さて、モーサヤの息子たちは、救いがすべての造られたものに告げ知らされることを願った。彼らは、誰であろうと人が滅びるのに耐えられなかったからである。まことに、無窮の苦痛を受ける人がいると考えただけで、彼らは震えおののいた。このように、主の御霊が彼らに働きかけた。彼らはかつて罪人の中でも最も罪深いものであった。しかし主は、その限りない憐みにより、彼らを救うのが御心にかなうとされた。それでも彼らは、自分たちの罪悪のために心にひどい苦しみを受け、とこしえに捨てられてしまうのではないかと非常に悩み、心配した。モーサヤ書２８:３−４
Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble. And thus did the Spirit of the Lord work upon them, for they were the very vilest of sinners. And the Lord saw fit in his infinite mercy to spare them; nevertheless they suffered much anguish of soul because of their iniquities, suffering much and fearing that they should be case off forever. Mosiah 28:3-4
This scripture contains a great message of hope for all of us.
この聖句は、私たちに希望と言う素晴らしいメッセージを教えています。
This scripture is about Alma and several of the sons of Mosiah. Alma was the son of the leader of the Church and the others were sons of the king. In spite of their parent’s efforts to teach them the gospel and to train them to make wise decisions, they all chose to leave the covenant path.
この聖句は、アルマとモーサヤの息子たちの話です。アルマは教会指導者の息子で、その他は王の息子たちでした。彼らの両親は福音を教え、正しい決断ができるよう努めましたが、その甲斐もなく彼らは聖約の道から逸れてしまいました。
Their parents prayed much for those boys. Their parents prayed that the hearts of the boys would be changed. Their parents prayed that they would come back to the covenant path.
彼らの両親は子供たちのために良く祈りました。彼らの心が変わり、聖約の道に戻るよう祈りました。
They had all made many bad decisions. They led many people away from the gospel. They caused many people to commit sins.
彼らは全員間違った選択をしてしまいました。多くの人を福音から離れさせて罪を犯させました。
They were described as being “the very vilest of sinners”.
彼らは「罪人の中でも最も罪深いもの」だったと述べられています。
And yet, the Lord knew of their great potential for good.
しかし、主は彼らが持っている良い可能性をご存知でした。
Through the many prayers offered over many years on their behalf, and by the great love and patience of the Lord, miracles did happen.
彼らのために何年も祈りが捧げられました。そして主の大きな愛と忍耐によって奇跡が起こりました。
All of those boys came back to the covenant path. They all became great missionaries. They all became some of the greatest leaders of the Church in the Book of Mormon history.
そして彼らは全員、聖約の道に戻ってきました。そして偉大な宣教師となり、モルモン書の歴史に残る偉大な指導者となりました。
So what is the message of hope in this scripture?
では、この聖句から希望について何を学べるでしょう？
The message of hope is simply this. The Lord loves all of us. He knows what our potential is. We have all made many mistakes, but none of us are “the very vilest of sinners”. If the Lord allowed those boys to repent and to come back, there is hope for all of us.
希望のメッセージは簡単です。主は私たちすべてを愛しておられ、私たちの可能性をご存知だということです。私たちは誰でも多くの間違いを犯していますが、だれも「罪人の中でも最も罪深いもの」ではありません。もし主がこの青年たちが悔い改め、戻ってくることを赦されたのなら私たちにも希望があります。
None of us will be cast off for our previous mistakes and sins, if we sincerely repent. No one has gone so far away that they cannot come back. No one is beyond the Lord’s arms of mercy.
誰も過去に犯した間違いや罪のために見捨てられることはありません。誰も戻れないほど遠くに行ってはいません。誰も、主の慈悲の御手の届かないところにはいません。
The Lord waits with open arms to receive all those who will repent and ask for forgiveness. He wants all of Heavenly Father’s children to enjoy the blessings of eternal life. He waits patiently for us to repent and to come back.
主は悔い改めて赦しを求めるものを受け入れようと御手を開いて待っておられます。主はすべての天父の子供たちが永遠の命の祝福を受け、歓ぶことを望んでおられます。主は私たちが悔い改めて戻ってくることを忍耐強く待っておられます。
Do not give up hope. Do not give up on anyone. If “the very vilest of sinners” can repent and return to the covenant path, there is hope for all of us.
希望を捨てないでください。あの人は見込みがないと諦めないでください。「罪人の中でも最も罪深いもの」であっても悔い改めて聖約の道に戻れるのなら、私たちにも希望があります。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember the experiences of Alma and the sons of Mosiah. Let’s remember how they repented and came back into the gospel. Let’s remember that none of us is cast off. Let’s remember that there is hope for everyone, on conditions of repentance.
新しい週が始まります。アルマとモーサヤの息子たちの経験を覚えて過ごしましょう。彼らがどのように悔い改めて福音の道に戻ったのか覚えていましょう。私たちの誰も見捨てられることはないことを忘れないように。悔い改めと言う条件の下で、すべてのものに希望が存在する事を忘れないようにしましょう。
