Verily, verily, I say unto you, even as you desire of me, so it shall be done unto you; and, if you desire, you shall be the means of doing much good in this generation. Doctrine & Covenants 11:8
This scripture was given by the Prophet Joseph Smith to his older brother, Hyrum. Hyrum was an early believer of the gospel and was second only to the Prophet Joseph Smith in helping to restore the gospel. He served as a counselor in the First Presidency and, after the death of Joseph Smith, senior, he was called to be the Patriarch to the Church.
この聖句は預言者ジョセフ・スミスから兄のハイラムに与えられたものです。ハイラムは福音の初期の信者であり、福音の回復を助けたことで預言者ジョセフ・スミスに次ぐものでした。彼は大管長会で顧問を務め、ジョセフ・スミス・シニアの死後、教会の祝福師に召されました。
In these early days of the Church, there was no history to look back on. There were no General Conference talks to study. There was no one who had been a life-long member of the Church. Everything was new.
このような初期の教会では、参考にできる歴史は何もありませんでした。研究する総大会のお話しもありませんでした。生まれながらの教会員は誰もいませんでした。すべてが新しいものでした。
The early Saints wanted to do what was right. In many cases, they did not know exactly what was right. It was very common to ask the Prophet for direct revelation to help them in their individual situations. We find a number of these types of revelations recorded in the early Sections of the Doctrine & Covenants.
初期の聖徒たちは正しいことをしたいと望んでいました。しかし多くの状況で何が正しいのかはっきりとは分かりませんでした。彼らが個々の状況において助言を得るために預言者に啓示を求めることは非常に一般的でした。教義と聖約の最初の方にある章ではそのような啓示がいくつか見つかります。
In this particular Section, in answer to the Prophet’s inquiry on Hyrum’s behalf, the Lord’s response and instructions for Hyrum are recorded. These same instructions apply to each of us.
この章では、ハイラムに代わって預言者が尋ねた答えとして、ハイラムへの主の回答と指示が記録されています。 これらの指示は私たち一人一人にも当てはまります。
In verse 7, for example, Hyrum is reminded that the riches of this world are only temporary. He is told to seek for wisdom, not for riches. He is also given the promise that “he who hath eternal life is rich”.
たとえば7節で、ハイラムはこの世の富は一時的なものに過ぎないことを思い起こさせています。富のためではなく、知恵を求めるように言われました。また、「永遠の命を持つものは豊かである」という約束を受けました。
This is wise counsel for each of us. Too many people become so fixated on money, on having a big house, on having fancy clothes, that they forget about the most important things. The riches of this world cannot be taken with us as we go into the spirit world. They will all be left behind. Only our good deeds, our ministering, our service to others will go with us.
これは私たち一人一人にとって賢明な勧告です。あまりにも多くの人がお金、大きな家、派手な服を着ることに夢中になり、最も重要なことを忘れています。私たちが霊界に行くとき、この世の富を持っていくことはできません。それらはすべて置いて行くことになります。私たちの善行、ミニスタリング、他人への奉仕だけが持っていけるものなのです。
In verse 8, Hyrum is given a great promise. He is told that he can “be the means of doing much good in this generation”. What a great promise!
8節で、ハイラムは偉大な約束を受けています。彼は「この時代に大いに善を行う仲立ちとなるであろう」と言われました。 なんと素晴らしい約束でしょう。
That same promise is available to each of us. We each can be the means of doing much good, right here in our own generation.
同じ約束が私たち一人一人にも用意されています。私たちのこの時代にも、一人一人が、大いに善を行う仲立ちとなることができるのです。
There is a condition attached to that promise, though. Hyrum is told that he can be the means of doing much good only if he desires. It will not happen automatically. There is no assurance given that it will be easy. There is no promise that it will not take hard work.
ただし、その約束には条件があります。ハイラムは、彼が望むなら、大いに善を行う仲立ちとなることができると言われました。何もせずにはそれは起こりません。それが簡単であるという保証もありません。大変な労力を要しないという約束もありません。
So it is for each of us. If we desire, we can do much good. If we desire, we can serve others. If we desire, we can minister to those around us. If we desire…
ですから、これは私たちのためです。私たちが望むなら、私たちは大いに善を行うことができます。私たちは他の人に仕えることができ、周りの人々に奉仕することができます。 私たちが望むなら・・・
As we go through this next week, let’s desire to do good. Let’s desire to help others. Let’s desire to do what the Lord needs us to do. Let’s desire to be like Hyrum.
