And now I speak concerning baptism. Behold, elders, priests, and teachers were baptized; and they were not baptized save they brought forth fruit meet that they were worthy of it. Neither did they receive any unto baptism save they came forth with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, and witnessed unto the church that they truly repented of all their sins. And none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end. Moroni 6:1-3
After Moroni completed his abridgement of the Jaredite record, he wrote a few things of his own. In chapter 6, he teaches us about the principle of baptism.

Moroni teaches us that, just as in the Church today, everyone had to be baptized to become a member of the Church. No one was exempt. No one had any special privileges.

He also teaches us what the prospective member had to do before they could be baptized. He says that no one was baptized unless they “brought forth fruit meet that they were worthy of it”. That means that the prospective member had to show that they had made changes in their life. They had to show that they were willing to live as an example of a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Moroni teaches that, before they could be baptized, they needed to fully and truly repent of all their sins. They needed to become humble, to have a “broken heart and a contrite spirit”. Having a broken heart and a contrite heart does not mean blindly accepting whatever was taught.

Having a broken heart and a contrite spirit means that you are willing to make changes in your life to draw closer to our Savior. It means eliminating habits that are not in keeping with the commandments. It means trying to keep the commandments because we love our Heavenly Father.
打ち砕かれた心と悔いる霊を持つということは、救い主に近づくために人生を変えようとすることを意味します。それは戒めに従わない習慣を取り除くことを意味します。また、天の御父を愛しているから戒めを守ろうとすることを意味します。
Moroni reminds us that, to be baptized, we need to take upon us the name of Christ. Taking upon us the name of Christ means being an example to others of how a disciple of Jesus Christ should live. It means striving to follow the example of our Savior in all that we do each day.
モロナイは、バプテスマを受けるには、キリストの名を引き受ける必要があることを私たちに思い起こさせています。キリストの名を引き受けるということは、イエス・キリストの弟子がどのように生きるべきかを他の人に示す模範となることを意味します。私たちが毎日行うすべてのことにおいて、私たちの救い主の模範に従うよう努めることを意味します。
Finally, Moroni teaches us that, by being baptized, we are showing that we want to keep all the commandments and endure to the end. Enduring to the end means until the end of our time here on earth. It means that, as we make mistakes, we must repent and try to do better. It means praying every day. It means doing our best to serve others. It means never giving up.
最後に、モロナイはバプテスマを受けることで、私たちはすべての戒めを守り、最後まで耐え忍びたいという気持ちを示すのだと教えています。最後まで耐え忍ぶとは、この地上での私たちの時間が終わるときまでを意味します。私たちが間違いを犯したとき、悔い改め、より良くしようとしなければならないことを意味します。また、毎日祈ることを意味します。他人に奉仕するため最善を尽くすことを意味します。また、決してあきらめないことを意味します。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember the messages of the prophet Moroni. Let’s remember the promises and covenants that we made when we were baptized. Let’s remember that, as member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we have a duty and a responsibility to live the gospel and to keep the commandments. Let’s remember that we have taken upon us the name of Christ. Let’s remember to serve him and to endure to the end.
