主はヤレドの兄弟に言われた。「あなたがたは、船の中に光があるようにするために、わたしに何をしてもらいたいのか。窓はばらばらに砕けるので、見よ、窓を付けることはできない。また、火を携えることもない。火の光を使って旅をすることはないからである。」エテル２：２３

And the Lord said unto the brother of Jared: What will ye that I should do that ye may have light in your vessels?  For behold, ye cannot have windows, for they shall be dashed in pieces; neither shall ye take fire with you, for ye shall not go by the light of fire.  Ether 2:23

The Book of Ether is a fascinating record.  It tells of a people who, like the Nephites and the Mulekites, were brought to the American continent by the hand of the Lord.  The history of this people extends back to the very earliest time.  This record is an abridgement of the history on the 24 gold plates that were found by the people of Limhi.  The abridgement was made by Moroni, and tells the sad tale of the destruction of an entire nation.

Like Nephi and his family, the Lord instructed the brother of Jared to build small ships.  These ships were different in design than the ship that Nephi was commanded to build.  They were fully enclosed.  

ニーファイとその家族のように、主はヤレドの兄弟に小さな船を造るように指示されました。それらの船は、ニーファイが建造を命じられた船とはデザインが異なっており、船全体が覆い囲まれていました。

After the brother of Jared completed the ships, he realized that there were some challenges.  One challenge was that, being “tight like unto a dish” in order to keep out the water, they also kept out fresh air.  The brother of Jared understood the fact that in a tight enclosed space, the people would use up all the oxygen in the air and would soon die.  He asked the Lord how to solve this problem and was given instructions by the Lord.

ヤレドの兄弟が船を完成させた後、彼はいくつかの問題があることに気づきました。 一つの問題は、水を防ぐために「皿のようにきつく」、外気が入らないことでした。 ヤレドの兄弟は、狭い閉鎖空間では、人々が空気中のすべての酸素を使い果たし、すぐに死ぬという事実を理解していました。 彼はこの問題を解決する方法を主に尋ね、主から指示を受けました。

The second challenge was that, once the door was closed, there was no light.  This was a different type of problem.  The only light sources known to people in those days was either sunlight or fire.  When the brother of Jared asked the Lord what to do, the Lord said that the ships could not have windows, because the storms would break them.  This meant that sunlight was not an option.  The Lord also said that they could not have fires inside the ships, so having light from a fire was not an option.

2つ目の問題は、戸を閉めると光がなくなることでした。これは別のタイプの問題でした。当時人々に知られている唯一の光源は、太陽光か火のどちらかでした。ヤレドの兄弟が主に何をすべきか尋ねたとき、主は嵐が窓を壊してしまうので、船は窓を持つことができないと言われました。これは、日光が選択肢ではなかったことを意味していました。主はまた、彼らは船の中で火を起こすことはできないと言われたので、火を使って光を作ることも選択肢ではありませんでした。

Instead of providing an answer to the problem, the Lord asked the brother of Jared, “What will ye that I should do”.  The Lord knew exactly how to solve the problem.  He knew what the right answer was.  But he gave the brother of Jared an opportunity to struggle with the problem, to search for a solution, to seek an answer by pondering and praying.

主はその問題に答える代わりに、ヤレドの兄弟に「わたしに何をしてもらいたいのか」と尋ねられました。主は問題を解決する方法を正確にご存知で、正しい答えが何であるかをご存知でした。しかし、主はヤレドの兄弟に、問題に苦しみ、解決策を探し、熟考し、祈ることによって答えを探す機会を与えられました。

It is often the same in our own lives.  There are many times when we go to the Lord with a problem and ask for a solution.  Sometimes, the answer comes quickly.  Sometimes, the answer comes in unexpected ways.  And sometimes, the Lord asks us, “What will ye that I should do”.

それは私たち自身の生活でも同じことです。私たちが問題を抱えて主に尋ね、解決策を求めることがよくあります。 答えがすぐ与えられることもあります。答えが予想外の方法で来ることもあります。そして時には、主は私たちに「わたしに何をしてもらいたいのか」と尋ねられることもあります。

The Lord expects us to use our own initiative to solve problems.  This gives us an opportunity to grow and to learn.  If every problem were solved immediately by the Lord, we would not have any opportunities to struggle and to grow.  

主は私たちが問題を解決するために私たち自身の独創力を使うことを期待されます。これは私たちに成長し、学ぶ機会を与えてくれます。すべての問題が主によって即座に解決されるなら、私たちは努力して問題に取り組み、成長する機会がありません。

In the Doctrine & Covenants, the Lord tells Oliver Cowdery the same thing.  Oliver is told that he has to study the problem and try to find a solution.  Then, he can ask the Lord if the solution is correct.  

教義と聖約の中で、主はオリバー・カウドリに同じことを言われています。オリバーは、まず問題を研究し、解決策を見つける努力をするように言われています。それを行った後で、解決策が正しいかどうかを主に尋ねることができます。

As we go through this week, let’s remember that we need to use our own abilities to solve the challenges and problems that come into our lives.  Let’s remember that these challenges and problems represent opportunities to grow and to develop our capabilities.  Let’s remember that the Lord will always guide us and help us, as long as we do our part.

新しい週が始まります。自分の能力を使い、人生で発生する問題やチャレンジを解決する必要があることを忘れないでください。これらの問題とチャレンジは、私たちの能力を伸ばし、成長する機会を与えてくれることを覚えていてください。私たちが自分の役割を果たす限り、主は常に私たちを導き、助けてくださることを忘れないでください。
