And what is it that ye shall hope for?  Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of the resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise.  Moroni 7:41

Chapters 7, 8, and 9 of the book of Moroni are messages delivered by Moroni’s father, Mormon.  The prophet Mormon teaches some very powerful lessons in these chapters.

As Moroni reminds us, the Book of Mormon was written for our day.  Mormon selected certain messages from the large Plates of Nephi to include in his abridgement. Those are the messages that the Lord knew we would need in our own day.

The time period that Mormon and Moroni lived in was a time of terrible warfare and destruction.  It must have been very hard for these two prophets to witness the wickedness and the stubbornness of the Nephite people.  The Lord repeatedly sent prophets to warn the Nephites to repent.  Mormon was one of the prophets who tried to convince the Nephites to repent.  He knew that, unless they repented, they would be destroyed.

モルモンとモロナイが住んでいた時代は、ひどい戦争と破壊の時代でした。この二人の預言者がニーファイ人の邪悪さと頑なさを目にするのは非常に辛かったに違いありません。 主は繰り返し預言者を送り、ニーファイ人に悔い改めるよう警告されました。モルモンはニーファイ人に悔い改めるよう説いた預言者の一人でした。 彼は、民が悔い改めない限り、滅ぼされることを知っていました。

As it turned out, the Nephites did not repent.  And, as the Lord had warned them, the Nephites were destroyed at the great battle of Cumorah.  From the report given to us by Mormon, more than 250,000 Nephites were killed in that battle.  Out of all the Nephites, only 24 were left alive.

結局、ニーファイ人は悔い改めませんでした。そして、主が警告されたように、ニーファイ人はクモラの大いなる戦いで滅ぼされました。モルモンの記録によると、その戦いで25万人以上のニーファイ人が殺されました。すべてのニーファイ人のうち、24人だけが生き残ったのです。

After such terrible events, it would be easy for someone to give up hope.  It would be easy for someone to say, “the Lord must not care about me”.  It would be easy for someone to say, “I give up.  There is nothing left for me”.

そのようなひどい出来事の後、希望を無くすのは簡単です。「主は私を気にかけておられない」と言うのは簡単です。「もう諦めます、自分には何も残っていない」と言うのは簡単です。

But that is not the message that Mormon brings to us.

In spite of the great wickedness that he saw, and knowing that the Nephites would be destroyed if they did not repent, Mormon’s message was a message of hope.  Moroni was inspired to include that message in his writings to us.

Yes, we live in a world that is very different than it was just one year ago.  Yes, the pandemic has brought great trials and difficulties to many people.  Yes, many people have suffered the loss of loved ones due to the pandemic.  It would be easy for us to give up hope.

Our trials are not as severe as the trials of Mormon or Moroni.  We have not seen all of our people destroyed in a terrible battle.  We have not lost all of our friends.  We are not all alone in the world with no friends or family.

私たちの試練は、モルモンやモロナイの試練ほど厳しくはありません。私たちは、ひどい戦いですべての人々が滅ぼされるのを見たことがありません。私たちはすべての友達を失ったわけではありません。私たちは、友達や家族がいない世界で一人ぼっちではありません。

We can take hope from the messages of these two great prophets.  Mormon teaches us very clearly that we have hope because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  

私たちはこの二人の偉大な預言者のメッセージから希望を得ることができます。モルモンは、イエス・キリストの贖罪のために私たちに希望があることを非常に明確に教えています。

We have hope because our Savior made it possible for us to repent.  We have hope because Jesus Christ overcame death and made it possible for every one of us to be resurrected.  We have hope that, if we keep the commandments and follow our Savior, we will be “raised unto life eternal”.

救い主が私たちの悔い改めを可能にされたので、私たちは希望を持っています。イエス・キリストが死を克服され、私たち一人一人が復活することを可能にされたので、私たちは希望を持っています。戒めを守り、救い主に従うなら、「永遠の生命に引き上げられる」ことに私たちは希望を持っています。

No matter what happens in the world, if there are pandemics, if there are wars, if there are terrible earthquakes or other natural disasters, the great Atonement of Jesus Christ gives us the hope that we need to endure to the end.  The Lord is in charge.  Nothing can stop the work from going forward.  Nothing can stop blessings coming to those who keep the commandments.  Nothing can change the Savior’s love for us.

パンデミックがあったり、戦争があったり、ひどい地震やその他の自然災害があったり、世界で何が起こっても、イエス・キリストの大いなる贖罪は、私たちが最後まで耐えなければならないという希望を与えてくれます。 主が責任を負ってくださいます。主の業の進行を止めることはできません。戒めを守る人々に祝福が来るのを止めることはできません。救い主の私たちへの愛を変えることはできません。

As we go through this week, let’s remember Mormon’s message of hope.  Let’s remember that the Atonement of Jesus Christ is our sure foundation.  Let’s remember that nothing will stop the work of the Lord.
