したがって、あなたがたは、わたしたちの先祖が与えられた法に従って裁かれるように、この民の声によってさばきつかさを選びなさい。先祖によって与えられた法は正しものであって、主の御手によって先祖に授けられたものである。さて、民の声が正しいことに反する事柄を望むのはまれであるが民の少数が正しくないことを求めることである。したがって、あなたがたは民の声によって職務を果たすように留意し、それをあなたがたの法とすべきである。モーサヤ書２９:２５−２６

Therefore, choose you by the voice of this people, judges, that ye may be judged according to the laws which have been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord.  Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law —  to do your business by the voice of the people.  Mosiah 29:25-26

This is a very interesting scripture.  It was given more than 2,000 years ago, but is still relevant to our lives today.

これはとても興味深い聖句です。今から二千年以上前の話ですが、今日の私たちの生活にも通用します。　

King Mosiah was approaching the end of his life and knew he would not live much longer.  Mosiah’s father, king Benjamin, had appointed Mosiah as the next king.  Normally, Mosiah would also have appointed one of his sons to be the next king.

モーサヤ王は生涯を終えようとしており、残された時間があまり残っていないことを知っていました。モーサヤの父、ベニヤミン王は次期の王としてモーサヤを任命しました。そして、モーサヤ王も次期の王に息子の一人を任命しようとしました。

But the sons of Mosiah all refused to be king.  Instead, they had chosen to serve as missionaries.  

しかしモーサヤの息子たちは全員、王になることを断り、代わりに宣教師として働くことを選びました。

The sons of Mosiah, after repenting sincerely, changed from being the “very vilest of sinners” into some of the greatest missionaries in the history of the Church.  They wanted even the Lamanites to enjoy the blessings of the gospel.  They spent 14 years as missionaries, teaching the Lamanites about the gospel and bringing many thousands of them into the Church.

モーサヤの息子たちは心から悔い改めた後、「罪人の中でも最も罪深いもの」から教会歴史の中で最も偉大な宣教師と変わったのです。彼らはレーマン人にも福音の祝福を味わって欲しいと望みました。彼らは14年間宣教師としてレーマン人に福音を教え、幾千人を教会に導きました。

So king Mosiah had no one to appoint as the next king.  He suggested to the people that, instead of having a king, each person should take the responsibility for himself.  He taught the people that it was better for them to make choices on their own.  He reminded them of the terrible wickedness that a wicked king caused.  

それでモーサヤ王は誰も次の王に任命できませんでした。王は王をたてる代わりに各個人が責任を持つことを民に提案をしました。彼は民が自分で決定する事の方が良いと民に教えました。彼は邪悪な王が招いた悲惨な結果を民に思い起こさせました。

This same principle has been taught throughout the scriptures.  Nephi refused to be a king over his people when they fled from the Lamanites and started their own city.  In the Jaredite record, the brother of Jared warned the people about the evils of having a king.  Now, king Mosiah taught this same thing to his people.

これと同じ原則は聖典の至る所で教えられています。ニーファイは民がレーマン人から逃れ、自分の街を築こうとしたとき王となることを拒みました。ヤレドの記録で、王を持つことが悪いことについてヤレドの兄弟が人々に警告していますが、モーサヤ王は人々にそれと同じ事を教えています。

In our day, we live in a democracy.  We do not have a king.  We have the opportunity to vote and to participate in political discussions and elections.  

私たちは今、民主主義の時代に暮らしています。王はいませんし、私たちは投票し、政治的な議論や選挙に参加する機会があります。

With that freedom comes serious responsibilities.  Just as Mosiah taught his people, we have a duty to seek out honest individuals who will support laws that are just and fair.  We need to learn about the issues, about the individuals who are seeking to be elected, about the laws that are proposed.  

その自由というものには大きな責任が伴います。モーサヤが人々に教えたように、私たちには正しく公正な法律を支持する正直な人を探し出す義務があります。私たちは、問題や、提案されている法律、候補者について学ぶ必要があります。

Most importantly, we have the responsibility to vote in elections.  This year is an election year in the United States.  We need to follow the counsel of Mosiah, as well as Church leaders in our own day, and actively participate in the choosing of wise and honorable leaders.  We need to be responsible citizens of whichever country we live in.  We need to do our part to preserve the freedoms that we all enjoy.

最も重要なのは、選挙で投票する責任があるということです。今年はアメリカの選挙の年です。私たちは、モーサヤや現在の教会指導者たちの勧告に従い、賢明で立派な指導者たちの選考に積極的に参加する必要があります。私たちは、自分が住んでいる国の責任ある市民である必要があります。私たちは皆が心地よく住める自由を守るために自分の役割を果たさなければなりません。

Let’s remember this counsel from priesthood leaders, past and present.  Let’s take the time necessary to learn about the issues, individuals, and laws.  Let’s actively participate in the political process.  Let’s remember that it is a privilege to vote.   Let’s do our part to preserve freedom.

過去と現在の神権指導者たちの勧告を忘れないようにしましょう。問題、候補者、法律について学ぶのに必要な時間を取りましょう。政治活動に積極的に参加しましょう。投票することは特権であることを忘れないでください。 自由を守るために私たちの役割を果たしましょう。
