また、父があなたがたに与えたいと望んでおられる富を、あなたがたが求めるならば、あなたがたはすべての民の中で最も富んだ者になるであろう。あなたがたは永遠の富を持つからである。地の富はわたしのものであり、わたしがそれを与えるのである。しかし、あなたがたは昔のニーフアイ人のようにならないよう、高慢に気をつけなさい。教義と聖約　３８：３９

And if ye seek the riches which it is the will of the Father to give unto you, ye shall be the richest of all people, for ye shall have the riches of eternity; and it must needs be that the riches of the earth are mine to give; but beware of pride, lest ye become as the Nephites of old.

Doctrine & Covenants 38:39

This section of the Doctrine & Covenants was given in January 1831, at a conference of the Church at Fayette, in New York state.  Today, we would probably call this a General Conference, since it really involved the whole Church.  It reminds us that in a General Conference of the Church, whether in 1831 or in 2021, the will of the Lord is revealed to us through his appointed prophet. 

教義と聖約のこの章は、1831年1月にニューヨーク州のフェイエットで開かれた教会の大会で与えられました。それは今日、総大会と呼ばれているものでしょう。なぜなら、それは教会全体に関わる大会だったからです。1831年であろうと2021年であろうと、教会の総大会では召された預言者を通して主の御心を明らかにされることを私たちは理解しています。

In this revelation, the Lord gives a number of instructions to the new Church.  Remember, at the time of this conference, the Church had been organized for only about nine months.  No one knew how the Church should function, or how a General Conference should be conducted, or what was expected of members of the Church of Jesus Christ.  It was all new to them.

この啓示の中で、主は新しい教会に多くの指示を与えておられます。この時、教会は組織されて約９ヶ月しか経っていないことを忘れないでください。教会がどのように機能するべきか、総大会がどのように行われるべきか、あるいはイエス・キリスト教会の会員に何が期待されているかを誰も知りませんでした。それらは彼らにとって全く新しいものでした。

In this Section, the Lord teaches us an important doctrine.  We are taught that we need to focus on the riches of eternity rather than on the riches of this world.

この章では、主が私たちに重要な教義を教えておられます。私たちは、この世の富ではなく、永遠の富に焦点を合わせる必要があると教えておられます。

The world thinks this is crazy.  The world wants to have riches, but the riches they want are all of this world.  They want expensive cars, big houses, fancy clothes, lots of money.  Those are the riches that the world seeks.

世間ではこれは奇妙だと思っています。この世の人々は富を持ちたいと思っていますが、彼らが望む富はこの世のすべてです。彼らは高価な車、大きな家、派手な服、たくさんのお金を欲しがっています。それらはすべてこの世が求める富です。

The problem with these riches is that they are all only temporary.  We know that when we die, and every living person on the earth will die someday, we can take none of those worldly riches with us into the next world.

これらの富の問題は、それらがすべて一時的なものにすぎないことです。私たちが死ぬとき、そして地球上のすべての生きている者がいつか死ぬとき、私たちはそれらのこの世的な富のどれも一緒に次の世界に持っていくことができないことを知っています。

There is an old story about a rich man who was about to die.  He told his servants to collect all his gold and put it into a suitcase.  He died that night and took the suitcase full of gold with him into the next world.  When he got there, he proudly showed the angels all his gold.  The angels looked at the gold, then looked at the man, and then looked at the gold again.  One of the angels finally asked him, “Why did you bring all these paving stones with you?  We have plenty here.”

死にかけた金持ちの昔話があります。彼は使用人に彼のすべての金塊を集めてスーツケースに入れるように言いました。彼はその晩、亡くなり、金塊でいっぱいのスーツケースを次の世界に持っていきました。彼がそこに着いたとき、彼は誇らしげに天使たちにすべての金塊を見せました。天使たちは金塊を見て、それから男を見て、そして再び金塊を見ました。天使の一人がついに彼に尋ねました。「なぜあなたはこれらすべての敷石を持ってきたのですか？ ここにはたくさんあります。」

The riches that Heavenly Father wants to give to his children are not “paving stones”.  The “riches of eternity” can be ours if we keep the commandments.  The riches of eternity are much more valuable than any treasure here on earth.  

天の御父が子供たちに与えたいと願っている富は「敷石」ではありません。戒めを守れば、「永遠の富」は私たちのものにできるのです。永遠の富は、この地球上のどの宝物よりもはるかに価値があります。

Some of the riches of eternity are the blessing to be with our own families forever, to have peace in this life in spite of trials and hardships, to be baptized and to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, to be able to take the sacrament, to be able to receive eternal blessings in the Temple.  

永遠の富とは、私たちの家族と永遠にいること、試練と苦難の中でも平安を持てること、バプテスマを受け、聖霊の賜物を授かること、聖餐をとれること、神殿で永遠の祝福を受けることができるなどの祝福です。

These are some of the greatest blessings that we can receive.  These are blessings that we can take with us when we leave this life.  These are blessings that are truly the riches of eternity.

これらは私たちが享受できる最大の祝福です。これらは私たちがこの人生を去るときに持っていける祝福です。これらは確かに永遠の富という祝福です。

The world can lust after money, fame, and fortune.  Let us focus on true riches, the riches that never end.

この世はお金、名声、そして幸運を欲しがる傾向があります。真の富、終わりのない富に焦点を合わせましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s evaluate how we are doing in following this promise of the Lord.  Let’s be sure we are focusing on the most important blessings.  Let’s do all that we can do to qualify for the “riches of eternity”.
