Let’s continue our discussion of how we got the Bible that we began at the last meeting.
Today, the Bible is widely available in many different languages. It is still one of the best-selling books. It is estimated that about 100 million copies of the Bible are sold each year.
As we discussed at the last meeting, the Old Testament was written primarily in Hebrew. The New Testament was written primarily in Greek.
During the Savior’s ministry on earth, only the Old Testament existed. There were several different versions of the Old Testament. Some religious groups included only a few books, while other groups included many books.
There are many books that were used anciently that are no longer in our Old Testament.We talked about the books of Zenos and Zenock last time.But there are many more.For example, the books of 1st Enoch, 2nd Enoch, and 3rd Enoch are no longer in our Old Testament, although they are included in over versions of the Old Testament.
It is interesting that the Apostles did not leave a fixed set of scriptures. The New Testament was not compiled until several hundred years after the deaths of the Apostles.Today, there are more than 10 different versions of the New Testament.
The Bible used by the Protestant churches is different than the Bible used by the Catholic churches.For example, the Catholic version of the Bible, there is a group of books called the Apocrypha. The Protestant churches do not recognize the Apocrypha as valid scripture.When the Prophet Joseph Smith was translating the Bible, the Lord told him in Section 91 of the Doctrine & Covenants that he did not need to translate the books in the Apocrypha.
Up until about 1500, the Bible was only available in Hebrew or Latin. Very few of the people could read in any language. The only people who were taught to read Hebrew and Latin were the priests of the Catholic Church. The members of the Church could not read the Bible.
One of the first men to translate part of the Latin Bible into English was John Wycliffe. He translated the New Testament into English in 1377. For doing this, Wycliffe was arrested by the Catholic Church and put into prison, where he later died.
William Tyndale was another man who attempted to translate the Bible into English in 1526. It was about this same time the Guttenberg invented the printing press.Tyndale’s New Testament was one of the first books every printed on a printing press. For doing this, Tyndale was arrested, charged with heresy, and burned at the stake.
The first English translation of the entire Bible was done by Miles Coverdale in 1535. Like Tyndale, Coverdale was also arrested and burned at the stake.
There were a number of other men who made translations of the Bible into English or other languages. Many of them were also arrested and killed.
As people like Martin Luther began reading the Bible, they realized that what the Bible taught was not what the Catholic Church was teaching. This led to the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. This was a key step in the process of the Restoration of the gospel.
Over time, many others translated the Bible into English, German, French, and other languages. Many different versions of the Bible were printed.
For example, there is the “Breeches” Bible. It is called that because the translators chose the word “breeches” instead of “aprons” when translating the story of Adam and Eve.“Breeches” is a very old English word for pants or trousers.
Another odd translation was the “Sinners” Bible. It got its name because of a printing error. When the type was set to print the Bible, the printers made a big mistake. They left out one small simple word. The word “not”. In this version of the Bible, one of the Ten Commandments says “thou shalt commit adultery”. It was a very popular version for a while.
Today, we have the scriptures available to us in many languages. We don’t have to be worried that we will be killed if we read the Bible. We should be very grateful to the many people who lost their lives trying to make the Bible available to everyone.
今日、教会歴史として、前回のミーティングで始めたどのようにして聖書を手に入れることができたかについて話を続けましょう。今日では聖書は数多くの異なった言語で読むことが可能です。今もまだベストセラーの一つに入っています。一年で約１億冊もの聖書が売れています。
前回お話したように旧約聖書は最初ヘブライ語で書かれていました。そして、新約聖書は最初ギリシャ語でかかれていました。
地上で救い主の御業が行われた時には旧約聖書しかありませんでした。でも、当時でさえ、いくつかの異なったバージョンがありました。あるグループが沢山の書を載せているのに、いくつかの宗教的な団体はほんの少しの書しか載せていませんでした。
昔使われていた沢山の書が、私達の旧約聖書にはもう使われていません。前回、ゼノス書とゼノク書についてお話しましたが、それらはもうありません。しかし、他にももっとあります。たとえば、第一エノク、第二エノク、第三エノクは私達の旧約聖書にはもうありませんが、古いバージョンの旧約聖書には含まれていました。
残念ながら、古代の使徒たちがきちんと揃えた聖典を残さなかったのです。新約聖書は使徒たちの死後何百年かたつまで完成しませんでした。今日では１０種類以上もの異なった仕様の新約聖書が存在します。
プロテスタント教会で使われている聖書はカトリック教会で使われているものとは違います。例えば、カトリック教会のものはアポクリファと呼ばれている書が入っています。プロテスタント教会はアポクリファを有効な聖典と認識していません。預言者ジョセフ・スミスが聖書を翻訳したとき、教義と聖約の９１章にあるように主はアポクリファを翻訳する必要はないと言われました。
紀元１５００年頃まで、聖書はヘブライ語かラテン語だけでした。ほとんどの人は無学文盲で、何でも読むことができませんでした。ラテン語を教えられ読むことのできたのはカトリック教会の祭司だけでした。普通な教会の会員は聖書を全然読むことができませんでした。
聖書を最初に英語に翻訳しようとした人の一人がジョン・ワイクリフです。彼は１３７７年に新約聖書の部分を英語に訳しました。このことを行った為に、ワイクリフはカトリック教会に捕えられ牢に入れられ、そこで亡くなりました。
ウィリアム・ティンデールは１５２６年に聖書を英語に翻訳しようとしたもう一人の人です。ちょうどグーテンベルクが印刷機を発明したのと同じ時代でした。ティンデールの新約聖書は初めて印刷機で印刷された書物のひとつです。このことを行ったが故にティンデールは逮捕され、異端で起訴され、火炙りにされました。
最初に聖書を完全に英訳したのは１５３５年、マイルズ・カバーデールです。ティンデールと同じように、かバーデールも逮捕され火炙りにされました。他にも何人もの人が聖書を英語や他の言語に翻訳しました。そのうちの多くの人が捕まり、殺されました。
マーティン・ルターのような人々が聖書を読み始め、聖書がカトリック教会が教えていることとは違うことに気づきました。これがプロテスタント教会の再建を導き、福音の回復の重要なステップとなりました。
時間とともに数多くの仕様の聖書が印刷されました。あるはちょっとおかしい物です。例えばブリーチス、ズボンの聖書というのがあります。ブリーチスはとても古い英語の言葉でパンツやズボンを表します。ブリーチスの聖書の翻訳者がアダムとイブの話を訳すときに、エプロンの代わりにズボンという言葉を選んだからです。
もう一つ変わった翻訳には罪人の聖書というのがあります。印刷ミスのためにその名がつけられてしまいました。聖書を印刷するための活字をセットしたときに印刷者は大きなミスを犯しました。小さな単純な言葉を省略しました。ノットという単語です。罪人の聖書では、十戒の一つの戒めに ダウ シャルト コミット アダルトリイ すなわち「汝姦淫をすべし」と印刷してしまったのです。しばらくの間はとても人気を博しました。
今日では聖書はあらゆる言語に翻訳されています。聖書を読んでも殺される心配をする必要はありません。私達はすべての人々に聖書を読むことを可能にしようしたために命を失った多くの人々に深く感謝しなければなりません。
