Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose it savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men. 3 Nephi 12:13
This scripture is from the Savior’s teachings to the Nephites during his ministry among them and is the same as is found in Matthew. In this scripture, the Savior tells us that we are to be the “salt of the earth”.
この聖句は、主がニーファイ人の中で教導されていたものであり、マタイ伝で観られるものと同じ教えです。この聖句では主は私たちが「地の塩」であると教えておられます。
Why does the Savior use salt in this example? What does that mean?
主は何故、塩をたとえに使われたのでしょうか？またそれはどういう意味でしょうか？
Today, we don’t think much about salt. It is so common and so ordinary that there does not seem to be anything unusual or unique about it. We can walk in to any grocery store and buy all the salt that we need.
今日、私たちは塩についてあまり考えることはありません。塩は非常に一般的であり普通に手に入るものなので特別なものとは考えられていません。私たちは食料品店に入って欲しい塩をいつでも買うことができます。
But it was not always that way.
しかし常にそういう訳ではありませんでした。
Until just a few hundred years ago, salt was very hard to obtain. During the Middle Ages, one of the most important things the trade routes brought to Western Europe was salt.
ほんの数百年前まで、塩を得るのは非常に困難なことでした。中世の頃、貿易ルートが西ヨーロッパにもたらした最も重要なものの一つは塩でした。
In those times, salt was a wonderful thing. It could turn tasteless food into something that was tasty. It could help cure some common medical problems. It was a very valuable item.
その時代では塩はとても重宝されていました。それは味のない食べ物をおいしいものにしたり、よくある病気の治療に役立つこともありました。それはとても貴重なものでした。
Because it was scarce, and because so many people wanted it, it was very expensive. Only the rich people could afford to buy salt.
それは希少であり、非常に多くの人が欲しがることからとても高価なものでした。裕福な人だけが塩を買うことができました。
The people that the Savior taught this scripture understood how rare and how valuable salt was. It was almost as valuable as gold or silver.
救い主からこの聖句を教わった人々は塩がどれほど貴重で価値があるかを理解していました。それは金や銀と同じくらい価値のあるものでした。
Just as salt changes tasteless food into something that is good, we are to be the salt that brings the light of the gospel into the lives of those who are in spiritual darkness. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to help make things better.
塩が食べ物を美味しく見違えらせるように、私たちは福音の光を霊の暗闇の中にいる人々の生活に取り込む塩とならなければなりません。イエス・キリストの弟子として私たちはより良いものを築く手助けをしなければなりません。
But salt is only useful in small quantities. Putting too much salt into food makes it inedible. A little salt can be a good thing. Too much salt can be a bad thing.
しかし、塩は少量で充分役に立ちます。食べ物に塩を入れすぎると食べれなくなります。少量の塩は良いものですが、多すぎると良くないものになります。
Do we spend our time only with other “salt”? Or do we spend our time sharing our “salt” in small amounts with those who may not have any “salt”? Through our small and simple acts of service, we can share our salt with those around us. We can be examples of true followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
私たちは他の「塩」とだけ交わりますか？それとも「塩」持っていない人に少量の自分の「塩」を分かち合い時間を過ごしますか？私たちの小さく簡単な奉仕の行いを通して、私たちの塩を周りの人に分かち合うことが出来ます。こうして私たちは救い主イエス・キリストの真の従者の模範となることが出来ます。
In this scripture, we are warned about salt that has lost its savor. We are told that it is of no value then. How does salt lose its savor? By having impurities mixed in with it.
この聖句は私たちにその味を失った塩について警告しています。味を失った塩はもう価値が無いと教えています。塩はどのようにその味を失うのでしょう？不純物が混じり込むことでそうなります。
If we are to be true followers of Jesus Christ, if we are to be the salt of the earth, we must repent of our sins. We must keep the commandments. We must seek opportunities to serve others. We must share the light of the gospel with others.
私たちがイエス・キリストの従者となるためには、そしてこの世の塩となるためには、私たちは罪を悔い改めなければなりません。私たちは戒めを守り、他の誰かに仕える機会を探し求めねばなりません。福音の光を他の誰かに分かち合わねばなりません。
As we begin a new year, let’s resolve to the salt of the earth. Let’s make the decision to keep the commandments. Let’s share the salt that we have with others so that their lives may be blest as well. Let’s be pure salt.
新しい年を始めるにあたり、この世の塩となる決意をしましょう。戒めを守ると決意しましょう。私たちが持っている塩を他の人に分かち合いましょう。そうすれば他の人の人生も同様に素晴らしくなります。混じりけの無い純粋な塩になりましょう。
