わたしは地の果てに至るすべての人に、悔い改めてキリストの裁きの座に立つ備えをするように説き勧めることができればと願っている。モルモン書３：２２
And I would that I could persuade all ye ends of the earth to repent and prepare to stand before the judgement seat of Christ. Mormon 3:22
In the first six chapters of Mormon, we are confronted with a time of great wickedness and destruction. The Nephites have all become wicked. The Nephites and the Lamanites are at war with each other constantly. There is death and destruction everywhere. There was so much wickedness that Mormon was commanded not to preach to the people.
モルモン書の最初の6章では、甚だしい邪悪と破壊の時代に直面することになります。ニーファイ人は全員、邪悪になりました。ニーファイ人とレーマン人は絶えず互いに戦争をしており、至る所で死と破壊がおこっていました。その状況があまりにも邪悪であったためモルモンは人々に説教しないよう主から命じられました。
In the final act of destruction, in chapter 6, we read of the end of the Nephite civilization. In the great battle at Cumorah, at least 230,000 Nephites are killed. Mormon writes that only 24 of the Nephites survive that final battle.
私たちは、第6章で述べている破壊がニーファイ人の文明を終わらせようとしているのを読みとることが出来ます。クモラでの大きな戦いで、少なくとも 230,000 人のニーファイ人が殺されました。モルモンは、ニーファイ人のうち 24 人だけがその最後の戦いを生き延びたと述べています。
But through all of this wickedness, destruction, and terror, Mormon remains faithful to the Lord. He does all that he can to help the Nephites, leading their armies into battle and hoping that they will repent.
しかし、この邪悪さ、破壊、そして恐怖のすべてを通して、モルモンは主に忠実であり続けました。彼はニーファイ人を助けるためにできる限りのことをし、彼らの軍隊を戦いに導き、彼らが悔い改めることを望んでいました。
In the end of chapter 3, Mormon tells us why he spent so much time and effort writing on the plates. He says he writes unto the Gentiles, unto the House of Israel, and even to “the ends of the earth”. He wants everyone to know and to understand that everyone must stand before the judgement seat of Christ to be judged of their own works.
第3章の終わりで、モルモンはなぜ版の執筆にそれほど多くの時間と労力を費やしたのかを教えています。彼は、異邦人、イスラエルの家、さらには「地球の果て」にさえ手紙を書いているのだと述べています。彼は、誰もがキリストの裁きの座の前に立ち、自分の行いについて裁かれることを理解するよう望んでいました。
This warning is also to each one of us. We also must stand before the judgement seat of Christ. We also must be judged of our works. We also must receive a blessing or a punishment, depending upon whether our works were good or evil.
この警告は私たち一人一人にも当てはまります。私たちもまた、キリストの裁きの座に立たなければなりません。私たちも自分の行いを裁かれるのです。 また、私たちの行いが良かったか、悪かったかによって、祝福や罰を受ける必要があります。
Mormon pleads with those to whom he is writing to repent. He understands the great blessings that will come to those whose works were good and the great punishment that will come to those whose works were evil.
モルモンは、私たち読者が悔い改めるよう願い求めています。彼は、行いが良かった人々にもたらされる大きな祝福と、行いが悪かった人々にもたらされる大きな罰をよく理解しています。
He wants everyone to come unto Christ and be saved. He wants everyone to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He wants everyone to repent and bring forth good works.
彼はすべての人がキリストのもとに来て救われることを、そして誰もがイエス・キリストの福音を信じてほしいと願っています。 彼は皆が悔い改め、良い働きをするよう望んでいます。
We need to follow the example of Mormon.
私たちもモルモンの模範にならう必要があります。
Do we want everyone to come unto Christ? Do we want everyone to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ? Do we want everyone to repent and bring forth good works?
誰もがキリストのもとに来ることをあなたは望んでいますか？ すべての人にイエス・キリストの福音を信じ、悔い改めて良い働きをするよう望んでいますか？
If we want all those things, what action are we taking?
そう望んでいるなら、どのような行動をとればよいのでしょうか？
Are we sharing the message of the gospel with our friends and neighbors? Are we being the best example of a disciple of Jesus Christ that we can be? Are we showing love and concern for all those that we meet? Are we helping others who are suffering or who have lost hope? Are we serving in our callings?
私たちは福音のメッセージを友人や隣人とシェアしていますか？イエス・キリストの弟子として私たちはできるかぎりの模範を示していますか？私たちは出会うすべての人に愛と関心を示していますか？苦しんでいる人や希望を失った人を助けていますか？私たちは自分の召しに仕えていますか？
We can all do much more to be like Mormon.
私たちは、モルモンのようになるためにもっと多くのことができます。
As we go through this next week, let’s do all that we can to follow the example set by the prophet Mormon. Let’s do more to “persuade all ye ends of the earth to repent”. Let’s do our best to show love and concern to everyone. Let’s bring forth good works.
新しい週が始まります。預言者モルモンが示した模範に従えるよう最善を尽くしましょう。「地の果てに至るすべての人に、悔い改めを説き勧めるために」より努力しましょう。すべての人に愛と関心を示すよう最善を尽くしましょう。良い行いができますように。
