by the hand and lead us.

10節で、主は謙遜になるというこの戒めに従った結果もたらされる祝福について説明されています。私たちは、主が「手を引いてあなたを導く」と約束されています。 主は私たちにとって何が最善かを常にご存知です。愛情深い親が子供の手を取り、子供たちを導き、安全にまもられるように、主は私たちの手に取り、導くと約束されています。

In this same verse, the Lord also promises to give us answers to our prayers if we are humble.  We know with absolute certainty that those promised blessings will come.  The Lord does not always give us those answers immediately, but the answers will come in the due time of the Lord.  If we do our part, and learn to be humble, the Lord will always do his part and give us the promised blessings.

この同じ節で、主はまた、謙遜であるならば、私たちの祈りに答えると約束されています。私たちは、それらの約束された祝福が来ることを確信しています。主はいつもすぐに答えられるとは限りませんが、答えは主の時に与えられます。私たちが自分の役割を果たし、謙遜になることを学ぶなら、主は常に約束を守り、祝福を与えてくださいます。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember that humility is one of the important virtues we need to learn.  Being kind to others, being patient with family members, even being patient with ourselves, are some of the ways that we can improve our ability to be humble.  Let’s do our best to be humble and to be worthy to receive the blessings promised by the Lord.
