They were slow to harken to the voice of the Lord their God; therefore, the Lord their God is slow to harken unto their prayers, to answer them in the day of their trouble.  In the day of their peace they esteemed lightly my counsel; but, in the day of their trouble, of necessity they feel after me.  Doctrine & Covenants 101:7-8

During the time that this revelation was received, the members of the Church in Missouri were experiencing great trials and persecution.  They had been driven out of their homes in Jackson County and many had lost all their personal property, their livestock, and their crops.  

この啓示を受けた時、ミズーリ州の教会員は大きな試練と迫害を経験していました。彼らはジャクソン郡の家から追放され、多くの人が私物、家畜、作物をすべて失いました。

In Section 101 of the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord explains why some of these trials were happening.  In verses 7 and 8, the Lord tells the Prophet Joseph Smith that the members in Missouri had not kept the commandments that had been given to them.  

教義と聖約の101章で、主はこれらの試練が起こった理由を説明されています。7節と8節で、主は預言者ジョセフ・スミスに与えられた戒めをミズーリ州の教会員が守っていなかったからだと述べられています。

They had been “slow to harken to the voice of the Lord”.  Because of their disobedience and their failure to keep the commandments, the Lord was not able to give them the blessings they needed.

彼らは「主の声に聞き従うのが遅かった」のです。彼らが不従順と戒めを守らなかったために、主は必要な祝福を彼らに与えることができませんでした。

Sadly, this same behavior pattern is still very common in the world today.  Even members of the Church fall into this temptation of Satan. 

悲しいことに、今日でもこれと同じ行動パターンは非常に一般的なことです。教会員でさえ、このサタンの誘惑に陥ります。

When things are going smoothly in our lives, when we don’t have big trials or troubles, we tend to forget the Lord.  We think we can be happy without keeping all of the commandments.  We think that we are in control of our own lives.  

生活が順調なときや、大きな試練や悩みがないとき、私たちは主を忘れがちです。戒めをすべて守らなくても幸せになれると考えます。私たちは自分の生活を自分でコントロールしていると考えます。

We forget to say our prayers and to read the scriptures each day.  We choose to not attend all of our Church meetings.  We do not serve diligently in our callings.

私たちは毎日祈ったり聖文を読んだりすることを忘れています。教会のすべての集会に出席しないことを選択したり、召しを熱心に奉仕しなかったりします。

This is a trick of Satan.  He whispers in our ears that all these things are okay. He wants us to stop saying our prayers.  He wants us to stop reading the scriptures.  He wants us to stop going to Church.

これはサタンの罠です。彼は私たちにそのようなことは大丈夫だとささやきます。彼は私たちに祈りを止めさせたいと望んでいます。また、私たちに聖典を読むのをやめさせたい、教会に行くのをやめさせたいと望んでいます。

He wants us to stop doing these small things that are so important.  If we stop doing these small things, the Holy Ghost cannot be with us all the time.  If we stop doing these small things, we lose the guidance of the Spirit.  If we stop doing these small things, we start moving away from the covenant path.

彼は私たちにこうした小さくても重要な事柄をやめさせようと望んでいます。私たちがこうした小さなことをやめれば、聖霊は常に私たちと共にいることはできません。こうした小さなことをやめると、御霊の導きを失い、契約の道から離れ始めます。

Then, when the next trial suddenly comes into our lives, we want the Lord to save us immediately.  We want instant relief from our problem.  We want to be freed from the trial right away. 

そして、次の試練が突然私たちを襲うとき、主にすぐに救ってもらいたいと望みます。私たちは問題から、そして試練から即座に解放されたいと望みます。

But that is not how it works.  If we want to receive the promised blessings, we need to do the small things.  We need to say our prayers each day.  We need to read the scriptures each day.  We need to attend all of our Church meetings.

しかし、そのようにはなりません。約束された祝福を受けたいなら、小さなことをする必要があります。私たちは毎日祈る必要があります。毎日聖典を読む必要がありますし、教会のすべての集会に出席する必要があります。

We will still have trials and hardships.  That is part of plan for this life.  But we will be able to receive guidance from the Holy Ghost to know what to do.  We will receive strength from the Spirit of the Lord to be able to endure the trial.  We will be able to receive the blessings that we need.  We need to do our part.

それでも私たちは試練と苦難を経験します。それはこの世の計画の一部だからです。しかし、私たちは聖霊を通してすべきことについて導きを受けます。私たちは主の御霊から力を受けて、試練に耐えることができます。必要な祝福を受けることができます。 私たちは自分の務めを果たす必要があります。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the example of those early members in Missouri.  Let’s remember that their failure to keep the commandments made it more difficult for them to receive the blessings that they needed.  Let’s remember to do the small things that will keep us close to the Lord and worthy to receive his blessings.
