それとも、わたしたちが座に着いているまま、主から与えられた手段を利用しないでいて、主がそれでもなおわたしたちを救ってくださると思っているのですか。アルマ書６０：２１

Or do you suppose that the Lord will still deliver us, while we sit upon our thrones and do not make use of the means which the Lord has provided for us?  Alma 60:21

In chapter 60 of Alma, the great Nephite general, Captain Moroni sends a letter to Pahoran, who was the political leader of the Nephites.  In his letter, Moroni criticizes Pahoran.  

アルマ書60章で、偉大なニーファイ人の総督であるモロナイは、ニーファイ人の政治的指導者であったパホーランに手紙を送りました。その手紙の中でモロナイはパホーランを非難しています。

Moroni is struggling to lead the Nephite armies to victory.  It was a difficult time for the Nephites.  Moroni does not think that the government is providing the support that the army needs.  The government is supposed to provide the army with sufficient food, supplies, and men.  

モロナイはニーファイ人の軍隊を勝利に導くために苦労していました。ニーファイ人は苦しい時期を過ごしていました。モロナイは軍に必要な支援を政府が提供しているとは思えませんでした。政府から軍のために十分な食料、物資、人員などの支援が無かったからです。

Moroni feels that the people who are in the cities, protected from the hardships of the battles, are not doing their part to help the Nephites win.   Moroni accuses Pahoran of not making use of the things the Lord has provided.  

モロナイは、戦争から守られた町に住む人々が、ニーファイ人を助けるための役割を果たしていないと感じていました。モロナイは、主が与えられた手段を利用していないと言ってパホーランを非難しています。

As it turns out, Pahoran was doing his best to help the Nephite armies.  There was a problem that Moroni did not know about.  When Moroni learned about the problem, he took action to solve it.

しかし実際は、ニーファイ人の軍隊を助けるためにパホーランは最善を尽くしていました。そこにはモロナイが知らない問題があったのです。モロナイはそのことを知ったとき、その問題を解決するために行動を起こしました。

Are we sometimes like this?  Do we complain that things are difficult, that we are having trials, that we are not happy?  

私たちも同じような時がありませんか？ 私たちは状況が難しいとか、試練を受けている、幸せではないなどと不満を言っていませんか？

Do we “sit upon our thrones” without making use of the things the Lord has provided us with?  

主から与えられた手段を利用しないで「座に着いているまま」でしょうか？

The Lord knows that we will have many trials during our life here on earth.  To help us, the Lord has given us many things.  He has given us the scriptures.  He has given us apostles and prophets.  He has given us the “Come, Follow Me” study program.  He has given us wonderful technology to help us during this COVID-19 problem.  He has given us ministering sisters and brothers.

主は、私たちが現世で多くの試練を経験することをご存知です。私たちを助けるために、主は私たちに多くの手段を与えてくださいました。主は私たちに聖典を与えてくださいました。私たちに使徒と預言者を与えてくださいました。 「私に従ってきなさい」学習プログラムも与えてくださいました。コロナ禍の問題を解決するために、素晴らしい技術を提供してくださいました。主は、私たちにミニスタリング兄弟姉妹を用意してくださいました。

Are we using “the means which the Lord has provided for us”?  Or are we just sitting on our thrones in “thoughtless stupor”, expecting the Lord to somehow solve all of our problems for us without any effort on our part?

あなたは「主が私たちに与えられた手段」を利用していますか？ それとも、「考えもなくぼんやりとした状態」で座に着いており、自分で何の努力もしなくても主がすべての問題を解決してくれると期待していませんか？

We are expected to take action.  We are expected to make choices.  We are expected to do all that we can do on our own.  We cannot do everything, but we can do something.  We cannot solve all the problems, but we can “use the means” the Lord has provided.

私たちは行動を起こすよう求められています。選択すること、また自分たちでできることはすべて行うよう求められています。私たちはすべてのことを行うことはできませんが、何かを行うことはできます。私たちはすべての問題を解決することはできませんが、主が与えられた「手段を利用する」ことはできます。

We all have burdens to carry.  Some are very heavy.  Some last a long time, many years even.  Some seem impossible to solve.

私たちは誰でも負うべき重荷があります。とても重いものであったり、何年も続くものもあります。中には解決不可能のように思えるものもあるかもしれません。

But the Lord has promised us that, if we keep the commandments, if we pray, if we do our best, he will send us the blessings that we need.  He knows us and loves us very much.  He wants us to be happy.  He knows that it is often through trials and hardships that we are able to learn important lessons.  He will always do his part.

しかし、主は、戒めを守り、祈り、最善を尽くすなら、私たちに必要な祝福を送ってくださると約束されました。主は私たちをご存知であり、私たちをとても愛しておられます。私たちが幸せになることを望んでおられます。私たちが試練と困難を乗り越えていることで大切なレッスンを学ぶことができることを主はご存知です。常に主はご自身の役割を果たされるのです。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember to use “the means which the Lord has provided for us”.  Let’s remember that we are expected to take action and to do our best.  Let’s remember to pray daily, to read and to study the Book of Mormon, and to serve others.  

新しい週が始まります。「主が私たちに与えられた手段」を利用することを覚えていましょう。私たちが行動を起こし、最善を尽くすことが期待されていることを覚えていましょう。毎日祈り、モルモン書を読み、研究し、他人に仕えることを忘れないでください。
