As Moroni works on his abridgement of the Jaredite record, he had to write about times of great wickedness among the Jaredite people. The people rejected the gospel and stoned the prophets that were sent to warn them of their iniquity. Instead of repenting, the people began to create secret combinations.

Moroni had witnessed how the secret combinations of the Gadianton robbers had completely destroyed the entire Nephite culture. As he worked on the abridgement of the Jaredite record, he was probably saddened to see that those same secret combinations had destroyed the Jaredite nation as well.

Have you ever considered how difficult it was to engrave a record on metal plates? It must have been very time-consuming. It must have been very difficult. It must have made his hands hurt. Yet, he was obedient to the commandments of the Lord.

In this verse, Moroni reminds us why he worked so hard to record his messages.

Like the Jaredites, his own Nephite people have all been destroyed because of wickedness.

He wants to do all that he can to help those who want to follow the Savior. He wants to do all that he can to preserve the history of these ancient people. He wants to let us learn about the dealings of the Lord among these people. He wants us to understand that righteousness leads to happiness and wickedness leads to misery.

But, even after Moroni struggled and suffered to bring us that record, it will all be wasted if we do not do our part.

Unless we seriously and carefully read the Book of Mormon, we cannot benefit from Moroni’s work. Unless we seriously and carefully read the Book of Mormon, Moroni’s efforts were all wasted. Unless we seriously and carefully read the Book of Mormon, we cannot “come unto the fountain of all righteousness and be saved”.

We all want to be happy. We all want to receive blessings. We all want to feel close to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Moroni tells us how we can do that. He explains that he was commanded of the Lord to write those things “that evil may be done away” and that “the children of men may be persuaded to do good continually”.

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the sacrifices of Moroni, Mormon, Nephi, Alma, and many others who worked diligently to bring us the word of God. Let’s remember their purpose in working so hard to engrave those words on the plates. Let’s remember that these words will lead us to the “fountain of all righteousness” and will help us to be saved. Let’s carefully and seriously study the Book of Mormon.
