A Word of Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion, to be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days– Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak, and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints. Doctrine and Covenants 89:1-3
Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants is one of the best known of all the sections. It contains the revelation that we usually refer to as the Word of Wisdom.

There are four parts to this revelation, the introduction, the prohibitions, the recommendations, and the promises.
この啓示には、指導、禁制、勧め、および約束の4つがあります。
In the introduction, the Lord tells us who this revelation is going to help. “For the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion”. It is given for the benefit of the high priests, for the benefit of the members of the Church, and for the benefit of the saint is Zion. In other words, it is given for the benefit of each one of us.
はじめに、主はこの啓示が誰を助けるのかを教えておられます。 「カートランドに集まった大祭司の評議会、教会、そしてシオンの聖徒たちの利益のために」。それは大祭司の利益のために、教会員の利益のために、そしてシオンの聖徒の利益のために与えられています。言い換えれば、私たち一人一人の利益のために与えられています。
It also says in the introduction that this revelation is given “not be commandment or constraint”. What does that mean? Does it mean that this is not a commandment?
また、冒頭で、この啓示は「戒めや強制ではない」と述べています。どういう意味ですか？これは戒めではないという意味ですか？
The Lord knew it would take time for the member of the Church to overcome the habit of using the things that are prohibited in this revelation. It would take time to get over the addictions. The Lord was very patient with the saints as they struggled to live this law.
主は、教会員がこの啓示で禁じられているものを使う習慣を克服するには時間がかかることをご存知でした。中毒を克服するには時間がかかります。彼らがこの律法を守るのに苦労していたとき、主は聖徒たちに非常に忍耐強くおられました。
In the days of Brigham Young, there was only one question about the Word of Wisdom in the temple recommend interview. The question was, “do you get drunk?”. Finally, in 1927, almost 100 years after this revelation was given to the Church, President Heber J. Grant announced “in order to enter the temple, you must now keep the Word of Wisdom completely”. As of that time, the Word of Wisdom became a commandment.

There are only four things prohibited by the Word of Wisdom: wine and strong drink, tobacco, coffee, and tea. “Wait a minute”, you say. “Where does it say coffee and tea are prohibited?” It does not. It just says “hot drinks”. But both Hyrum Smith and Brigham Young taught that the term “hot drinks” meant coffee and tea. Brigham Young said, “What else were we in the habit of drinking hot? Hot water? No, we drank hot coffee and hot tea. That is what is meant by the term “hot drinks”.
知恵の言葉で禁じられているのは、ワインと強い飲料、タバコ、コーヒー、お茶の4つだけです。「ちょっと待って」、 「コーヒーとお茶はどこで禁止だと書いてありますか？」 そうは書いてありません。「熱い飲料」とだけ書いてあります。しかし、ハイラム・スミスとブリガム・ヤングはどちらも、「熱い飲料」という用語はコーヒーと紅茶を意味すると教えていました。ブリガム・ヤングは、次のように述べています。お湯？ いいえ、ホットコーヒーとホットティーを飲みました。それが「熱い飲料」という言葉の意味です。
Those are the only four things that are prohibited. Sometimes, some people want to add other items to that list, items like white sugar, white bread, cola soft drinks, and so on. None of those things are prohibited by the Word of Wisdom. No one, other than the Lord through his prophet, can add anything else to those four items.
禁止されているのはこれらの4つだけです。時々、そのリストに他のアイテム、白砂糖、白いパン、コーラソフトドリンクなどのアイテムを追加したい人もいます。それらのどれも知恵の言葉によって禁止されていません。預言者を通して与えられた主以外の誰も、これら4つの項目に他のものを追加することはできません。
Following the list of prohibited things is a list of things that are good for us. We are taught that all grains, herbs, and vegetables are good for food. Meat is also acceptable for food, but is to be used sparingly. In the days when this revelation was given, people at meat at almost every meal. The Lord teaches us that we need to use judgement in choosing what we eat.
禁止されているもののリストの他に、私たちにとって良いもののリストがあります。私たちは、すべての穀物、ハーブ、野菜が食べ物に良いと教えられています。肉も食品として受け入れられますが、控えめに使用する必要があります。この啓示が与えられた時代には、人々はほとんどすべての食事で肉を食べていました。主は私たちが食べるものを選ぶ際に判断を使う必要があると教えておられます。
Finally, as with every commandment, there is a blessing promised to those who obey the commandment. We are promised that we will be healthier and live longer, that we will receive additional knowledge from the Lord, and that we will be protected from the power of Satan.
最後に、すべての戒めと同様に、戒めに従う人々に約束された祝福があります。私たちはより健康で長生きし、主からさらに知識を受け、サタンの力から守られることが約束されています。
Great blessings come to us by keeping this commandment.

Let’s all do our best to obey this commandment each day. Let’s remember to make wise choices in deciding what and how much to eat. Let’s remember the great promises that will come to us if we obey the Lord.
毎日この戒めに従うよう最善を尽くしましょう。何をどれだけ食べるのか賢明な選択と決定をしてください。主に従うならば、私たちにもたらされる大きな約束があることを忘れないようにしましょう。
