And now what evidence have ye that there is no God, or that Christ cometh not: I say unto you that ye have none, save it be your word only. But, behold, I have all things as a testimony that these things are true. Alma 30:40-41

In the 30th chapter of Alma, there is an account of a man named Korihor. Korihor tried to convince the people that the gospel was wrong and that they did not need to keep the commandments.

アルマ書30章にコリホルという男の話があります。彼は福音が間違で、戒めを守る必要などないと人々を説き伏せようとしました。

He used many arguments against the gospel, saying things like, “ye cannot know of things you cannot see”, and, “no man can know of that which is to come”. Basically, he said that there is no revelation and no guidance from the Holy Ghost.

彼は「見ることができないものを知ることなどできない」、「これから起こることを人は知ることができない」などと福音に反する多くの議論を戦わせました。 つまり彼は聖霊からの啓示や導きはないと説きました。

He also taught that “every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature”, and “whatsoever a man did was no crime”.

What is interesting about the things that Korihor taught is that they are the same arguments that those people who preach against the Church and the gospel have always used. There was nothing new about what Korihor had to say.

Those same arguments are used today by those who want to attack the Church. They use the same tired old arguments that Korihor used, saying that there cannot be any revelation. They preach the same things that Korihor taught, saying that each person can decide what is right and what is wrong, that there are no commandments.

これと同じ主張は、教会を攻撃したい人々によって今日も使われています。彼らはコリホルが使ったのと同じこと、つまり聞き飽きた古い議論を使用し、啓示などあり得ないと抗議しています。彼らはコリホルが教えたと同じことを説き、何が良く、何が悪いかは個人で判断すればよく、戒めもないと説いています。

One of Korihor’s arguments was that the leaders of the Church tried to take advantage of the member of the Church. He said that the Church forced its members to act in certain ways and that the Church prevented its members from having freedom of choice.

コリホルの主張のひとつは、教会の指導者たちは教会員を利用しようとしたというものでした。 彼は教会が会員に特定の方法で行動することを強制し、教会は会員が選択の自由を持つことを妨げたと述べました。

When Korihor was brought before Alma, the chief judge of the land, he tried these same arguments on Alma. But Alma, who was the head of the Church, was able to quickly point out the fallacies and errors of Korihor’s words.

コリホルがその土地の最高判事であるアルマの前に連れて来られたとき、彼はアルマに対してこれらと同じ議論を試みました。 しかし、教会の長であったアルマはコリホルの言葉の誤りをすぐに指摘することができました。

Alma had a great testimony of the gospel and understood that revelation from God does happen and that the Holy Ghost will lead and direct us, if we are humble and obedient. He asked Korihor why the leaders and members of the Church spent so much time helping others understand the gospel without any expectation of a financial reward.

Finally, Alma asks Korihor the most important question. He asks Korihor what evidence he has that there is no God or that Christ was not going to come. Korihor has no evidence. He only has his opinion. Alma shares with Korihor that the members of the Church have all things as evidence that God lives and the Jesus Christ is the Savior.

We have the scriptures, the General Conference talks, the testimony of many, many people that these things are true. We have the beauties of nature, the regular movement of the planets, the sun, the moon, and the stars as evidence that there is a God.

Most importantly, we have our own individual testimony that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. We receive that testimony by following Moroni’s instructions to study, ponder, and pray. We have done this and have received the promised testimony from the Holy Ghost that these things are true.

As we go through this next week, let’s remember that there are still many “Korihors” today. Let’s remember that Satan uses the same tricks and arguments today as he did in the days of Alma. Let’s remember that, while there is no evidence at all that there is no God, there is plenty of evidence that there is a God. Let’s remember that the most important thing we can do is to receive and then to strengthen our own personal testimony of Jesus Christ and the gospel.
