覚えておきなさい。わたしの同胞よ、覚えておきなさい。滅びる者は自分で滅び、罪悪を行う者は自分でそれを行うのである。なぜなら、あなたがたは自由であり、あなたがたは随意に行動することを許されているからである。見よ、神はあなたがたに知識を与えて、あなたがたを自由にしてくださったからである。ヒラマン書１４：３０

And now remember, remember, my brethren, that whosoever perisheth, perisheth unto himself; and whosoever doeth iniquity, doeth it unto himself; for behold, ye are free; ye are permitted to act for yourselves; for behold, God hath given unto you a knowledge and he hath made you free.  

Helaman 14:30

In chapters 13 to 15 of Helaman, we read about a message given to the Nephites by a Lamanite missionary named Samuel.  At this period of time, the Lamanites had strong testimonies of the gospel and were keeping the commandments of the Lord.  The Nephites, on the other hand, had fallen into inactivity and were becoming wicked.

ヒラマン書の13章から15章では、サムエルというレーマン人宣教師がニーファイ人に伝えたメッセージについて述べています。この時期、レーマン人は福音に強い証を持ち、主の戒めを守っていました。 一方、ニーファイ人は信仰を無くし邪悪になりました。

Samuel is sent to the Nephites to call them to repentance and to teach them about the coming of the Savior.  He tells the Nephites that when the Savior is born, there will be a day and a night and a day with no darkness.  This will be a sign to them, Samuel explains, that the Savior has been born.

サムエルはニーファイ人に悔い改めを呼びかけ、救い主の来臨について教えるよう導かれました。彼はニーファイ人に、救い主が誕生する時、昼夜、暗闇のない日があると告げています。これが救い主の誕生を知らせる彼らへのしるしであると説明しています。

Samuel also preaches repentance to the Nephites.  He tells them of their wickedness and warns them of the consequences of sin.  He reminds them that the principal of free agency allows them to choose between right and wrong.  

サムエルはニーファイ人にも悔い改めを教えています。彼らの邪悪さを指摘し、罪の結果について彼らに警告しています。 自由意思の原則があるため善悪を選択できることを彼らに思い起こさせています。

This is all part of the great Plan of Happiness.  In order for everything to be fair, we must have the freedom to choose our own actions.  Heavenly Father gives us his commandments in the scriptures and through his chosen prophets and apostles.  But the Lord will never force anyone to accept the gospel or to keep any of the commandments.

これはすべて偉大な幸福の計画の一部です。すべてが公平であるためには、私たちに行動を選択する自由がなければなりません。天父は聖典や選ばれた預言者と使徒を通して私たちに戒めを与えておられます。しかし、主は誰にも強制的に福音を受け入れ、戒めを守らせるような事はされません。

We are all free to choose what we want to do.  But, we are not free to choose the consequences of our decisions.  This is the part that many people ignore.  Satan is able to trick them into thinking that there won’t be any consequences, or that they can choose the consequences.  

私たちは誰でもやりたいことを自由に選べます。しかし、私たちはその選択の結果を自由に選ぶことはできません。多くの人がこの事に無関心です。サタンは、選択の結果などない、とかその結果を選ぶこともできるというように人をだまします。

But as Samuel teaches us, this is not true.  We are free to make our own choices, but we are not free to change the results of those choices.  There are commandments.  There are laws.  There are consequences.

しかし、サムエルが私たちに教えているように、これは真実ではありません。私たちは自由に選択をすることができますが、それらの選択の結果を自由に変更することはできません。戒めがあり、律法があり、結果があります。

This works the same for good decisions as well as for bad decisions.  If we choose to obey a commandment, we will receive the blessings that come from obeying that commandment.  If we choose to disobey a commandment, we will receive the punishment that comes from disobeying that commandment.

これは、良い選択と悪い選択のどちらでも同じように当てはまります。戒めに従うことを選択した場合、その戒めに従うことからもたらされる祝福を受けます。戒めに従わないことを選択した場合、その戒めに従わないことによる罰を受けます。

Whichever we choose, to obey or to disobey, we choose for ourselves.  No one can force us to obey any commandment.  No one can force us to disobey any commandment.  There must be free agency in order to make God’s judgement fair.  The Lord gives us knowledge and then waits for us to make our own choices.

どちらを選ぶにせよ、従うべきか、従わないかは自分自身のために選ぶのです。誰も私たちに戒めを強制することはできません。だれも私たちに戒めに背くように強制することもできません。 神の裁きを公平にするためには、自由意志がなければなりません。主は私たちに知識を与えて、私たちが自分の選択をするのを待たれます。

As we go through this week, let’s remember that all decisions have consequences.  Let’s remember that, while we are free to make choices, we are not free to choose the consequences of those decisions.  Let’s remember that we each have the freedom to choose right or to choose wrong.   Let’s remember to always choose the right.

新しい週が始まります。すべての選択が結果をもたらすことを覚えておきましょう。私たちは自由に選択できる一方で、それらの選択による結果を自由に選べないことを忘れないでください。私たちはそれぞれ、正しい選択も間違った選択も自由に選べることを覚えておきましょう。常に正しいものを選ぶことができますように。
