Behold, they have been sent to preach my gospel among the congregations of the wicked; wherefore, I give unto them a commandment, thus: Thou shall not idle away thy time, neither shall thou bury they talent that is may not be known.  Doctrine & Covenants 60:13

In August of 1831, a group of elders in Jackson County Missouri, who were assigned to return to the East, asked the Prophet for instruction and counsel for their travels.  In response to their request, the Prophet received the revelation contained in Section 60.

What is interesting about this particular Section of the Doctrine and Covenants is that twice in this short section the Lord strongly reminds those elders that they need to be more faithful.

In verses 2-3, the Lord says, “mine anger is kindled against them”.  Why?

Because “they will not open their mouths, but they hide the talent which I have given them”.

「彼らは口を開こうとせず、私が与えたタラントを隠している」からです。

Again in verse 13, the Lord says, “thou shalt not idle away thy time nor bury thy talent”.

再び13節で、主は「あなたは時間を無駄に過ごしてはならず、またタラントを隠してはならない」と言われています。

Both of these warnings apply to us today just as they did to those elders in Jackson County.

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and as disciples of Jesus Christ, we have a duty and a responsibility to “let our light shine” and to share our talents with others.

末日聖徒イエス・キリスト教会の会員として、またイエス・キリストの弟子として、私たちには「光を輝かせ」、タラントを他の人と分かち合う義務と責任があります。

That does not mean that we should all be called as full-time missionaries, but it does mean that we should use the talents with which we have been blessed to help the work of the Lord.

それは、私たち全員がフルタイム宣教師に召されるべきという意味ではありませんが、主の業を助けるために私たちが祝福されてきたタラントを使うべきという意味です。

But, you say, “I have no talents.  I have never been a bishop or a Relief Society president.  I am shy and have a hard time talking with people about the Church.  I don’t have any talents to share”.

しかし、あなたは「私にはタラントがありません。私はビショップや扶助協会の会長になったことがありません。私は恥ずかしがり屋で、教会について人々と話すのに苦労しています。分かち合えるタラントなどありません。」と言うかもしれません。

Not true!

Every one of us has been given talents.  Those talents may not be obvious, but we have been given talents.  It is our duty to find out what our own talents are.  If we don’t even try to find out what our talents are, we are burying our talents.

私たち一人一人にタラントが与えられています。それらのタラントが明白でなくても、私たちはタラントを与えられているのです。私たちの義務はタラントが何であるかを知ることです。どのようなタラントがあるかを探す努力をしなければ、私たちはタラントを隠していることになるのです。

Some people are given the talent to be great speakers.  Some people are given the talent to preside in various Church organizations.  Some people are given the talent to be a great missionary.  

ある人は素晴らしい講演者になるタラントを与えられています。さまざまな教会組織で主宰するタラントを与えられている人もいます。偉大な宣教師になるタラントを与えられている人もいます。

Maybe your talent is to share music with others.  Maybe your talent is to be a good friend.  Maybe your talent is to help someone in need.  Maybe your talent is to be a good example of a follower of Jesus Christ.  Maybe your talent is to pray with faith.  Maybe your talent is to teach children.  

あなたのタラントは他の人と音楽を分かち合うことかもしれません。または、良い友達になること、困っている人を助けること、イエス・キリストの従者の良い模範になることかもしれません。あなたのタラントは信仰を持って祈ることや子供たちに教えることかもしれません。

Whatever your talents are, and you do have talents, you need to use those talents to serve others.  Even though your talent may seem small to you, that talent will be a great blessing to those you serve.  As you seek for opportunities to be “the hands of the Lord”, you will be able to use your talents to help others.

あなたのタラントが何であれ、他の人に奉仕するためにそのタラントを使う必要があります。タラントがあなたには小さく見えても、そのタラントはあなたが仕える人々にとって大きな祝福となるでしょう。「主のみ手」となる機会を探すとき、あなたはタラントを他の人を助けるために使うことができるでしょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s go forward with faith in Jesus Christ.  Let’s prayerfully consider what our own individual talents are.  Let’s seek for opportunities to use those talents to help others.  Let’s be bold and serve as “the hands of the Lord”.
